In recent time however, climate change has threatened and undermined this potential. This study was therefore carried out to assess rural farmers’ coping strategies to effects of climate change on watermelon production in Igboora, Oyo State, Nigeria. Multi stage sampling technique was used to select 150 watermelon farmers as sample size for this study. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were used to analyse the data. The findings showed that there was significant relationship between respondent’s personal characteristics and coping strategies adopted by the watermelon farmers at p < 0.05 level. Also, there was significant relationship between sources of information and coping strategies adopted by the watermelon farmers at p < 0.05 level. It is hereby recommends that effort should be put in place by the government and Seed Council of Nigeria (SCN) to come up with improved, and high drought and disease resistant watermelon seeds to increase productivity and reduce cost of seeds importation in the study area.","PeriodicalId":147153,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Agricultural Research","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126831907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also necessary vegetable crop mainly for small-scale farmers in Amhara National Regional State of Ethiopia. The productivity of this crop is low under national level, it is said to be 7.36qt per hectare. It is even lower to that of the national in Amhara National Regional State growing areas. Assessing pepper growing areas and collect damaged plants by the disease and identification of diseases was the focus of this study. Three districts were selected purposively based on accessibility, production and problem, available time, logistics, and representativeness. In each district three representative peasant administrations (PAs)/kebeles were selected. Sampled kebeles and respondents were selected using simple random sampling techniques. A total of 135 respondents were selected for interview. The data was collected through semi structured interview schedule. In each PA, three simple random sample selected farmers’ fields were assessed. The assessment was done at one growth stage of the plant (flowering-podding stage). The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of this study confirm that in all the surveyed peasant farms, only one type of variety, which is Marekofana was encountered with low to high levels infestation of different leaf, stem, and root diseases. Root rot/wilt complex diseases were found distributed in almost all the surveyed areas. The prevalence of the disease, pepper wilt/root rot complex is high, therefore; efforts better to be made towards the integration of multiple control options.","PeriodicalId":147153,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Agricultural Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133844737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Climatic variables, Rice Yield, Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Land Sat 8 (OLI) and Soil Texture map were the data used. Climatic data of the state were analyzed over time and Space using trend and spatial analysis tools in excel and Arc GIS respectively, while correlation and stepwise regression analysis between rice yield and the climatic variables were analyzed in SPSS. Mean temperature, August and September rainfalls were identified to be the critical Climatic factors affecting the growth and yield of rice in the State. The highly suitable cover places such as; Lisasam, Takum, Donga, Wukari, Mutum Biyu and Bali while the suitable area occupy places like Serti, Lau, Sunkani, Jalingo and Lankaviri. Suitability map produced with NDVI showed that the highly suitable area for Rice cultivation reduced from 31.93% to 28.76%. In regards to this findings, cultivation of rice should be encourage in Highly Suitable and Suitable zones of the State while cultivation of alternative crops other than rice in not suitable area is very important in reducing the risk of crop failure. In addition, application of Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) a Remote Sensing and GIS tool and NDVI plays a significant role in Agro-climatic suitability zoning, as such, the tools are recommended in Agro-climatic research. Contribution/Originality: This study contributes to the Agricultural planning by determining the suitable area for cultivation of rice in Taraba State. Similarly, this paper contributes the first logical analysis that incorporates Agro-climatic statistical method and MCDM (AHP) method in designing a model for Agro-climatic suitability analysis.","PeriodicalId":147153,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Agricultural Research","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131333992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
