The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of curcumin and enrofloxacin against A. hydrophila were found to be 100ug/ml and 9.375ug/ml, respectively. To realize the mechanisms of action of curcumin against A. hydrophila, we researched the antibacterial activity and bacterial membrane permeability of A. hydrophila cells treated with curcumin or enrofloxacin. All results elucidated that curcumin increased membrane permeabilization and caused leakage of intracellular contents, while its role was not as good as enrofloxacin. Moreover, a synergistic effect was shown between curcumin and enrofloxacin. The present study suggests that curcumin extracted from turmeric has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial for the control of A. hydrophila.","PeriodicalId":14704,"journal":{"name":"Israeli Journal of Aquaculture-bamidgeh","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79709334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted the first hatchery production trials of the Asian green mussel Perna viridis spats in the Philippines to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a sufficient and reliable seed supply for grow-out operations. However, results of small-scale experiments cannot be directly rolled-out commercially unless these are verified in bigger-scale facilities approximating those of commercial hatcheries. Thus, techniques on broodstock collection, spawning, and larval rearing, developed by the project in the laboratory during the experimental trials, were applied and verified in a production run using industry-scale tank facilities. Mature broodstocks collected from traditional mussel growing areas were successfully spawned in the hatchery. Eggs were fertilized, and these developed into D-hinged larvae, pediveliger, and metamorphosed into early spat before fully developing into the spat stage. Successful larval rearing up to the spat stage required the use of appropriate algal species and rates of feeding, close monitoring of larval stages, and water quality management. The survival from eggs to D-hinged larvae, D-hinged larvae to pediveliger, pediveliger to early spat, D-hinged larvae to early spat, and early spat (1 mm) to fully grown spat was 77, 64, 6.4, 3.1, and 72%, respectively. This study has established the feasibility of producing P. viridis in commercial-scale hatchery facilities.","PeriodicalId":14704,"journal":{"name":"Israeli Journal of Aquaculture-bamidgeh","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90725986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, revealing the vertical distribution of DO in aquaculture ponds influenced by thermal stratification and mixing can provide a theoretical basis for aquaculture water management. Here, we explore the impacts of thermal stratification and mixing on the vertical distribution of DO in two aquaculture ponds under different weather conditions. The results showed that thermal stratification mainly occurs during the daytime, and mixing occurs at nighttime. Water thermal stratification appears 4 h after sunrise, while mixing occurs 1 h after nightfall. When the Richardson index is less than 0.25, the mixing direction is unstable. In the daytime, the vertical distribution of DO, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and phytoplankton abundance varied with thermal stratification and mixing. The concentration of DO gradually dropped with increasing water depth during the nighttime. The concentration of DO was lowest in the early morning and peaked in the afternoon. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that water temperature (WT), Chl-a, and phytoplankton abundance provided the best model for the vertical distribution of DO. Based on our results, DO regulation can provide important insights for aquaculture pond management.","PeriodicalId":14704,"journal":{"name":"Israeli Journal of Aquaculture-bamidgeh","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81754206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some approaches were made to increase the quantity and quality of cultivated spiny lobsters. Land-based mariculture with Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) was applied to increase lobster harvesting and optimize environmental quality by adjusting water alkalinity. This study aimed to determine the optimum level of alkalinity for spiny lobsters Panulirus homarus rearing in RAS. This study investigated the effects of applying four water alkalinity levels (Control, 125, 200, and 275 mg L-1 CaCO3) on the biochemical responses of P. homarus observed in the hemolymph in terms of Total Hemocyte Count (THC), glucose, total protein, calcium, and pH levels. Furthermore, we also studied the alkalinity effects on lobster production performance parameters in terms of body weight gain, body length, Survival Rate (SR), Specific Growth Rate (SGR), and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). Lobsters with an initial weight rate of 58.05±1.69 g and an initial total length rate of 115.33±1.52 mm were reared for 60 days in a recirculation system. Results of water quality parameters such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity during the study were available for lobster rearing. Different alkalinity levels affected the biochemical responses and production performance of lobsters. The best alkalinity level to reared Panulirus sp. in the recirculation system during this study was 200 mg L-1 CaCO3 so that it could achieve the highest survival rate of 86.67% with SGR 0.60±0.01 % day-1.","PeriodicalId":14704,"journal":{"name":"Israeli Journal of Aquaculture-bamidgeh","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80967052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 750 catfish fry were divided into five treatments with three replicates and fed experimental diets containing varying levels of alpha-TA: 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg·kg-1 diet for 45 days. Results show that catfish fry-fed diets supplemented with alpha-TA exhibited significantly higher weight gain (WG) and final average body weight (FABW), better specific growth rates (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR), and significantly higher survival rates compared to those of the control group fed the basal diet (P < 0.05). Better salinity resistance was observed in the Asian catfish fed the alpha-TA-supplemented diets when abruptly exposed to higher salinity (10 ppt) for up to 48 h. In addition, the diet attractability test revealed that alpha-TA-supplemented diets attracted significantly more catfish fry than the basal diet lacking vitamin E (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the results demonstrated that dietary supplementation of alpha-TA (vitamin E) improved growth, feed efficiency, feed attractability, survival, and resistance to abrupt higher salinity exposure of Clarias macrocephalus fry.","PeriodicalId":14704,"journal":{"name":"Israeli Journal of Aquaculture-bamidgeh","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77409563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to develop the superior tilapia strain suitable for the biofloc system and to observe their productivity and economic profitability under commercial scale in the biofloc system. The selective breeding activity was carried out on 100 families reared and mated in hapa (a double-walled contrivance in which an inner hapa, made of mosquito netting material, is installed within an outer one made of whole cloth) in the biofloc pond for three generations. The individual selection was conducted at the age of 6 months on the characters of standard length and body weight with the best 10% of the top part of the population as a reference for the formation of the next generation. After three generations, the offspring obtained from mass spawning were grown out in round-limen ponds and square-concrete ponds for productivity and profitability observations. The results showed that heritability values of the biofloc tilapia strain were 0.4196 (standard length, SL) and 0.4898 (body weight, BW). The average response selection of BW and SL was 13.04% and 6.11%, respectively. Biomass gain was obtained between 19.29–28.83 kg/m3. The production multiply value was 8.07-13.59x. The average daily weight growth was between 2.8g-3.0g. The Benefit-Cost ratio is valued from 1.81 to 2.71. The superior tilapia biofloc strain has a moderate heritability value.
