The model is based on the stiffness control strategy which is supposed to play an important role in the control of both human posture and human movement. To compensate for the effect of external disturbances, a feedforward mechanism is used in the model. Two cases are considered: unperturbed, inertial-visco-stiffness loaded movements, and perturbed movements by additive measurable disturbance. The optimal trajectory for both cases is computed by using the subject effort as a criterion function, as was proposed by Z. Hasan (1986).<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121339048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A line differential scheme was chosen as the secondary protection. Modern line differential relays which require the transfer of digitized quantities between both line terminals for decision making purposes are interfacing with telecommunications equipment which is not specifically designed for protection applications. Certain relays require precise time alignment for measured quantities from both ends to arrive at a correct decision. These relays are designed assuming bidirectional propagation times are essentially equal. Any significant asymmetry between the two times can result in misalignment of the data and cause incorrect operation of the protection scheme. The line differential relay and the impedance relay signals are multiplexed by a digital channel bank and transmitted via fiber optics. Bi-directional time symmetry is not a critical requirement for normal data transfer and there are no standards requiring time symmetry on communications equipment. The lack of definite communications standard incorporating allowable time asymmetry or relays designed without the capability to adapt to time asymmetry, will result in incorrect relay operations. A solution chosen by SaskPower to eliminate this bi-directional propagation time asymmetry is outlined.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132100818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique is probabilistic in nature. Probabilistic methods recognize the stochastic nature of system components and incorporate them in the spinning reserve assessment process in a consistent manner. A brief overview of the generalized technique is provided and a number of its attractive as well as less favorable features are discussed. In particular, the high order of computational complexity associated with the technique is addressed. A neural network paradigm known as frequency sensitive competitive learning (FSCL) is employed to assist the encoder in locating fractal self-similarity within a source image. A judicious development of the proper neural network size for optimal time performance is provided. Such an optimally chosen network has the effect of reducing the time complexity of the original encoding algorithm from O(n/sup 4/) to O(n/sup 3/). An implementation of fractal block coding employing FSCL and coding results is presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133399237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chen","doi":"10.1109/WESCAN.1993.270515","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/WESCAN.1993.270515","url":null,"abstract":"The authors present the results of a simulation study of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The FMS considered includes ten machining centers capable of performing a variety of tasks, an automated guided vehicle (AGV) based material handling system, and an automated single-input-single-output storage-retrieval system connected to the manufacturing system by conveyors. The system manufactures a large part mix and the parts are transported within the system by the AGV on pallets. Alternate part routing, which is an integral feature of most present day FMS, has been included in the model of this system. The model for the present study accounts for uncertainties such as stochastic part arrival patterns, variable machining times, and machine breakdowns. The performance of the system has been investigated under difficult AGV availability conditions, operation time levels, scheduling rules, and layouts of the system using factorial design techniques. The time spent by parts in the system is considered one of the main criteria of system performance. Statistical methods are used to analyze the effects of these parameters on the system performance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129823937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kohonen's self-organizing feature map (SOFM) has been used to compress several still monochrome images by a compression ratio of 16:1 at a compression rate of 0.5, while maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of about 30 dB. C programs were written to implement learning, compressing, decompressing, analyzing error, and others for the VQ method. These programs were run on the SUN SPARC Station 2. Methods for optimizing learning are presented. Given an image that is subjectively similar to the training image, and if the histogram of the test image is a subset of the histogram of the training image, then quantization of the test image will produce results comparable with the PSNR achieved by the training image.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130329911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They present details of the algorithms including (i) fast conversion of line spectrum pair parameters to linear predictive coding parameters, and (ii) fast searches of the parameters of adaptive and stochastic codebooks. The description can be readily used for CELP implementations, such as on (i) high-quality low-bit-rate speech transmission in point-to-point or store-and-forward mode, and (ii) efficient speech storage in speech recording and multimedia databases. The algorithms have been implemented on an IBM-PC AT equipped with a TMS320C30 module and a SUN Sparcstation 10 for the development of packet radio speech transmission and voice mail applications, respectively.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":146674,"journal":{"name":"IEEE WESCANEX 93 Communications, Computers and Power in the Modern Environment - Conference Proceedings","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132097669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
