It is found that the choice of the controller gain is limited to the local maximum amplitude determined by Q-factor around the characteristic frequency of the filter and grid impedance. To obtain the Q-factor of a high-order system, an equivalent circuit analysis method is proposed and illustrated through several classical passive damped LCL- and LLCL-filters. It is shown that both the RC parallel damper that is in parallel with the capacitor of the LCL-filter or with the Lf-Cf resonant circuit of the LLCL-filter, and the RL series damper in series with the grid-side inductor have their own application limits. Thus, a composite passive damped LLCL-filter for the grid-tied inverter is proposed, which can effectively suppress the possible resonance in case that the grid impedance varies in a wide range. Simulation results are good agreement with the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128595989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern power conversion devices are to be employed in order to create such networks by connecting them to three-phase ac power systems. This work present the evaluation of two-level and three-level (NPC) bidirectional voltage source rectifier topologies for bipolar dc active networks from the perspective of power semiconductor efforts, efficiency, volume and weight. The evaluation methodology based on the rotating reference frame is used in the analysis of a 160 kVA NPC converter feeding unbalanced dc loads and the impact of this in the converter volume and weight is presented. Furthermore, the maximum dc-side load unbalance for the NPC rectifier is derived.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"303-304 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130832926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the typical average power production from a WEC is lower than that of other power plants, typically less than 1 MW. Array connection of several WECs can mitigate these shortcomings by increasing both the power output and quality. The focus of this paper is to analyze Fred. Olsen designed WEC system Bolt 2 Wavehub and the effect of expanding to a small array. The required specifications for the array geometry, the electrical configuration and the overall system are discussed and a specific array design consisting of 7 WECs is suggested as a solution and analyzed in detail. The results show that the peak to average power ratio can be reduced by a factor of 4 if the array covers a full wave length.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127115350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimization in this field reveal to be more and more important because the local generation and consumption of electrical power, even for grid connected generators can suffers for unevenness of wind source exploitation, also in terms of wrong directions and in not regular wind flows. Computer aided design and optimization of small plants may give significant improvements in the development of the wind source also in accordance with the projections of future energy policies that foresee a significant increase of the wind generated energy for the future market. The effectiveness of computer aided optimization tools is illustrated in the present paper with the exposition of two case studies. In the first of them a Wind Electrical Energy Generating System is moved by a Modular Multiple Blade Fixed Pitch Wind Turbine coupled with an asynchronous wound rotor generator. In the second case study the optimization regards a Savonius wind turbine and a PM synchronous generator with particular reference to the development of wind source for the wind turbine and the reduction of saturation and of harmonic content in the emf for the electrical machines.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130133678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the atmospheric conditions, the state of charge of the battery and the load conditions, six possible operation modes of the bi-directional DC/DC are also expounded. This paper proposes a hybrid control strategy with the combination of the PI control and the direct output current control to avoid the voltage surge of the DC bus caused by the mode switching. A 5kW wind power system test bench is developed to verify the effectiveness of the control strategy. The experimental results show that the voltage surge can be limited within 5% and the controller performs well in various wind speed and load conditions.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134548967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DG system is first compared and contrasted with the synchronous generator (SG) system using their mathematical expressions. The differential equations of the two systems that govern the frequency and phase of the generator output are similar. On the other hand, the effects of the DG and SG control systems on the generator behavior are different because of the difference in the response time of the control systems. The numerical experiment results show that the stability criteria of the DG system have different characteristics from that of the SG system.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126230120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a generalized modulator for the seven-level FC based ANPC converter. The proposed modulator is applied independently in each phase of the converter and selects the switching states based on the deviation of the FC voltages from the reference value in order to maintain the FCs and the neutral point voltage of the converter balanced. The modulator is independent of the modulation technique selected for the converter and can operate under both sinusoidal and selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation. Simulation results for both modulation techniques indicate the operation of the converter while regulating the FC and NP voltages to their references under steady state and dynamic changes and illustrate its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127518604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new solution has a Propeller Turbine (PT) integrated with the PMSG. The turbine operates at variable speed and therefore the generator produces voltages at variable magnitude and frequency. For that reason the generated energy has to be converted by a Power Electronics Unit (PEU) to fit the parameters of the external grid. Those units: the integrated turbine with generator and the converter are described in the article and the results of tests performed in order to achieve the best efficiency of energy conversion for the real life object of 150kW are presented.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125691499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus is on autonomous MGs that dynamically should perform similarly to the conventional power systems. During MG autonomous operation, the generators should accomplish the frequency control process, by means of their automatic generation control. However, RES-based generators have poor controllability in terms of active power, and therefore the need of improving the MG power reserve by adding energy storage systems is often demanded. The proposed HIL solution aims to improve the design of the BESS frequency control systems according to the MG characteristics, being based on aggregated models of the involved mechanisms in the MG dynamics. An experimental test bench including a real-time digital simulator with BESS controller in the HIL structure is used for assessing the proposed system performances.","PeriodicalId":146438,"journal":{"name":"2012 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Power Electronics for Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122771140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
