In this work we discuss the efficiency of S-MAC, a well-known MAC protocol for WSNs, and propose an improvement on the protocol. Via an extensive simulation study considering the cases of both a simple linear topology and a complicated tree topology used for structural health monitoring, the performance evaluation of the enhanced protocol shows that it outperforms the original version of S-MAC in energy conservation.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122967233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Broadband is becoming a part of our household infrastructure, in the same way we receive water, gas and electricity. It is envisaged that every device will have a network interface that allows it to be accessed and controlled from anywhere in the world. This idea is generating a great deal of interest where sound business models are being developed to realise such applications based on market and user needs. That will map the future direction of Internet and home technologies. However, despite the long list of advantages of enabling these choices, they produced many other consequences and challenges; notably, interoperability and the difficulties associated with the integration of combined functionalities. In this paper we detail our approach in solving the interoperability problem presented in our wireless networked appliances interoperability architecture (WNAIA). We present the architecture components design and our implementation details that prove the functionality of the architecture.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115737836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recovery technique is one significant requirement for traffic management to support QoS guaranteed tunnels, according to link/node failure or topology changes in mobile network. Therefore, a number of recovery schemes for MPLS has been proposed in recent years. However, most of the current schemes focus only on wire network and are short of solution for multiple failures recovery in such dynamic topologies. Hence, this research proposes a recovery scheme called Modified Flexible MPLS Signaling (MFMS) for Mobile IP (MIP) over Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. It utilizes Merging Point of recovery Optimization (MPO) to evaluate the nearest active upstream node to be Merging Point of recovery (MP) node. This can achieve the multiple failures problem and gain faster rerouting response time. However, additional signaling overhead exchanging is concerned. The performance of the proposed signaling scheme is presented through simulations.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126717753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mobile medicine system contains: (i) blood pressure and body temperature measurement value, (ii) medical signals measured by the electrocardiogram device, (iii) mobile patient's history, (iv) G.729 audio signal and MPEG-4 CCD sensor video signal. By the help of the multi-code CDMA spread spectrum communication system with downlink power control strategy to make it possible for transmission media in this system to meet the quality of service of mobile medicine system, and achieve the purpose of the maximum resource utilization. In different media, the power is controlled according to the demand for bit error rate. Higher transmission power is given to the media requesting lower bit error rate. Numerical analysis shows that the ratio of transmission power of voice, video and data virtual channels are approximately 1:2:13 when the bit error rates for the voice, video and data are set at 10/sup -3/, 10/sup -4/ and 10/sup -7/. It is similar to the ratio of SNIR of voice, video and data transmission requirement. Meanwhile, we also test related mobile medical signal transmission and simulation.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124292587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This novel approach can be used to achieve a variety of security objectives through the peer-to-peer authentication scheme. It scales well to large network size and does not require high node density and mobility speed like other distributed schemes. After forming clusters with a radius parameter, it allows separate authentication services to be employed for different physical conditions or security requirements into independent clusters, and each node in the network can obtain the topology of the clusters as well as the keys of all authentication services. The topology describes the trust relationship among clusters and is used to evaluate the trustworthiness of clusters. Finally, we evaluate the security scheme and simulate its performance on various configurations.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125288856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As an exponent of mobile information units, RFID (radio frequency identification) and wireless sensor networks (WSN) play a key roll in this future. In every real-world object, RFID tag information is combined with sensor data to embody \"smart\" entities. These entities move freely, providing their sensor values and identity and getting in return personalized services anywhere, anytime. Entities interact, creating grouped objects that provide unified and meaningful information, widely extending the available services. But how to control this ubiquitous flow of information? How will users really benefit from it? In this paper we introduced WISSE, a framework that defines the interaction between mobile RFID/WSN entities and the services they receive.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"504 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127597525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When a mobile host requests a data item (replica) held by another mobile host, it usually uses the shortest path for the data transmission. In this case, mobile hosts at the center of the network relay many data items and consume much power. In this paper, we propose a data access method to balance the power consumption among mobile hosts. This method selects a path between the request issuing host and the requested data holder considering the path length and the remaining amount of batteries of mobile hosts along the path. We present simulation results to evaluate the performance of our proposed method.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117100954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on a type of indoor positioning systems called location fingerprinting technique that utilizes received signal strength indication (RSSI) of wireless local area network (WLAN) interfaces. Thus far, many characteristics of RSSI have not been thoroughly investigated. Many researchers have relied on the RSSI as sensor information to determine objects location while ignoring the characteristic of RSSI. Therefore, this paper looks into underlying mechanism of RSSI from the indoor positioning systems perspective. In particular, the distributions of RSSI from five different IEEE 802.11b/g WLAN interfaces are investigated using extensive measurement experiments. Desired properties of WLAN interfaces for location fingerprinting are also identified based on the measurement results. The ultimate goal is to use additional knowledge gained here to improve positioning performance and to model location fingerprinting based indoor positioning systems.","PeriodicalId":145728,"journal":{"name":"2006 1st International Symposium on Wireless Pervasive Computing","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124110548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
