Resiliency mechanisms that help to continue system operation in spite of failures introduce overhead due to the need to maintain redundant information. Earlier performance studies of DDBMS have either altogether ignored failure or studied only limited aspects of the effect of failures and performance of resiliency mechanisms. In this paper an analytical model is used to comprehensively characterize the effect of failures and resiliency mechanisms on the performance of DDBMS. Two new performance measures are introduced. The methodology is illustrated by comparatively evaluating the performance of three algorithms.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114233339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes the integration of recursive queries and non first normal form relations by providing a recursion mechanism which can be nested according to the structure of a non first normal form relation. It is shown by examples that this method can be used to formulate queries which are rather cumbersome if only flat relations are used. Especially, in some cases the problem of performing a selection on a recursively defined relation disappears. This question has been the topic of several research papers recently. Moreover, many queries can be formulated in a more natural way than in the world of flat tuples. Therefore, nested recursive queries in combination with non first normal form relations provide a contribution to the problem of modelling complex data.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131914632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NASA has tried to alleviate this problem for ocean scientists, by initiating a program. the NASA Ocean Data System (NODS). The menu-based user interface that NODS employs allows a user to make requests and recieve answers within a short time of accessing the system. A catalog system, which holds information about oceanographic data sets may be queried to determine the suitability of a particular data set. Once a candidate data set is found, the user is directed to the person or place which actually holds the data. NODS also has an archive system that holds data from ocean-observing satellites. The archive may be queried to obtain a manageable data subset that can be delivered in a useful form.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"8 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114031904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The symmetry of the binary tree architecture for a dictionary machine is exploited to obtain fault-secureness with little overhead. The proposed design utilizes only one extra processor and with some other modifications to the structure of the processors, can detect a single failure of a processor or a link. The proposed design keeps two copies of each record and whenever a record is extracted from the machine the two copies are compared to detect if any fault has occurred. The low overhead is a result of observing the fact that at any given time all the processors of the machine need not be active and these potentially-idle processors are used to do redundant processing to enable detecting single faults.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128272147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Protocol verification is a procedure to validate the logic correctness of these interaction sequences and detect the potential design errors. A relational approach is proposed to represent a finite-state machine as a transition relation. On this basis, relational algebra can be utilized to derive the global-state transitions of the system. Furthermore, the logic errors of the protocol such as deadlocks, incomplete specifications and nonexecutable interactions can all be formulated in terms of relational algebra. This approach has been implemented on the INGRES and DBASE-III database systems running on various machines and applied to the verification of several protocols including the CCITT X.21. Protocol verification represents a non-traditional data processing application of relational database systems.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128846083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we show how recursive CAD entities can be manipulated using an extended projection function. The new function finds nested sub-entities within entities that are modeled as trees of aggregations and generalizations. It allows these sub-entities to be found using expressions that are independent of the complexity of an entity's data structure. We describe the new function, its relationship to the transitive closure function, and its implementation in a CAD database system.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124514746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four different parallel join algorithms are proposed for execution on multiple processing nodes interconnected on a tree structured communication network. Secondary storage is accessed in parallel by leaf nodes. An average execution cost analysis is presented for the multiple processor join methods. For a reasonable ratio of result to operand cardinality, joins which use hashing for semi-join of operands at the leaf node secondary storage interface are predicted to perform better than nested-loop and sort-merge joins. Both node memory capacity and join result cardinality have a large influence on the relative performance of the join methods. This analysis method forms a basis for selecting among alternative processing methods for statically linked, multiple processor computer architectures.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114492932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is novel in several ways. First, it gives to users the capability of defining rules as well as data to a DBMS. Moreover, depending on the scope of each rule defined, optimization is handled differently. This leads to good performance both in the case that there are many rules each of small scope and a few rules each of large scope. In addition, rules provide either a forward chaining control flow or a backward chaining one, and the system will choose the control mechanism that optimizes performance in the cases that it is possible. Furthermore, priority rules can be defined, thereby allowing a user to specify rules systems that have conflicts. This use of exceptions seems necessary in many applications. Lastly, our rule system can support an implementation of views, protection and integrity control, simply by applying the rules system in a particular way. Consequently, no special purpose code need be included to handle these tasks.","PeriodicalId":145433,"journal":{"name":"1987 IEEE Third International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122469196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
