It asks how the abbey conditioned, reinforced, and\u0000 engendered its place in the history of the Western religious tradition.\u0000 Its physical location and environment are critical to understanding its\u0000 history of settlement and inhabitation, time and again, after repeated\u0000 episodes of destruction and exile. But how exactly did the abbey achieve\u0000 this sacralised status? And what historical conditions contributed to\u0000 Monte Cassino’s growth and prosperity beyond a localised influence? As\u0000 argued throughout this chapter, the abbey’s spiritual and historical allure\u0000 are defining features of its past, demonstrating formative qualities for\u0000 understanding the abbey’s identity and sense of its own history, culture,\u0000 and tradition.

It asks two\u0000 principal questions: why, after every episode of destruction between the\u0000 sixth and twentieth centuries, was it deemed necessary to rebuild the\u0000 abbey? And, how was this task successfully achieved? Such questioning\u0000 necessarily considers the role of human agency, both individual and\u0000 collective, in the overall enterprise. But it also counters the problem of\u0000 historical determinism: the view, in this case, that the abbey’s recovery\u0000 was somehow inevitable or predetermined.

Recognition of its value became\u0000 formalised as external interest in its preservation increased; as an object\u0000 deemed worthy of protection, the abbey came to signify not only a united\u0000 Europe, but an emblem of Western civilisation. This chapter traces the\u0000 development of this idea, paying particular attention to its emergence\u0000 and uniqueness in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It argues for\u0000 Monte Cassino’s role in this era as an etic symbol of continuity capable of\u0000 transcending national and international borders – an order of ideas whose\u0000 interrogation reveals a process of consecration and institutionalisation.

Its\u0000 lived experiences account for the abbey’s role in the second half of the\u0000 twentieth century as the binding agent and promoter for a unified Europe.\u0000 This chapter makes sense of this unique designation by examining the\u0000 way(s) in which the abbey’s fractured past has been harnessed into this\u0000 synthetic vision. It asks how Monte Cassino’s ‘destruction tradition’ – that\u0000 evolving narrative and shared reality from the Middle Ages to the present\u0000 day – served as an instrument for promoting the abbey’s faith and prosperity\u0000 well into the twentieth century. Telling their stories is fundamental to understanding the abbey’s\u0000 representation over time. This historical exercise is critical also to framing\u0000 Monte Cassino’s resilience and rationalisation in the face of great adversity,\u0000 which is a necessary step towards explaining its full-scale resurrection\u0000 in the aftermath of destruction. Treating each case in tandem provides a\u0000 wider view of the abbey’s ‘destruction tradition’ over fourteen centuries;\u0000 its focus also explains and positions these episodes in the construction\u0000 of Monte Cassino’s true identity during the process of recovery, which\u0000 inevitably followed.

The\u0000 abbey’s manifold experience with destruction and recovery reveals a profound\u0000 transformation of historical meaning and value, which is manifested\u0000 in the twenty-first century. This epilogue reflects on the representation\u0000 of Monte Cassino’s history as the centre of Western culture, learning,\u0000 and civilisation – a legacy that has repeatedly shaped and propelled its\u0000 ‘use-value’. This assigned relevance – from the early Middle Ages to the\u0000 present day – takes much of its meaning from the abbey’s ‘destruction\u0000 tradition’ – the interplay between ‘destruction’ and ‘recovery’, death and\u0000 resurrection, adversity and perseverance.
