This architecture, which is shared by both control and management entities, smoothly integrates real-time QoS oriented communications services such as those offered in the public telephone network, with everyday services of the Internet. A prototype system is presented with a focus on virtual services that facilitate rapid service deployment. A streams service and an N:1 push service are described in detail as examples of virtual services. The system also features, as supporting components, virtual interfaces that pass QoS information in both directions between the network and an end system, and a domain resources manager (DRM) for maintaining network control policies.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115370274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, a brief introduction into TINA concepts, and the motivation of the work are presented. Then, both the information and the computational models of the GSC are described. Particular emphasis is given to major contributions of the work, namely flexible and transparent management of dynamic modification sequences treated as atomic units, and negotiation supporting concurrent voting. A simple scenario exemplifies GSC functionality's.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126964913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They handle the dynamic locations of mobile users and terminals and maintain the allocation of personal service profiles. The author is developing an open mobility management platform that contains a set of support functions and APIs on which mobility management services can be easily built. The platform performs location and profile handling based on distributed X.500 directory services and implements the required mobility management signalling protocols based on X.500 and LDAP directory access protocols. Additionally the platform offers three mobility abstraction levels that he uses to build mobile and location-aware multimedia applications. He developed a multi-master replication protocol for the directory servers inside the platform to fulfil the demanding performance and availability requirements of corporate networks. The mobility management services built on this platform can be easily customised to changing and evolving requirements and the platform functionality can be extended due to the generic directory service approach.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127806776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Connection set up and release are one of the most frequent signalling activities in the network. In order to handle the growth of connection volume and service types, it is important to design a signalling platform that explores concurrency, allows different control algorithms to be implemented, and to make it easy to redistribute control intelligence. Based on these principles, they developed a connection management platform and quantified their benefits. They have implemented three different connection set up algorithms to study different design alternatives of the platform. In addition, they compared the performance and scalability of these three algorithms.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127249711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In support of general purpose computation, symmetric multiprocessing has generally proven better than attached processors, master/slave, or other configurations. The authors examine a different approach, an asymmetric multiprocessor operating system (AsyMOS) which applies a subset of available processors toward supporting an abstraction of a virtual \"smart device\". As a software solution, AsyMOS is able to exploit the cost/performance advantages of sharing memory and packaging that accrue to small scale SMPs, while tracking processor performance much more tightly than front-end processors can. The ability to move OS functionality into the \"smart\" device is demonstrated in the context of a network subsystem. Application-specific resource management is facilitated by the exporting of interfaces directly to applications. A prototype implementation of the architecture running on commodity hardware demonstrates quantitative advantages over a traditionally structured SMP operating system and provides a framework for further research into functional devolution.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116815775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on mobile code, demand loading, and caching techniques. The architecture of the system allows new protocols to be dynamically deployed at both routers and end systems, without the need for coordination and without unwanted interaction between co-existing protocols. They describe the architecture and its realization in a prototype implementation. To demonstrate how to exploit the architecture, they present two simple protocols that operate within the prototype to introduce multicast and mobility services into a network that initially lacks them.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120986880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This way, an open interface between the service delivery and the service management systems is defined. The model includes a set of cooperating objects that can be customized for particular service and management requirements. By applying this model to the design of mcast, an ATM multicast service, the authors enable the management system to monitor and control mcast sessions. To validate their approach, they have implemented mcast and the management functions on two different platforms: (1) on a high-performance emulation platform, which allows one to study the system's dynamic behavior and scaling properties in various scenarios; (2) on a broadband testbed running xbind, on which network services can be fully implemented, including the transport between multimedia devices. CORBA technology is used for building the service control system as well as the management system.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129105402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each block of information to be communicated is operated on by several organs, e.g. for routing, integrity and flow control. The architecture retains a skeleton protocol stack to determine the sequence of these operations. However, unlike conventional stacks, the operators themselves are separate from the layers of the stack. This functional architecture eliminates several shortcomings that plague layered systems. The architecture provides a path along which current systems can evolve to provide the performance and economy that will be required in the future.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125925782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tau supports the nonlayered composition of protocol functions. A key part of the Tau framework is a generic protocol interface, which hides from protocol functions the details of other protocol functions with which they are composed. Structuring this generic protocol interface is an interesting and challenging design question. The paper presents an overview of the design goals and pieces of the Tau framework, and argues that a reactive programming model offers advantages for both reasoning about and implementing the generic protocol interface. The authors also describe their experience in composing protocol functions using a reactive model to implement the NETBLT bulk-data transfer protocol.","PeriodicalId":143696,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128994383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
