First,\u0000the problem of demodulation is formulated in terms of the\u0000state-space modelling of the vibration signal. This is achieved\u0000by approximating the modulations using the orthogonal\u0000trigonometric polynomial function of the rotating speed.\u0000Kalman filtering is then used to estimate the coefficients\u0000of the polynomials in order to reconstruct the modulation\u0000signals. This approach is different from classic approaches\u0000such as the narrowband demodulation technique (NBDT)\u0000or time-synchronous averaging (TSA). The advantages of\u0000the proposed approach over the latter are discussed in this\u0000paper and the efficiency of the new approach is also evaluated\u0000using both synthetic and real gearbox vibration signals.

Previous studies have illustrated how\u0000this can be achieved using internal vibration measurements\u0000recorded from a sensor placed on the planet carrier. It was\u0000shown in these studies that the timing of identifiable fault\u0000symptoms in the vibration signal relative to the phase of the\u0000gear-mesh component depends on which of the planet gears\u0000carries a fault. A signal processing technique is then developed\u0000to locate the position of a spalled gear using internal vibration\u0000measurements. However, internally mounted sensors are not\u0000commonly used in planetary gearboxes and it is much more\u0000convenient to mount sensors externally, for example on the\u0000gearbox casing. Therefore, this study extends the concept\u0000of using mesh phasing relationships to locate faulty planet\u0000gears, this time using external vibration measurements. The\u0000updated procedure is validated using experimental data\u0000collected from a test-rig running under a range of operating\u0000conditions. The results show that the updated procedure is\u0000able to identify the locations of faulty planet gears so long as\u0000an absolute phase reference (for example from a tachometer)\u0000of the planet carrier is available.
