However, these shift towards such pandemic pop-up infrastructures are precarious. With an emphasis on speed over process, pop-ups have invariably been deployed without oversight or engagement, and rarely involving the voices of racialized or vulnerable people. Focusing on the cities of Toronto (Canada) and Sydney (Australia), this chapter argues that the significance of pop-ups extends beyond immediate infrastructure needs in response to a pandemic, to how cities govern more generally.","PeriodicalId":143200,"journal":{"name":"Volume 3: Public Space and Mobility","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127279826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, very little has been discussed in relation to public spaces and everyday life in Indian cities. The impact of the lockdown on public spaces can mean different things to different user groups. Using a socio-spatial lens, this chapter critically reflects on the role of everyday public spaces in Indian cities during the pandemic and how they potentially provide revealing insights on power relations and urban inequalities. Drawing upon theories from human geography, phenomenology, urban studies, environmental psychology, the chapter situates urban informality in public spaces in India within the everyday socio-spatial narratives of identity and belonging, the right to city and equity opportunities in cities.","PeriodicalId":143200,"journal":{"name":"Volume 3: Public Space and Mobility","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122417906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter draws on recent research on the importance of urban green spaces for mental wellbeing and the impacts of COVID-19 on users’ experiences of urban parks and public spaces in Sheffield. It describes which publics are served by public space in a pandemic, and who is excluded and made invisible through shifting perceptions and uses of green spaces.","PeriodicalId":143200,"journal":{"name":"Volume 3: Public Space and Mobility","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116877630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
