It covers an area of about 924,000 km2. It is bordered on the north by Niger Republic, on the east by Chad and Cameroon, on the south by the Gulf of Guinea, and on the west by the Republic of Benin. The north-west Geopolitical zone of Nigeria was created from parts of the former Northern Region of the country. It comprises seven states namely: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. It is mostly populated mainly by Hausas and Fulanis. Generally, Library and Information Science (LIS) education is usually discussed within the framework of education and the particular environment where it is offered. Additionally, global trend is also an issue of consideration in any meaningful discussion. LIS education in Nigeria started in 1960 with the establishment of the first Library School at the then University College Ibadan now known as the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, since then, LIS education has made significant progress and contribution to the education and training of Library and Information professionals in Nigeria and even beyond. As a result, LIS education courses are provided at different tertiary institutions i.e. Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges. This paper explicitly reports on the current status of LIS education/curriculum in universities in North-West Geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It provides an overview of the institutions in the zone providing LIS courses at various levels, namely: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Bayero University, Kano, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina and Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano. The discussion gives particular attention to the types of programmes these LIS schools offer, teaching/learning resources, curricula content and the number of academic staff in each of the institutions. The paper also examines the challenges faced by the LIS schools; and as well recommends measures for overcoming the challenges.","PeriodicalId":142897,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124887819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

School libraries are considered as learning laboratories whose equipment include all instructional materials required for educational purposes and development. These instructional materials should be managed with the assistance of well-trained school librarians and other library staff. School librarians are as well saddled with the responsibility of educating students and assisting them to develop the ability of solving problems associated with their Information needs. This paper focuses on examining the strategies for the effective utilisation of the school library resources by Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Ilesa West Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), Ilesa, Osun State. The schools in this Local Government Area had a total population of 10,210 students. Purposive sampling method was used where only seven (7) JSS were purposively selected for the study out of the ten (10) JSS. Again, purposive sampling technique was used to determine the class and number of students to be used in each of the sampled schools thus eliminating classes with no resources. The total number of JSS3 students stood at 674. Questionnaires were designed for both students and staff to collect pertinent data.","PeriodicalId":142897,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127986995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Survey research design was deployed, while quantitative research method was adopted using questionnaire for data gathering. The population of the study was nine hundred and fourteen (914), where a sample size of two hundred and seventy-eight (278) was determined using Research Advisors Table. Questionnaire was administered on the sample size and the data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings discovered that eLibrary is available with functional twenty (20) All-in-One Computer Workstations. It was revealed that OPAC, EbiscoHost, Research4Life, ScienceDirect, and e-resources (textbooks and journals) on Nursing, Law, Medical Laboratory Science, and Public Health are available. Few e-resources for all other twelve programmes in the university are also available in the eLibrary. Findings discovered that, e-references, CD-ROM, e-bibliography and e-archives were not available. It was also discovered that the available electronic information resources, though, accessible, but were not sufficientfor adequate use by the respondents. Considerably, majority of the respondents have a positive perception of electronic information resources and services. The study recommended that there should be acquisition of more data bases in addition to those in use, as well as, subscription to more e-resources, especially books and journals, which will cut across all the twelve programmes in the university. This will improve patronage and satisfaction of the patrons in order to justify the huge amount invested in the project. the use of electronic information resources in the Fountain University Library. The findings revealed that e-journal, e-database, e-book and internet are utilized daily, weekly and occasionally than other e-resources. Result further showed a low usage of OPAC, e-dictionary and CD-ROM. Overall, the usage level of electronic information resources by undergraduate students can be rated average. Low use of CD-ROMs, OPAC and e-dictionary may as well be attributed to advancement in technology and proliferation of Internet access with the use of mobile phone, modem and router among library users. The finding corroborated with the findings of Ikoja-Odongo and Okello-Obura (2013) who recorded low number (11.6%) of the respondents in the used of CD-ROM.","PeriodicalId":142897,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115121411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While analysing the data in this research work, it was discovered that although 99% of the respondents have heard about TEEAL and the usefulness, only very few of the respondents actually utilize the electronic library. This poor utilization was however linked to several points such as poor power supply, inadequate computer systems in the library and limitations in the accessibility of the library due to working hours. The researchers of this work however discovered that researchers still prefer other means of sourcing research information such as Google search and periodicals, which can be easily accessed via the mobile telephone and related devices.","PeriodicalId":142897,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCES","volume":"15 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131840669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
