Landsberg's influence on the disciplines of climate. It had originally been planned to mark a milestone in Landsberg's career (he was to be 80 years old on 9 February 1986) but unfortunately Professor Landsberg died while traveling as a participant of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Climate Commission in Geneva on 6 December 1985. Consequently the occasion was used to sum up a unique and phenomenally productive career spanning some 55 years. The highlights of that illustrious period were presented during the symposium. It should be noted that, although Landsberg retired officially some ten years ago, he remained active with no diminution in his productivity until the end of his life. Since Landsberg had dedicated his last 20 years to the service of the University of Maryland, it was only fitting that the university should honor him with this symposium. The meeting was held in the Adult Education Center of the university and was attended by some 150 scientists and friends, many of whom had shared some professional experience with Landsberg. The commemorative ceremony attracted an even larger audience, which included family, friends, acquaintances, and coworkers from the entire Washington metropolitan region. The program consisted of three parts, beginning with Landsberg's general influence on climate. This was followed by a session highlighting his specific influences on climate, and several of the many disciplines in which he shone were reviewed. Finally, later in the day, a commemorative ceremony was held during which many of the agencies that Landsberg had worked for acknowledged his contributions. This ceremony was followed by a reception at which all the attendees could and did reminisce. This latter process was enhanced by the informal showing of an edited video interview of Landsberg taped several years ago. The symposium was opened by welcoming remarks from John B. Slaughter, chancellor of the University of Maryland, College Park Campus.
