Significant discrepancies between policy rhetoric and budgetary commitments suggest that there is a need for realignment. Advocating an ‘environment-centric’ approach, the study calls for increased budgetary commitments to environmental protection, a strategic shift away from fossil fuels, and stringent regulatory oversight, all essential to ensure sustainable development in India.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46753545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 50 samples (raw milk, ultra-high temperature milk, pasteurised milk, pasteurised and traditional butter, and pasteurised and traditional cheese) were randomly collected from June to August 2022, and their pesticide contents were examined through high-performance liquid chromatography. Out of the 50 samples, 38, 42, and 100% contained cypermethrin, deltamethrin, and hexachlorobenzene over the maximum residue limit set by the EU, respectively. Traditional butter had Cypermethrin and hexachlorobenzene means concentration of 75.64 ± 22.40 and 61.69 ± 17.78 µg/kg, respectively.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42657431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data gathered using a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews revealed that 48% of respondents had moderate-to-high levels of knowledge, 87% of respondents showed a negative attitude, and 46% performed poor practices in plastic waste disposal. There was a statistically significant association of education level and employment status of residents with plastic waste disposal. The knowledge, attitude, and practices of households were unsatisfactory though not significantly associated with plastic waste disposal. There is a need to use formal and informal education on waste management and improve access to affordable waste disposal services.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44362080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased usage with irresponsible disposal and the high molecular weight of plastic that prevents quick and natural degradation has made this versatile material into an environmental hazard that is threatening life both on land and in the oceans. With estimates of more plastics in the ocean than the fish by 2050 under a business-as-usual scenario, marine plastic litter has begun to affect human sustenance. This paper aims to provide a review of the efforts to reduce plastic litter worldwide.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47909927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A convenience sampling technique was employed to select 152 landfill-waste pickers, and the respondent-driven sampling technique was used to select 53 street-waste pickers. We discovered that waste pickers were exposed to occupational health risks such as body pain, tiredness, twisted ankles, chest pain, and eye soreness. Non-use of personal protective equipment contributed to waste pickers’ susceptibility to occupational health risks. Most waste pickers were dissatisfied with their well-being connected to the unhealthy conditions in which they work, the extreme poverty they live in, and the stigmatisation they experience. The study concludes that waste pickers’ well-being is critical for effective solid waste management; hence, they should be considered adequately in policy design and implementation programs/strategies.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41778471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once on the beach, stinging sand, keeps away, early morning striders. So, I have the whole place to myself! When I approach the intertidal fence to the bird sanctuary, alarmed, a sudden flock of terns, takes off from the mud flats at the Lourens river’s estuary, into the wind. Fifty plus give aloft, from a standing start, (joined by some Hartlaub’s gulls) in perfect unison, an aerial display, second to none. In unerring formation, they split into two groups and spiral up, then peel left and right, bank, dive, swoop and spread, split again, half peeling right, half, left. They combine, soar, advance, and just before they reach me, split again, bank right and left, circle inwards, cross paths, wingtip to wingtip, almost touching, in perfect formation. Enthralled, I cheer! Then there’s a victory swoop and a perfect landing, yonder, at the water’s edge; in the ripples. The gulls, equally enthralled, copy the flight perfectly; breathless, but beaming.","PeriodicalId":14117,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environmental Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44648330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
