In the energy-intensive industries, for examp le, this immed iate and direct perspective can result in the incurring of costs that are greatly magnified by the large amount of power consumed. Few would therefore deny the importance of electricity as an essential input to production and to economic activity in general. Based on the fact that changes in electricity prices impact on basically each and every individual in South Africa, and mo re specifically on an energy utility provider's core business, it is important to determine its effect on each of these entities. The develop ment of an analytical Cost of Production Tipping Po int (CoPTP) model, combined with the economy-wide modelling capabilit ies of an Applied General Equilib riu m (A GE) model for South Africa, will help to determine what the potential impact would be, given the market forces at play at any particular instance. The aim of this paper is therefore to help develop an understanding of the impact of increasing electricity prices on an energy utility provider's main assets - its customers, by determining the broader potential economic impact on the South African economy. The value of this framewo rk is therefore that it will provide strategic context, will allow for a better understanding of the influence of electricity price increases on both energy-intensive and -dependent industries, while also informing key stakeholders regard ing imp lications of potential changes in customer operational environ ments to an energy utility provider in terms of potential revenue risk implications, as well as to the rest of industry and the broader market in South Africa due to potential second round feedback effects.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81541092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Solar Power Plant (SPT) technology using the Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP) is expected to soon enter the renewable energy field in Egypt. Fortunately, considerable amount of informat ion about the PS10, which is a co mmercial SPT of power 11 MW are availab le for performing considerable attractive analysis . A co mparative performance analysis is developed between the existing PS10 in Sanlucar la Mayor- Spain, and a modified one of similar specifications located in Aswan. In this study, the PS10 So lar Po wer Tower systems (SPT) design-layout is revised to suit the solar data in Aswan. Accordingly, the location of each heliostat is reviewed, analysed and modified. The solar irradiance model and sunshine duration (solar hours) of the existing plant in Spain are co mpared to those in Aswan. The study includes optical and geometric analysis of both SPTs. The annual average efficiency and SPT performance values in the existing and intended power stations are compared. Su itable mod ifications are introduced in the SP10 to fit the conditions in Aswan according to the innovated field of the heliostats. The main objective of this study is to find the relative advantage of installation of the CSPs in Aswan compared to the other locations in the world. The innovated model of PS10 in Aswan is believed to be more pro mising than that of the original one in Spain.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75065245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, in this paper, an attempt has been made to tackle the major power quality issues related to induction generators operating as grid connected induction (GCIG) and self excited induction generator (SEIG). MATLA B SIMULINK models as developed for GCIG and SEIG operation are found to be useful to analyse these effects. Simu lated results as obtained on these induction generators have been used to identify the machine parameters affecting the power quality issues such as active & reactive power, total harmonic d istortion etc. Further analysis of simulated results for two operating modes i.e. GCIG and SEIG seems to be useful fo r the design of such generators for overall power quality improvements.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90207830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to higher thermal to power efficiency, CCPPs show superior response characteristics compared to those of other conventional steam power plants. For that reason, frequent load changes on the system, which som etimes include daily start and stop (DSS) operation, would impose additional burden on the structural elements. The main objective o f this work is to analy ze the thermal stress conditions as related to the observed failure on the structural elements of HRSG casing, and to find root causes of failure of mechanical integrity. To achieve this goal, field measurements were performed to record temperatures of wall and stiffener of the casing fro m a real plant in operation. To consider the effect of hot gas on the casing, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of gas flow inside the HRSG with appropriate wall conditions using FLUENT V12. Thermal stress analysis on the thin wall of the casing and stiffeners of HRSG was conducted with the temperature data from the CFD results, using ANSYS Workbench V12. Su mmarizing the computational results, some limited ideas were presented which would be useful to prevent damages.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89085619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For determination of the energy efficiency of thin or thick layers, heat and mass balances are established to the different co mponents. In the case of thick layers equations of porous med ia are used. These methods allow fo llo wing, in particular, the variat ions of the heated air and the product temperature and humidity. As a second part, the common way for the calculus of the exergetic efficiency passes through the establishment of exergy balance and after calculating the input, output and exergy loss. The influence and illustration of several parameters are as well presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80186261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A dynamic modeling and simulat ion of a grid connected VSWT driven DDSG with controllable power inverter strategies suitable for the study was developed, tested and verified. Th is dynamic model with its control scheme can regulate real power, maintain reactive power and generate voltage at different wind speeds. For th is paper, studies were conducted on a standard IEEE 14 bus system augmented by a rad ially connected wind power p lant (WPP) which contains 100 wind turbine generators (WTG). The studies include examin ing the voltage stability (λ-V) curves, voltage magnitude, reactive power delivered, loading margin and voltage collapse of the system. These voltage stability studies are done for the normal state as well as for line contingencies. It is found that large scale VSWT with DDSG at the transmission level has the potential to imp rove the long-term voltage stability of the grid by injecting react ive power with the help of controllable power inverter strategy.","PeriodicalId":14041,"journal":{"name":"International journal of energy engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89691022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
