However, despite the widespread use of MSs, the definition of their underlying characteristics and the evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to the expected outcomes still appear as two unresolved and neglected questions. This paper aims to contribute to answering these questions. First, a comparative analysis of the literature on management control systems (MCSs) and OHS-MSs was run, aiming to highlight how OHS-MSs share the same control-based philosophy and the same approach as MCSs. Then, an empirical investigation was conducted to gather the views of OHS key players from the Italian waste management sector. The comparative analysis of the literature, complemented by the empirical investigation, outlines the relationships between MCSs and OHS-MSs and highlights the consequent criticalities emerging in terms of risk prevention.","PeriodicalId":14036,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Health","volume":"8 1","pages":"164-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJENVH.2017.083976","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42689631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fish were exposed to Cd solutions (0.20 mg Cd. L-1) over a two-week term. The assayed concentration was environmentally realistic since it was frequently found in most highly polluted peri-urban water bodies in Argentina. No mortality was recorded among the animals during the experiments. The relationships between assimilation efficiency (U), oxygen consumption as a measure of specific metabolic rate (SMR) and ammonium excretion (AE) were determined. After exposure to Cd, a significant correlation was found between SMR and AE. It was concluded that under the assayed conditions the metal caused alterations in energy-related homeostasis of fish. Most of the responses may be interpreted as indicative of adaptations to compensate for increased energy requirements due to the physiological impairments caused by Cd.","PeriodicalId":14036,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Health","volume":"8 1","pages":"139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43430627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water samples were collected at two points and their toxicological profiles were compared: S1 (reference site), located downstream of a major city and S2, located further downstream, beyond a joint urban sewage and industrial discharge point. A number of abiotic parameters were determined and three water quality indices (WQIs) calculated on the samples. Laboratory toxicity bioassays were conducted exposing Lithobates catesbeianus larvae to samples; a third group of animals were exposed to tap water (controls). Hepatic biomarkers were determined: catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and GSH content; CF and HSI were calculated. The scores of the WQIs corresponded to a high pollution condition at both sampling points. ANOVA showed significant differences between sampling sites and controls mainly in CAT activity, GSH content and GST in autumn.","PeriodicalId":14036,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Health","volume":"8 1","pages":"150-163"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47906630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On evaluation he had intrahepatic cholestasis with persistently raised serum alkaline phosphatase, normal Gamma glutamyl transferase and raised serum bile acid levels. His liver biopsy showed bland cholestasis and electron microscopy showed granular bile suggestive of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type I. Medical therapy with ursodeoxycholic acid, cholestyramine, rifampicin with nutritional modification was successful in alleviating the symptoms and correcting the nutritional status. To our knowledge this is only the sixth case of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type I reported from India. Herein we discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic hurdles that one encounters in managing progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis and also review the literature regarding this rare disorder.</p>","PeriodicalId":14036,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Health","volume":"8 1","pages":"865"},"PeriodicalIF":2.3,"publicationDate":"2016-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5136740/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70147371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
