This paper presents an algorithm for the identification of microprogrammable loops based on the construction of an interval. Also, implementation strategies are discussed with respect to such implementation phases as synthesis of a new instruction and its loading into the control memory. Finally, from the performance point of view, the problem oriented architecture synthesis is compared with the CPU operation overlap.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124086082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It may be considered complementary to the known microprogram compaction algorithms in that it mainly deals with branching and looping structure of the source microprogram and not with its straight line segments. The method is based on systematic performance of a local microprogram transformation dynamically adjusted to the hardware derived constraints formulated separately.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129127718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These include not only obvious measures such as code size, performance and implementation cost, but also issues such as compatibility and especially design complexity.In an effort to reduce the design complexity, flexible or universal base designs have been used to realize various instruction sets or source problem requirements.Using either a dedicated or universal host, language oriented DEL architectures may offer some significant performance advantages over more traditional architectures.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125342202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CODES project began in October, 1982. It brings together the experience gained in earlier work to focus on the design and implementation of an integrated suite of microprogramming tools. The primary participants in this project are Dr. Joseph L. Linn, Dr. Subrata Dasgupta, Dr. Bruce D. Shriver, several full-time and part-time graduate research assistants at both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. level and several undergraduate students. The CODES project has been supported, in part, via funding from the Advanced Technology Laboratory of the RCA Corporation.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122906240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It discusses the traditional relationship between \"designing\" microcode and \"documenting\" microcode. It establishes a different relationship between designing and documenting, one where the primary emphasis is shifted to documentation. The activities of documenting become the \"process\" by which a quality design can be achieved. A strategic documentation framework combined with a high-level design language to form and test the proper solution is suggested as a means of achieving quality designs.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131249883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A trivial example is given that no classical compaction algorithm would compact optimally, because the computation of data precedence relations is dependent on the order of the source code. It is further argued that the classical compaction problem can be solved optimally in polynomial time, where the degree of the polynomial is dependent only on the micromachine architecture. We conclude that the most difficult portion of the microcode compaction problem is that of initially ordering the source code.","PeriodicalId":138968,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigmicro Newsletter","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126553005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
