Transmission towers are commonly made of galvanized steel, and although they constitute a vital artery for the supply of electricity, the corrosion problem should not be seen only as asset management to guarantee, its useful life but must also be analyzed from an operational perspective. The reason for this is when the structures corrode, they clearly affect their equivalent impedance, whose continuity was assumed to be effective, and was previously simulated before transient overvoltage phenomena to know their response to lightning discharges, to determine and select a correct insulation. For this reason, the structure corrosion, specially of the bolted joints, would increase the impedance of the tower and, consequently, the probability of a back flashover would also increase. But integral corrosion should not only be seen from the point of view of the structure, grounding, conductors, and fittings are also subject to corrosive phenomena, that affect the line. This article aims to detail all the corrosion characteristics that must be considered, at the time of design engineering, as well as solutions during operation that are directly focused on maintenance, according to international standards.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132658609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To develop this indicator, a method based on the use of a fog chamber was developed in which the insulators were contaminated with a degree of salinity that allowed them to exhibit high flashover activity. Simultaneously, partial discharge activity was measured and processed using Wavelet Transform and Principal Component Analysis. For each partial discharge pulse, a representative value was obtained that indicates its relationship with contamination. These results reveal the evolution of the discharges, showing the flashovers as the salinity of the insulator increases, even several minutes after the application of the saline solution. In some cases, the use of the solution was found to reduce partial discharge activity and mitigate flashovers. In this case, it has a washing effect on the salt adhering to the surface. This indicator can serve as the starting point for the creation of devices that can be placed near the insulators in the distribution lines for long periods to alert when a flashover might occur based on the evolution of the partial discharge activity.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132003196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the use of fossil fuels increases CO2 emissions in addition to the notorious signs of scarcity of this raw material worldwide. The country requires a search for new effective energy generation alternatives and allow an industrial development that, in turn, does not contribute to the existing environmental and social effects. This research presents an analysis of the crucial factors to be considered for biomass to generate electricity through a combined cycle thermoelectric power plant. Technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects are evaluated to define different stages covered by the generation process and it is considered convenient to treat urban solid waste from the Cerro Patacon landfill to be implemented as the plant’s raw material using gasification techniques. Under the conditions of the country, the results show that there is a potential profitability of the system when working within the hectares considered for the future stages of the Cerro Patacon landfill with 1000 tons of waste per day. Among the main conclusions, it should be noted that there is a high percentage of moisture in solid waste from the landfill and therefore a significant amount of the gross energy generated for the drying of the raw material is needed in order to optimize the gasification.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114333568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The statistical algorithm known as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was employed and its performance compared to BERTopic, a neural-based method that encompasses deep neural document embeddings, non-linear dimensionality reduction, and hierarchical density clustering. Both models achieved topic diversity and coherence, yielding interpretable results with different levels of semantic abstraction. Furthermore, taking advantage of BERTopic’s features, Dynamic Topic Modelling analysis showed global and evolutionary word frequency of health-related topics. Results can be used for in-depth analysis of political trends, even though more complex hyperparameter tuning might be necessary to achieve higher topic coherence and interpretability.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121830027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this effect has been extensively analyzed for the use of digital cells already, the analog domain can benefit greatly from dynamic characteristic changes of field effect transistors (FETs), too. This work presents various views on an RFET based differential stage circuit from the perspective of reconfigurability. Approaches include variations in bias current and transistor gain, which influence differential gains and output swing. Separate polarity bias of the two differential RFET allows for offset adjustment and cancellation without clocking. The resistance of the active load transistors can be modulated by their polarity gate and transform the differential stage to a single balanced differential mixer.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122137256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the Covid-19 pandemic, learning processes in educational institutions used multiple computer and electronic media. As for engineering programs, laboratory practices were discarded in many cases. This work develops a computer application with non-immersive virtual reality, applying a physical/actual laboratory guide in a virtual environment, in which a current loop for an Endress+Hausser PMD75 differential pressure transmitter had to be configured. This application was developed by students and the tutor of the AR/VR research incubator in conjunction with the teacher of the Industrial Instrumentation course, who acted as a client. The Unity3D game engine was used to simulate a tank, a cabinet and industrial instrumentation to measure the pressure at the bottom of the tank. Student were allowed to carry out the wiring of the different instruments inside the cabinet, and the configuration of the transmitter via a hand-terminal; In addition, the application includes a record of student events and interactions for future analysis. The perception of the application was evaluated through a survey applied to 43 students. The results showed that this tool, although it is a valuable support during virtual courses, and provides a first approach to real practice, the student requires interaction with real instruments. Therefore, the tool becomes a valuable complement prior to practices in a real laboratory.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123450515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Marine current intensity, bathymetry and distance to the shoreline were analyzed all over the Panamanian geography to choose the most adequate place for the farm. As a result, an 84 MW power station was proposed south off the Azuero Peninsula. With policies that promote the massive adoption of distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicles (EV), this scenario for the next decade would change. Considering the conventional demand curve and the auxiliary reserve systems, it is crucial to determine the potential impact of this change on the power grid. In this paper, we analyze the effect of energy transition policies focused on DG and EV on the demand side (DS) in such a way that we have a primary perspective on its effect on the demand curve and the possible implications for reserve programming and power system operation strategies. The study focuses on the demand curve of Panama City for the next five and ten years and allows us to determine the substantial changes in net demand, and thus take preventive measures.","PeriodicalId":138415,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 40th Central America and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123731179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
