In addition, composite rigid-frame bridges are challenging to construct owing to the need to connect different materials at the pier. Therefore, this study developed and demonstrated a composite rigid-frame bridge with a construction joint and anchors. The structural performance and composite behavior of the proposed construction joint were investigated by evaluating a direct connection between the girder and concrete prior to casting (Joint A), a plain construction joint (Joint B), and a construction joint with anchors (Joint C). Joints B and C exhibited 16.5% and 46.5% higher ultimate capacities, respectively, than did Joint A. Finite element analysis of Joint C was conducted, and its results were verified against the experimental results. Further, parameter analysis was performed to determine the effects of the steel girder strength and anchor diameter. The results indicated that the proposed construction joint with anchors exhibited excellent structural performance and composite behavior.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135365384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concrete mixed with 0–50% of palm oil fuel ash, using W/B ratio of 0.40–0.50 were examined. Available database of concrete samples under the sea water submersion at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 years was collected. The study found that the developed empirical model could predict total chloride content in palm oil fuel ash concrete at any position below the concrete surface, which had been submerged under sea water for 1 year and over. The W/B ratio is also limited between 0.40 and 0.50. Application of this model is valid in the situation where penetration of chloride is in one direction. It was also shown that the margin of errors in this study is within ± 35% range when compared to the results presented by other researchers.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136077606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Natural resources will run out as long as human consumption of them continues. Recycled concrete aggregate (RC) has thus emerged as a substitute material for the building of road base layers. Additionally, RC can be utilized to create interior city highways. The base layer for roads must have sufficient strength to support the working load on the pavement surface without damage deforming. As a result, the focus of this paper is on enhancing the structural performance of sandy soil reinforced with various RC percentages. The three key factors are relative soil density (Dr = 83 and 97%), recycled concrete aggregate reinforcing levels (RC = 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,40,50 and 100%), and reinforcement layer thickness (R d = 0.0B, 0.5B, B, and 2B where B is the footing model width). Numerous laboratory experiments were conducted in order to examine the impact of important parameters on the properties of the mixtures. The plate bearing tests were carried out using a footing model (250 × 250 mm) inside a tank (1500 × 1500x1000 mm) to ascertain the stress–strain response, bearing capacity ratio (BCR), ultimate bearing capacity, and modulus of elasticity of the tested mixtures. It is clear that raising the RC has no effect on the diameters of the grains. It was found that as RC increased, the mixture's bulk density increased but specific gravity decreased. Maximum dry density rose as RC rose, whereas water content fell. It was noted that BCR unquestionably increased as RC increased for all RC levels and all values of settlement ratios. The appropriate reinforcing layer thickness is suggested to be no more than 2B. As the RC concentration in the sand and R d increased, the difference between two pressure-settlement curves of densities 83% and 97% significantly decreased. Furthermore, when RC reaches 50%, two curves are roughly comparable. At RC = 50%, it is advised that the relative density of 83% is sufficient to produce the same behavior as the relative density of 97%. It was found that as RC and R d grew, the tested mixtures' ultimate bearing capacity and elasticity modulus increased as well. A novel proposed formulas are developed to compute bearing capacity ratio, ultimate bearing capacity, and elasticity modulus of the tested mixtures taking into account the influence of RC, reinforcement layer depth, settlement ratio, and the relative density, and its results agree with the experimental results.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135095486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But like normal concrete, SCC has a brittle character (weak in tension) that causes sudden collapse with no advance notification. The tensile capacity of SCC has increased owing to the addition of steel fiber (SF). Various research concentrates on increasing the tensile strength (TS) of SCC by incorporating SF. To collect information on past research, present research developments, and future research directions on SF-reinforced SCC, however, a detailed review of the study is necessary. The main aspects of this review are the general introduction of SCC, fresh properties namely slump flow, slump T50, L box, and V funnel, and strength properties such as compressive, tensile, flexure, and elastic modulus. Furthermore, failure modes of steel fiber-reinforced SCC are also reviewed. Results suggest that the SF decreased the filling and passing ability. Furthermore, improvement in strength properties was also observed. However, some studies reported that SF had no effect or even decreased compressive capacity. Additionally, SF improved the tensile capacity of SCC and avoid undesirable brittle failure. Finally, the review recommends the substitution of secondary cementitious materials in SF-reinforced SCC to improve its compressive capacity.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134947614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These wastes, on the other hand, are affordable and readily accessible, making them ideal for commercial use while also contributing to the reduction of environmental degradation. Wheat straw ash (WTSA) is a kind of agricultural waste that has the potential to be utilized in concrete. Although many researchers are focused on utilization of WTSA in concrete. However, an updated review is required which provides easy access for the reader to get an idea about the benefits of WTSA in concrete. Therefore, this study provides a comprehensive review of the utilization of WTSA as a concrete ingredient. Physical and chemical compositions of WTSA, flowability, mechanical strength (compressive, flexure, tensile strength, and elastic modulus), and durability properties (permeability, carbonation, ultrasonic pulse velocity, alkali-silica reaction and chloride attacks) are the main aspects of this review. Results indicate that the performance of concrete improved with partial substitutions of cement with WTSA but simultaneously decreased the flowability of concrete. The optimum dose is important as higher dose results in decreased mechanical strength. The typical optimum dose ranges from 10 to 20% by weight of the binder. The performance of concrete in terms of durability was also improved but less research is carried out on the durability performance of concrete with WTSA. Additionally, despite WTSA's improvement in mechanical strength, concrete still exhibits lower tensile strain, which leads to brittle failure. Therefore, it was recommended that further study should be done to increase its tensile strength.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135791284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article presents studies of the influence of a polymer additive structured by carbon nanomaterials on physical and mechanical characteristics of plain cement concrete mixtures. IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry have shown that the use of carbon nanomaterials significantly altered the structure of plain cement concrete mixtures. As a result of the fact that the high-strength nanomaterial is the center of crystallization of cement rock newly formed structures, a denser reinforced microstructure is formed, which significantly increases the strength properties of plain cement concrete mixtures. The inclusion of a polymer complex additive in plain cement concrete mixtures leads to higher and longer plasticizing, which plays an important role in the production of monolithic products. It was determined that, in the presence of a complex modifier (polymer additive structured by carbon nanotubes), the crystalline structure of calcium hydrosilicates is compacted, which causes high physical and mechanical characteristics of modified plain cement concrete mixtures. It has been experimentally shown that the additive Ethacryl HF (France) from the class of polycarboxylates, chosen for research, acts as an accelerator for setting and curing cement paste, and also increases its strength characteristics. In general, in this study, there is a water-reducing effect from the application of the additive for all plain cement concrete mixtures. Water requirements are reduced by 5 mas. %, while the strength is increased by 19%. The formulation of plain cement concrete mixtures modified by polymer additives, structured by carbon nanotubes, with high performance were developed.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135110868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, two types of concrete mixtures were made: normal concrete (NC) and sawdust concrete (SDC), which was made by substituting 15% of the volume of sand with SD. Five RC beams (100 mm in depth, 200 mm in width, and 1500 mm in length) were experimentally tested for flexural behavior under four-point loading. Three strengthening schemes were used in this study. The first scheme used a wooden plate that was only fixed by an adhesive layer. The second and third schemes were applied by a wooden plate, which was fixed by an adhesive layer and steel angles (two and eleven angles). The findings of the study indicate that although the concrete's workability, compressive, and splitting tensile strengths were reduced with the addition of SD, the ultimate load of the beam with SD was lower than that of the control beam, with a slight variation of approximately 4%. Moreover, strengthening the RC beam with a wooden plate and two steel angles yielded the highest load capacity among all tested beams, 20% higher than the control specimen. The study's findings offered useful information for developing eco-friendly sawdust concrete beams with efficient strengthening techniques for potential future uses.","PeriodicalId":13832,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135824871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
