This study investigates Saudi students’ attitudes towards the use of four Social Media (SM) applications for learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL): Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Ninety-nine adult students participated in this mixed-methods study, which included surveys and interviews to examine their perception of SM as pedagogical tools. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVAs) revealed that there are differences between beginner and advanced students in their perceptions of the usefulness of SM applications for language learning, but not in their affective feelings towards SM for use outside the classroom, nor their choice of SM application for learning. In addition, groups’ choices of SM varied according to language purposes and skills to be learned. Further qualitative analysis revealed that advanced learners are reluctant to use SM for academic purposes, considering them to be their own social (not educational) spaces.","PeriodicalId":138095,"journal":{"name":"Future-proof CALL: language learning as exploration and encounters – short papers from EUROCALL 2018","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133518413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The errors occurred in both authentic English as a Second Language (ESL) compositions and simple sentences we generated ourselves. We verified the performance in terms of (1) coverage (rates of error detection), (2) accuracy of proposed replacement forms, and (3) ‘false alarms’ (forms mistakenly flagged as incorrect). To the extent GCs provide accurate and comprehensive corrective feedback, they could relieve teachers of the time-consuming task of providing written feedback themselves. While inaccurate replacement forms and false alarms are relatively rare, we found GCs to have poor overall coverage (total error detection rates under 50%). Grammarly and Virtual Writing Tutor, however, outperform Microsoft Word. Coverage is also higher both for certain categories of error and for the sentences rather than the authentic compositions. Finally, although GCs do not provide comprehensive feedback, we suggest designing special activities that target select error types.","PeriodicalId":138095,"journal":{"name":"Future-proof CALL: language learning as exploration and encounters – short papers from EUROCALL 2018","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116301575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students were divided into two groups: those who were provided with the new, cross-platform application for vocabulary learning, and those with the older, PC-based Web-Based Training (WBT) system. The learning contents, learning processes, and the course evaluation systems were almost identical between these two groups. The log data of approximately 850 students over a year was extracted, and the online learning behaviour was statistically compared between the two groups. The comparison results can be summarised as (1) the total learning duration, the outcome, and learning efficiency are almost equivalent across the groups, and (2) the students with the new application exhibited a relatively significant tendency of frequent, steady, and periodical logins than those with the old one. The analyses suggested that the cross-platform, mobile-optimised web application elicited the students’ ability to regulate their everyday self-accessed online learning.","PeriodicalId":138095,"journal":{"name":"Future-proof CALL: language learning as exploration and encounters – short papers from EUROCALL 2018","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121460323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project tackles a major challenge of bringing together interdisciplinary researchers to foster language learning of all European citizens from diverse socio-demographic, cultural, educational and linguistic backgrounds. It aims at unlocking a crowdsourcing potential available for all languages, including less widely spoken languages, in order to create language resources and achieve a coverage of material for teaching the languages. It will meet its research and capacity-building goals by creating an international community of researchers that will work on producing a comprehensive theoretical framework and running prototypical experiments to benefit a wide range of users and languages, while considering ethical, legal and business issues. This article informs about its objectives, expected impact and strategic organisation that contribute to reaching its flexible and sustainable success goals.","PeriodicalId":138095,"journal":{"name":"Future-proof CALL: language learning as exploration and encounters – short papers from EUROCALL 2018","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127682781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
