One of the species was a yet undescribed member of the genus Indopacifica, collected in algae growing on roots of green button mangrove Conocarpus erectus. Here, we provide a description of Indopacifica impedimenta sp. n, including its juvenile stages, and discuss its distribution and differences from congenerics. The second species collected was Fortuynia elamellata, which was found in algae growing on intertidal rocks. Here, we provide supplementary morphological data on adult and juvenile stages and discuss their distribution and ecology. The third species found was Sellnickia caudata, collected from the same mangrove as Indopacifica impedimenta n. sp. However, S. caudata occurred only on leaves and twigs of the mangrove plants, which are not regularly flooded. We provide supplementary morphological data and SEM images of adults and a description of juvenile stages for this species. We also discuss the family placement of Sellnickia and provide barcode sequences for all species studied herein. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:8D74FD5A-27EE-48A9-8780-C1E6B1115629","PeriodicalId":13803,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Acarology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139265031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the environmental risks associated with synthetic pesticides have necessitated the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives. Plant-based biopesticides utilizing secondary metabolites have emerged as promising strategies for pest management. This study aimed to extract and characterize Mentha spicata L. through biochemical analyses, GC-MS, and LC-QTOF-MS. The extract’s acaricidal, oviposition deterrence, and repellent properties were evaluated against Tetranychus urticae, revealing a pronounced time- and concentration-dependent effect over 96 hours, with an LC50 of 3 µg/mL. Furthermore, the impact of the extract on plant growth was assessed using tomato plants, demonstrating an enhancement in growth rate based on photosynthesis, weight, and oxidative stress markers analyses. Polyphenolics and terpenoids in M. spicata were identified as contributors to its biological activities, including antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties. Molecular docking experiments targeting acetylcholine esterase (AChE) were conducted on the identified phytocompounds, indicating a high affinity for δ-3-Carene and Isoferuloyl C1 glucuronide. The pesticidal effects of these compounds were attributed to their competitive and synergistic inhibition of AChE. These findings highlight the potential of plant extracts, specifically M. spicata, as effective biopesticides in future pest control strategies. The utilization of secondary metabolites from plant sources offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to combatting T. urticae infestations.KEYWORDS: Two-spotted spider miteacaricidalbiopesticideplant-based alternativessustainable pest controlMolecular dockingeco-friendly alternatives AcknowledgmentsThe authors thank the infrastructure of EGE-MATAL (Ege University, Izmir, Turkey) for their help in performing the GC-MS and LC-QTOF-MS analysis.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Data availability statementData are made available as supplementary material attached to this manuscript. Paeonol is the main component isolated from peony roots and exhibits various medicinal values. In our previous study, we found that paeonol shows strong acaricidal activity. In the present study, the acaricidal mechanism of paeonol against A. ovatus was uncovered through RNA-seq transcriptomics and TMT proteomics. According to the transcriptomics results, paeonol treatment noticeably up-/downregulated genes associated with “oxidoreductase activity” (peptidase activity, ATPase activity, and hydrolase activity). As shown by proteomic analysis, concordant changes were identified in proteins linked with hydrolase activity, serine-type peptidase activity, antioxidant activity, and oxidoreductase activity. Paeonol target proteins were FMO, ACAD8, GPX, CTSL, and PRSS1, as determined by transcriptomics-proteomics correlation analysis. We propose that paeonol may play an acaricidal role by interfering with enzyme activities in A. ovatus, especially serine-type peptidase, thereby causing an imbalance in amino acid ratios and eventually leading to the death of A. ovatus. However, the specific mechanism of action needs to be further studied. In addition, we verified the key enzymes at the transcriptional level.","PeriodicalId":13803,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Acarology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135411507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dried and pulverized botanical was subjected to sequential extraction using three solvents viz., hexane, chloroform and water in the increasing order of polarity. Solvent fractions were evaluated for their ovicidal and adulticidal activities against T. truncatus in the laboratory at five different concentrations viz., 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 %. Results indicated that only hexane fraction at higher concentrations of 0.15 and 2.0 % exhibited significant ovicidal action, causing 100.00 and 81.33 per cent egg mortality, respectively. However, all the fractions recorded significant adulticidal effect at higher concentrations with hexane fractions at 0.2 and 0.15 % recording significantly higher adult mortality (>90 %), followed by chloroform fraction. The best concentrations of the three solvent fractions identified in the laboratory study were evaluated against T. truncatus on amaranthus, in a pot culture experiment. Fourteen days post treatment, hexane fraction at 0.2 % reduced mite population by 88.78 per cent and was superior to neem oil emulsion at 2% (76.44 % reduction), which was on par with chloroform and aqueous fractions. Results of the study identified Mexican marigold as a potential candidate in mite pest management, which may be further validated through multi-locational field trials.","PeriodicalId":13803,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Acarology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46579845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, water mites were sampled from the hyporheic zone of the upper Neretva river catchment in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In total, 10 obligate subterranean (hyporheobiontic) species were detected. Seven of them, i.e. Atractidespumilus (Szalay, 1946), Frontipodopsis reticulatifrons Szalay, 1945, Lethaxona pygmaea K. Viets, 1932, Paraxonopsis inferorum (Motaş and Tanasachi, 1947), P. vietsi (Motaş and Tanasachi, 1947), Erebaxonopsis brevipes Motaş and Tanasachi, 1947, and one halacarid species, Parasoldanellonyx typhlops K. Viets, 1933, were recorded for the first time for the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first DNA barcoding data are provided for three families (Frontipodopsidae, Lethaxonidae, and Hungarohydracaridae), one subfamily (Stygomomoniinae), and 10 species, providing the first basis for a DNA barcode reference library of water mites from the interstitial habitats in South-Eastern Europe. In each of the four species, considered to have a wide Western Palaearctic distribution, i.e., A. pumilus, F. reticulatifrons, Hungarohydracarus subterraneaus, and Stygomomonia latipes, two separate lineages were distinguished. Fossil-calibrated modelling revealed that the diversification and speciation processes within the above-mentioned species started in the Late Miocene (7.3–11.8 Ma).KEYWORDS: Water mitesDNA-barcodinghyporheic zoneBalkanshyporheobiontic species AcknowledgmentsSpecial thanks to Harry Smit (Alkmaar) whose constructive comments greatly improved this paper. Its control is difficult because it has developed resistance to some synthetic pesticides. GC-mite is a novel botanical pesticide based on cottonseed, clove, and garlic oils that has shown the potential to control tetranychid mites. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal concentrations of GC-mite on the life history and biochemical parameters of P. citri. Age-stage life table procedure was used to evaluate the effects of two sublethal concentrations (LC20 = 59.40 μg ml−1 and LC30 = 78.66 μg ml−1) of GC-mite on the development, longevity, and reproduction of P. citri. The biochemical analysis included the content of lipids, carbohydrates and glycogen, esterase, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities. The developmental time of treated mites with LC30 was significantly longer than the control but the adult longevity and oviposition days of P. citri treated with both sublethal concentrations decreased. The total fecundity of treated mites decreased with increasing GC-mite concentration applied. The life table analysis showed that sublethal concentrations of GC-mite significantly affected gross reproductive rate (GRR), net reproductive rate (R 0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and mean generation time (T). The estimated values of r were significantly lower than the control in LC20 (0.130 day−1) and LC30 (0.117 day−1). The lipids, carbohydrates and glycogen contents as well as esterase and GST activities were significantly lower in mites treated with LC30 concentration, but no significant effect was found in mites treated with LC20 and control. These results suggest that sublethal concentrations of GC-mite had significant effects on both demographic and biochemical parameters of P. citri.","PeriodicalId":13803,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Acarology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44780604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
