The broadband TWEAM module showed 3-dB bandwidth of 40 GHz, -10 dB electrical return loss, S11 of up to 34 GHz and optical power sensitivity of -20 dBm at BER of 10/sup -12/ in 40 Gbit/s back to back transmission. For the narrowband TWEAM module, we observed minimum electrical S11 of -34.6 dB and enhanced electrical to optical (E/O) response at 40 GHz. An overview is given on the materials development utilizing the floating zone crystal growth facilities at Penn State including the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) technique and the optic image furnace, with focus on applications utilizing ferroelectric single crystal materials. Materials development, particularly the ferroelectric oxygen octahedral structural families (perovskites and tungsten bronzes) are emphasized. We report the optical generation of 10 GHz microwave signals with phase-noise close to the carrier that is > 40 dB better than achieved with state-of-the-art microwave sources and high quality microwave synthesizers. The method uses stable lasers locked to optical resonators that have extremely high Q's and the frequency can be steered in the longer term to atomic resonances.
