A base station equipped with multiple antennas sends three types of information to several users who are also equipped with multiple antennas. The individual information to each user is conveyed in the form of receive SM as well as through conventional QAM modulation. On top of that, common transmit SM information is conveyed to all users. To this end, specific preprocessing and postprocessing are obtained based upon the singular value decomposition technique. A simple additional processing based on phase shifts is proposed to improve detectability. Computer simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme has improved average bit-error rate (BER) over a reference scheme under the same spectral efficiency.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127200207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such data are particularly interesting to better understand the way mobile users communicate, move and consummate services, but also to rethink the design or the evolution of current infrastructures with respects to new information and communication technologies and continuous increase of mobile usage. In this paper, we analyze a mobile dataset from a telecommunication provider in the city of Milan, Italy, and characterize mobile users' behavior. We show that, on the scale of the city, the number of short distance calls is massively higher than the number of long distance calls. Based on these observations, we propose a realistic yet simple model to describe the distance distribution of the calls in such a metropolitan environment. Finally, we focus on a specific area of the city, the soccer stadium area, and show that local events provoke regular deviation to the observed behaviors on the scale of the city. The macroscopic model we propose can be used to generate mobile datasets for any large city and thus support further simulations.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127502249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For simplicity, Long-Term Evolution (LTE) systems consider a single MCS format per codeword, which is optimized according to the average frequency response over the user's allocated bandwidth. When the channel coherence bandwidth is smaller than the user bandwidth, the constituent codeblocks experience significantly different channel responses, thus rendering link adaptation less effective. This paper proposes a frequency-dependent link adaptation mechanism whereby codeblocks are independently assigned different MCS values that can be fine-tuned to the frequency characteristics of the channel. Post-detection SINR values at the receive side are exploited (instead of CQI values), along with horizontal mapping of resources with two variants: direct mapping and diversity mapping. A suitable in-band signaling scheme for the codeblock sizes and modulations is also described. Link-level simulations show moderate increases in median throughput, but significant improvements in instantaneous throughput, for a broad range of SINR conditions. The proposed scheme can be particularly beneficial when very large signal bandwidths are used as foreseen in future 5G cellular systems.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124909120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the disaster strikes, most of the victims would gather at the evacuation sites for food supplies and other necessities. Having a good communication network is very important to help the victims. In this paper, we aim at recovering the network from the still-alive mobile base stations to the out-of-service evacuation sites by using multi-hop relaying technique. We propose to reconstruct the post-disaster network in a capacity-aware way based on prize collecting Steiner tree. The purpose of the proposed scheme is to achieve high capacity connectivity ratio in a cost efficient way. To provide more accurate evaluation results, we evaluate the proposed scheme by using the real evacuation site and base station data in Tokyo area, and utilizing the big data analysis based post-disaster service availability model.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126061880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The request for higher efficiency, both in bandwidth use and power consumption, increases the need for limit-achieving, flexible techniques of channel coding. Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) Codes are very interesting because of their high performances and potential flexibility introduced by puncturing. In this paper, the design of rate-compatible LDPC is addressed. A class of punctured LDPC codes is defined through their equivalent parity check matrices. A formal analysis is provided, based on a simplified approach on the decoding belief propagation algorithm, i.e., considering a Gaussian approximation for message densities under density evolution. A suitable design criterion for the puncturing patterns is then addressed.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"511 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123428527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Motivated, in this paper, we aim at realizing secure communications for two-user MIMO interference channel with SWIPT. Unfortunately, the formulated secrecy rate maximization problem is non-convex with respect to the covariance matrices of two transmitters, thus an alternative algorithm is proposed to solve the nonconvex optimization problem. Firstly, the orthogonal-projection-based optimization algorithm is performed to completely suppress the interference to ID receiver, then by applying the Taylor series expansion, the covariance matrix of information transmitter is optimized based on the dual optimization. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to validate the security performance of the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125355499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, Tunable Sparse Network Coding (TSNC) is a promising concept, which leverages a trade-off between computational complexity and goodput. An optimal density tuning function has not been found yet, due to the lack of a closed-form expression that links density, performance and computational cost. In addition, it would be difficult to implement, due to the feedback delay. In this work we propose two novel tuning functions with a lower computational cost, which do not highly increase the overhead in terms of the transmission of linear dependent packets compared with RLNC and previous proposals. Furthermore, we also broaden previous studies of TSNC techniques, by means of an extensive simulation campaign carried out using the ns-3 simulator. This brings the possibility of assessing their performance over more realistic scenarios, e.g considering MAC effects and delays. We exploit this implementation to analyze the impact of the feedback sent by the decoder. The results, compared to RLNC, show a reduction of 3.5 times in the number of operations without jeopardizing the network performance, in terms of goodput, even when we consider the delay effect on the feedback sent by the decoder.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125393336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A block of source samples is decomposed into N layers, so-called layered source coder. Each layer is transmitted over its own fading subchannel. The end-to-end mean square error (MSE) distortion, including distortion caused by the quantization process, the lossy compression, and channel errors, is adopted as the performance metric. We derive a power allocation strategy across the layers to minimize the end-to-end MSE distortion. The proposed transmission scheme gives higher robustness over the entropy-constrained source-channel coding scheme. In addition, the proposed transmission scheme requires much lower transmission power for a given source signal to noise ratio (SNRs) than the entropy-constrained scheme in the case of bandwidth compression. This power saving is meaningful for wireless communications with battery-operated devices.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126637584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The base station exploits hybrid precoding and communicates with multiple users simultaneously via spatial multiplexing. The system performance degrades when the spatially multiplexed users are angularly close and thus results in residual interference which is hard to be cancelled out by the hybrid precoding. To obtain an efficient and computably tractable solution, a novel formulation of the user selection problem and the associated algorithm is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm enables an optimal spatial multiplexing at the base station, where a predefined number of users is selected and simultaneously served to maximise the averaged spectral efficiency per user. Simulation results show that implementing the multiuser hybrid precoding with the proposed user selection algorithm achieves a performance close to the interference-free limit.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115565120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using Time of Arrival (TOA) on Ultra-wideband (UWB) signal is able to provide fine localization accuracy if NLoS-biased anchor nodes can be identified. In this paper, an antenna cluster selection scheme is proposed to identify the NLoS-biased node, therefore improve the localization accuracy and provide location-aware communication service. In particular, the area of interest with NLoS human body blockage is divided into multiple convex hull based effective localization areas (ELAs). Four antennas, from a distributed antenna system, are deployed in each ELA, where the most severely NLoS-biased antenna is identified and discarded, two other antennas are selected to execute a 2-dimension (2D) indoor localization. The remaining antenna uses this location information to provide location-aware communication service. Performance is evaluated using a channel sounder's measurement data and a simulator, benchmarked to the traditional parametric identification method.","PeriodicalId":137845,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116005744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
