This paper is discussed about the result of metallurgraphy and transmission electron microscope (TEM) that has been undertaken in Advance Material Research Center (AMREC), SIRIM. This is done to determine differences factors that influence the conductivity value between pure aluminum and. Al alloys grade 6101 that have been improved by their strength. By applying both tests, it will provide us information about the behavior of material used as cable. Because of higher resistance value of Al alloy compared to pure Al, extra changes needed to ensure higher conductivity value achieve thus increase the power transmitted in the conductor.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The limiting factor in power system operation is the damping of oscillations. The damping torque provided by the FACTS device is proportional to the gain of the controller. A power system is highly nonlinear dynamical system, having always some influence on the controller performance. An inappropriate controller setting may cause interplay between controllers dispersed system wide, leading to evolution of nonlinear dynamic phenomena such as bifurcation. It is induced by variation in control gains and system parameters. For satisfactory system operation, appropriateness of each setting of the controller needs to be evaluated for a specific operating configuration. The in-depth evaluation of a controller setting leading to fine tuning of the controller gain is feasible through bifurcation analysis.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Any software that apply the CBD will not only save time and cost through reusability of component, but also have the capability to handle the complex problems. Since CBD design is based on object-oriented programming (OOP), the components with a good quality and reusability can be created, classified and managed for future reuse. The methodology of OOP is based on the real object. The mechanism of OOP such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism are the advantages that could be used to define real objects associated with the program. This paper focused on the implementation of the CBD to power system transient stability simulation (TSS). There are many methods to solve transient stability problem, but in this paper two methods are applied to solve TSS problems, namely trapezoidal method and modified Euler method. The performance of two approaches, CBD and non CBD applications of power system transient stability simulation is assessed through tests carried out using IEEE data test systems.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Simulation of the proposed case was carried out to ascertain whether the acceleration and deceleration time of the blower and the thermal and mechanical stresses in the system were within the permissible limits. Simulation helped in taking into account the potential problems. In the system possibly arising due to the stress generated and thus helped in developing a proper solution. It also indicated that the success of the project largely depended on the application engineering aspects showing the cruciality of the approach undertaken.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This can be achieved by applying a current to the structure to be protected from electrical source. When enough current is applied, the whole structure will be at one potential, thus anode and cathode sites will not exists. CPS is commonly used on many types of structures such as pipelines, underground storage tanks, locks and ship hulls. The main objective of this work is to discuss and compares the two methods of applying cathodic protections by using an impressed current system and sacrificial anode. The physical models were also developed for the two methods. The importance of controlling the protective current in the system is presented and discussed. Calculated and measurement results for the two methods have been presented in this paper. Measurement of output current were taken each week showed that there is a decrease in the required current according to time due to reduced of anode surface during the life of the system.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The artificial neural network (ANN) offers potential advantages regarding efficient computation and ease of knowledge acquisition. However it is a \"black box\" type approach, which lacks interpretability. The decision tree (DT) approach is known for its interpretability but comparatively less accurate. The proposed hybrid approach combines ANN and DT approaches to exploit their potential while suppressing their drawbacks. It applies an ANN for security evaluation of power systems and DT methodology to drive preventive control measures. A divergence based feature selection algorithm has been investigated to select an optimal combination of neural training features. The method has been applied on an IEEE power system and the results obtained are promising.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. National Power Engineering Conference, 2003. To be able to detect existence of sag and identify its cause for determining mitigation options, it is necessary to monitor the system online, to determine the probable origin of the event leading to the voltage sag. It is usual to have power quality related events, more specifically a sag or swell, surfacing at the distribution level due to a fault at the transmission level. However, it may not be possible to provide measurement facilities at each of the buses and lines in a power network, both at the transmission and distribution levels. Based on the measurements available at a single point on a distribution network, the paper suggests a procedure for identifying the location of a single line to earth fault on either the transmission or the distribution portion of the network.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The specific case study has been conducted at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTM building where nonlinear loads such as computers and fluorescent lamps which produce the harmonics are connected. Measurements are conducted at each subswitch board (SSB), main-switch board (MSB) and substation of the faculty. The selected networks are modelled and simulated using SKM-Power Tools for Windows software. The results from the measurement are compared with the simulation result, and it is found that there are quite close to each other. Recent worldwide studies have raised questions about the possible health effects from power frequency EMFs. Information of such studies and websites of concerned groups are readily available from the Internet. These have contributed to the growth of public concerns on their possible health effects. To date, there are still many questions that heed to be answered to determine their hazards to human and the setting of limits to EMF exposures from long term, low dose power frequency electric and magnetic fields. There is, however a general agreement that better information and sincere applied research are needed in order to resolve these issues. This paper describes the activities of the EMF Research Group, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, the university owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the major power utility company in Malaysia. EMF Research Group conducts systematic measurements of transmission and distribution facilities owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad using three-axis EMDEX H meters. The results of the measurements were presented in linear magnitude versus distance graph, 3-dimensional graphs and contour plots for easy reference. Models of the facilities measured are constructed using related software packages and magnetic fields at various operating conditions are predicted. The EMF Research Group also assists Tenaga Nasional Berhad and its subsidiaries in addressing public concerns voiced through the mass media or letters sent directly to the company. Besides addressing health issues, this paper also discusses complains from other industrial and commercial facilities whose operations were affected due to high EMFs. The paper describes the measurements conducted and remedial actions recommended.","PeriodicalId":136640,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. National Power Engineering Conference, 2003.
