It is now possible to bring energy from power sources thousands of miles from a load center. This challenge of ingenuity has kindled an interest in these huge transmission projects and has focused attention on engineering design that goes into transmission lines in general. This paper deals with the knowledge and experience that form the basis for the design methods developed and used by the Southern California Edison Company for transmission tower foundations. Particular attention is given to the concrete belled cylindrical pile which, because of its economic advantage over other footing types, makes up the bulk of the tower foundations now being constructed. Also treated are several areas of design and construction for which a better understanding of the soil-structure interaction appears to offer some potential for the development of more economical tower foundation designs.","PeriodicalId":136288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Power Division","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1966-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131515103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight-four foreign pumped storage developments are either built or being built as of 1912, and new and larger developments are being planned. Because studies of most new hydroelectric projects include consideration of pumped storage installations, hydroelectric engineers have an interest in the principles and practice that characterize the extensive pumped storage developments abroad. A listing of the possible purposes of pumped storage projects is given. The geographical areas in which pumped storage developments have been realized are given. The effect of geography and power economics on pumped storage developments is examined. A general description of the various equipment used in pumped storage developments is presented, and prevailing ranges of unit capacity and hydraulic heads are given. A complete listing and tabulation of all major foreign pumped storage developments is included. The discussion of foreign pumped storage practice covers the folowing subjects: integration with power systems; plant efficiency and capital cost; pumping heads; upper and lower reservoir structures; powerhouse structures; water conduits; and pumped storage cascade developments. A series of conclusions attempts to relate present and future foreign pumped storage developments to the expanding interconnected power generation systems that are basic to the pumped storage concept.","PeriodicalId":136288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Power Division","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1964-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123845092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concrete external shell wall of the cylindrical vapor container is designed to resist internal pressure and thermal gradients and to serve as a biological shield. A metal liner is provided for gaseous containment instead of a steel container and a separate concrete biological shield wall. A steel plate dome acts to resist the internal pressure, provides gaseous containment and serves as the interior form for the biological concrete shielding. The service building contains special purpose areas not required for fossil fuel steam plants. Throughout the plant, special protective finishes are required in areas subjected to high level activity where liquids are in contact with the surface and in areas subjected to spillage of liquids containing radioactive products. Finishes used include metal liners, plastic coatings, vinyl sheets and special paints, some of which require special surface preparation and application procedures.","PeriodicalId":136288,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Power Division","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1963-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132346755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
