The optimal frequency of the dc-dc converter is defined by making its frequency-dependent loss equal to its frequency-independent loss. The maximum efficiency of the dc-dc converter operating at 4 kHz is measured at 98.1% during battery charging and at 98.2% during battery discharging. The converter maintains a high efficiency of more than 97% in a wide range of power transfer.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125203236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classical PI control is integrated with fuzzy logic controller to make a hybrid control system with merits of both. For the proposed architecture of hybrid system, the fuzzy logic controller works in the specific range of operation, presents a fast response in settlement to steady state with minimum oscillations and without the necessity of switching between two controllers. Using small rule base fuzzy with in specific range reduces the computational burden dramatically and thus paves the way for its implementation on low cost microcontroller, hence making it suitable for industrial application under severe non linearities. The proposed control is simulated for speed control of brushless DC motor under MATLAB/Simulink environment.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122507918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are various price based schemes to implement DR and flatten the load profile. Hence, for the benefit of customers, proper load scheduling is required to lower the usage of electricity during peak load periods in order to decrease the electricity cost. This work formulates load scheduling as multi stage decision making problem or Markov Decision Problem (MDP). Reinforcement learning (RL) has been used to solve many decision making problems under stochastic environment. ε-Greedy algorithm is the most popular exploration method used in RL. In this paper, pursuit algorithm is developed to achieve a balance between exploration and exploitation process of the RL. The performance of both the algorithms is compared which shows the supremacy of Pursuit Algorithm over ε-greedy algorithm.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132660354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main target is to achieve a bushing design which has a good electric field stress control. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) axial-symmetrical model geometries of high voltage capacitor and surge arrester bushings have been developed using finite element analysis (FEA) method, which is COMSOL Multiphysics software. These models have been used to obtain the electric field distribution in capacitor and surge arrester bushing models. The effects of the bushing permittivity and electrical conductivity, the width and length and the metallic interface on the electric field distribution in bushing structure were analysed. From this study, an understanding of electric field distribution in bushing geometry may be attained, which may help in designing high voltage bushing stress control.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133341406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The said insulations degraded as transformers performed their work, while the most critical component of the transformer insulation system is the paper insulation. It is not easily replaced as compared to oil where it is easily reconditioned in-order to remove water and contaminants. Studies on paper insulation showed that temperature, oxygen and moisture contents contributed to its degradation. Moisture and Furan were produced from these deterioration processes. The paper is focused on the effect of oxygen and moisture contents to deterioration rate of Kraft paper insulation and end-of-life analysis using 2 Furaldehyde (2FAL). Level of temperature, oxygen, moisture contents and 2FAL were obtained from in-service distribution power transformers. Assessments were then carried out on these collected data to determine the effect of oxygen and moisture contents to 2FAL formation. Categorizations were then carried out on 2FAL data for end-of-life analysis using Weibull as a life data analysis. This study shows that moisture give more implication to paper insulation degradation rate compared to oxygen and the end-of-life in years derived from Weibull probability function can be used to estimate the life of paper insulation.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132127805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This inverter is designed for variable inductive loads and low output power applications. We proposed a novel simple PWM method which enables the inverter to keep the output current at six times more than the rated output current, without reducing output voltage value. In addition, based on a simple use of resonance in the circuit, the new inverter can raise the output voltage to extremely high amplitude for a relatively short time. These characteristics make the proposed inverter is useful for some industrial applications such as electrical vehicle. The new configuration of the circuit consists of a unidirectional switch, two inductors (to transfer energy), a fast diode and a capacitor. With very few elements, this system changes the input DC voltage to a desired sinusoidal AC voltage. Some advantages of this system are: number of power electronics devices is low - it only uses a simple switch; it does not need dead time, in spite of conventional inverters which need a dead time between switches to prevent from short-circuiting; volume of the circuit is very small; the total harmonic distortion (THD) is greatly reduced; and it works with high efficiency. Another advantage of this inverter is capability of the circuit in boosting or bucking the input voltage to a desirable output voltage without using any DC-DC converters. It is flexible in keeping output voltage constant when the output current is increased, and it can produce the extremely higher output voltage than input voltage. The main drawback of the method, compared with conventional voltage source inverters, is that it uses more energy storage elements in spite of its low volume of power. We used simulations to prove all these statements.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115667104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective is to reduce the real power losses and improve the bus voltage profile in the system while satisfying all the distribution constraints. A method based on PSO algorithm to determine the minimum configuration is presented and their impact on the network real power losses and voltage profiles are investigated. Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models can be used but they provide wind forecast as a single value for a given time horizon. Therefore, forecasting wind speed as a deterministic value doesn't represent the uncertainty of the wind speed forecast. Ensemble NWP forecast can be used to calculate the probability of occurrence of different wind speeds classes. The main disadvantage of this approach is the extensive computational resources required to run multiple copies of the NWP model. This paper, explores the possibility of using pseudo ensemble method for generating probabilistic wind forecast for wind farm applications. The proposed method utilizes the spatial and temporal neighborhoods of the forecast point to generate forecast dataset and then calculate the required probabilities. A case study using the proposed method is tested and validated using wind data from NWP model and measurements from three ground weather stations in Oman.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114847530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, from modelling of PD, a better understanding of the phenomenon may be attained. PD activity within a void in a solid dielectric insulation material is influenced by many factors. One of the factors is the applied voltage. Different types of the applied voltage yield in different PD patterns and the condition for breakdown of insulation to occur. In this work, PD activity under various types of the applied voltages has been studied. A finite element analysis (FEA) software was used to simulate PD occurrence within a void in a dielectric material. The applied voltages that were considered are AC sinusoidal, damped AC and impulse voltages. PD patterns were observed through phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) patterns. The obtained result may improve an understanding on PD behaviour under different types of the applied voltage. It may also assist in insulation diagnostics and performance assessment of an insulation system.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117271868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moisture in paper insulation acts as a catalyst in transformer insulation aging. Experience has shown that humidity will affect electrical strength of paper and pressboard as well as other insulation system materials by reducing degree of polymerization and accelerated aging. Thus, it is essential to determine the extent of moisture content within insulation system before exciting the transformer and also during normal operation. In this regard, chemical tests on oil have been carried out for many years. Also, electrical tests for assessing the transformer condition have been developed and improved in recent years while most introduced methods aim to extract moisture from transformer insulation system. In this study, the results of practically applicable methods in oil sampling (KFT and capacitance sensors), paper sampling (Dean-Stark method) and also dielectric response (RVM, PDC, FDS) are examined in determining insulation system humidity. Test results through various methods are compared to analyze the sensitivity of different approaches. Crucial practical recommendations as well as advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. At last, to recommend an accurate and reliable method for practical implementations, practical tests have been performed simultaneously on three distribution transformers and the results of them are discussed.","PeriodicalId":135966,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129956082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
