Diffraction patterns of a laser beam diffracted from surface waves, induced by an external acoustic wave generator, provides information of the surface of fluids. This information, in turn, enables calculating an experimental dispersion relation and surface tension of fluids. Spherical and cylindrical surface waves on fluids are generated by sticking a long thin needle and a thin metal plate, respectively, to a loudspeaker. Turning on the generator, the needle (or metal plate) causes waves on the surface, which act as a diffraction grating to the incident laser beam. The experiment and analysis were performed for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. Distilled water was used as a Newtonian sample fluid, and polyacrylamide solution was used as a non-Newtonian one. Our results predict considerable differences between Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids behavior in terms of their surface wave dispersion.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116507896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This variant uses a spectrometer to acquire channelled spectra resulting from white light interferometry, which are then processed to yield the depth profiles for each transverse position. A spectrometer can be constructed using a dispersive medium such as a diffraction grating, focusing optics and a linear camera, which allows for a certain degree of control over the spectrometer parameters (exposure time, wavelength range and resolution). The recent advances in line camera technology also allow for fast camera readings, effectively increasing the frame rate of OCT B-scan images acquired and minimizing motion artifacts, which is especially important when imaging moving samples. In the presented work the usage of a commercial line camera (Basler Sprint spl-140km) employed in a Talbot bands based OCT system is reported. An analysis of how the configured parameters (exposure time, pixel binning, number of pixels read) affect the spectrometer’s resolution and the OCT sensitivity profile is also described.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126319450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensing chemistry is based on the acid-basic equilibrium of 4-nitrophenol, that is converted into the anionic form by addition quaternary ammonium hydroxide. The CO2 sensitive layer was characterized and tested by using simple absorbance/reflectance measurement setups where the sensor was connected to a fiber optic CCD spectrometer. A prototype simulating a real shallow raceway aquaculture system was developed and its hydraulic behavior characterized. A commercially available partial-pressure- NDIR sensor was used as a reference for dissolved CO2 tests with the new optical fiber sensor under development. Preliminary tests allowed verifying the suitability of the new optical sensor for accurately tracking the dissolved carbon dioxide concentration in a suitable operation range. Direct comparison of the new sensor and the reference sensor system allowed to demonstrate the suitability of the new technology but also to identify some fragilities there are presently being addressed.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126345968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They were characterized initially and along exposure time in what concerns to the refractive index, water content, transmittance in the ultraviolet-visible region and chemical structure. From the results presented in this work it was possible to observe that in all lens the refractive index increases till 21 days and the water content decreased. At the end of the exposure these parameters are more variable depending on the lens studied. In what concerns to the transmittance in the ultraviolet-visible region it can be concluded that after exposure all lenses present a higher transmittance than initially. From this work it was possible to conclude that there were no significant changes in the wavenumbers where the main functional groups vibrate and in the intensity of the respective bands after 5 weeks of exposure.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131491354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have constructed a state-of- the-art time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) apparatus for the observation of ultrafast demagnetization and precessional dynamics in ferromagnetic materials. Our system can operate well below the current ranges used by most researchers (typically in the region of 40 fs). Using current ultrafast optical methods of pulse compression, designed to obtain unprecedented temporal resolution, we have developed a dual-colour pump-probe technique: This enables us to attain an ultimate resolution in the 12 fs range, the spectral range being split between pump and probe beams. We have demonstrated that the system has the capacity for ultrafast demagnetization measurements using a GdFeCo thin film. Future developments will employ the full spectral range in both pump and probe branches to reach an expected temporal resolution in the vicinity of 6 fs, corresponding to few-cycle pulses.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131121784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resultant wavefront aberration function can be applied to evaluate the image quality on the retina, which includes the analysis of the higher-order aberrations. Among others, and due to their well-known mathematical properties for circular apertures, the wavefront aberration function is most commonly represented in terms of the Zernike polynomials. The main idea is to have a clinical reference of the objective performance of a set of normal human eyes. However, the high-order aberrations in normal human eyes are different for each person¸ that can be interpreted as that there are many possible solutions for the objective performance of emmetropic eyes. When dealing with the Zernike coefficients and excluding the spherical aberration, higher-order aberrations have a tendency to have a zero mean value. Different proposals have been suggested in the literature to deal with this feature. Moreover, it has been also shown that there is an ethnic dependency in the magnitude of the aberrations. We present in this work the objective performance of a set of uncorrected Mexican eyes, and compare them with other ethnic results published in the literature.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133624053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The film thickness, the refractive index and the absorption coefficient of the films were obtained by means of optical transmittance in the UV/VIS/NIR spectral region. In order to study the effect of the hydrogen doping on the optical properties of the layers, a constant hydrogen flux was used during the deposition process. The optical bandgap was calculated using different models of the fundamental absorption region. First, a good linear dependency in the Tauc-plot was observed from which the bandgap could be calculated. Second, the E04 iso-absorption optical gap was extracted. Finally, the Urbach rule was used to determine the Urbach energy and the Urbach focus of the films. In order to correlate the bandgap variation with further thermal annealing temperatures and the out diffusion of hydrogen, the vibrational properties of the different bonds were studied through FTIR measurements. Such spectra present the Si-H, the Si-CHn and Si-C bonds. Finally, the material exhibited an enhancement of the optical bandgap when doped with hydrogen. And moreover, a critical annealing temperature is found for which the bandgap reached its maximum value in both cases, doped and undoped samples.","PeriodicalId":135913,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Meeting of Optics and the Latin American Meeting of Optics, Lasers and Their Applications","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114536038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
