One of the main questions which Christian interpreters have, even if it is not articulated, concerns whether con temporary and New Testament glossolalia are one and the same. This paper does not answer this question directly, but it does enable the reader to be familiar with the New Testament side of the question. It does this by providing a detailed survey of the main views within New Testament scholarship. The present author is of the opinion that glossolalia within the narrative of Acts 2, and probably the remainder of Acts, is understood by Luke to be xenolalia. Following M. Turner and C. Forbes, it is argued that Paul in I Corinthians understood glossolalia in this way, but also with the additional category of ‘angelic language’.","PeriodicalId":134774,"journal":{"name":"Evangelical Quarterly: An International Review of Bible and Theology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125511218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article seeks to develop and influential discussion of this problem by R. E. Clements. In particular, it is argued that the expressions of hope in Isaiah, Amos and Hosea have not been added in an arbitrary fashion, but rather draw out the implications of taking the word of judgement seriously. The redactional and literary links between these passages and the bulk of the books in which they stand provide an important clue for both historical and theological interpretation.","PeriodicalId":134774,"journal":{"name":"Evangelical Quarterly: An International Review of Bible and Theology","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114907336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After outlining the contemporary fascination with the idea, and attempts made to describe it, a number of issues of description and debate are addressed. While revival may be a term used by historians to describe certain periods, the arguments for its biblical mandate and contemporary relevance are weak. However, such a conclusion must not make the individual or the church lax in seeking authentic Christian experience, and in proclaiming the gospel to each new generation.","PeriodicalId":134774,"journal":{"name":"Evangelical Quarterly: An International Review of Bible and Theology","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131055891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
