We used two datasets, from Moreira et al. (2021) and from Ferreira et al. (2022), both related to the sugarcane breeding program conducted at the Center for Sugar cane Research and Breeding at the Federal University of Viçosa, Oratórios, Minas Gerais. Both experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design. We constructed the selection indices via mixed models approach. We adopted a selection percentage of 18% of the top families for the selection process. In both studies, we considered as explanatory traits: the number of stalks, stalks diameter and stalk height, and as the response trait the tons of stalks per hectare per family. In the dataset from Ferreira et al. (2022), the support vector machine was a better approach to select sugarcane families by learning from the data after multivariate simulation. Whereas in the dataset from Moreira et al. (2021), using similar methodology, lower performance for support vector machines was obtained. Keywords: Synthetic data. Indirect selection. It is a crop that attracts a large number of pests, especially the carcass caterpillar, which can generate great qualitative and quantitative losses. Because it is mainly used in natura the application of agrochemicals to the control of these pests can cause risk to human health. Thus, the experiment was carried out with the objective of testing the efficiency of the use of biological insecticides in comparison to conventional chemical insecticides in the control of the military caterpillar. The biological insecticides Bio BB, Bio MB, Bio Bt Premium Akb, Agree and Bac-Control WP and the chemical insecticides Dimax 480 SC and Incrível, were applied in the maize crop at 3 different times at 28, 43 and 50 days after seeding. In all applications, the biological products proved to be as efficient in controlling the caterpillar carcass as the chemical insecticides. The products based on Beauveria bassiana and Metharrizium anisopliae showed greater efficiency in pest control proving that the biological insecticides are efficient in pest control in sweet corn contributing to a sustainable management of the crop.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":" 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116912869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was installed in randomized blocks with four replications, linear plots with six plants in a 3 x 2 m spacing. In this test, 21 progenies were selected in three replications, to evaluate the physical (basic density and shrinkage) and mechanical properties (shear, compression, modulus of elasticity and rupture) of the wood. There was no statistical difference between the progenies for the characteristics evaluated because it was juvenile wood. The basic density showed a positive correlation with the radial and volumetric shrinkage and a negative correlation with the shrinkage index. There is no correlation of DBH with the physical or mechanical properties of wood. The values obtained were low but with the potential to increase.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127727305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to determine the best combination, considering the same number of experimental units, it was concluded through a data simulation study that the quality of the fit increases when regression is performed in experiments with fewer treatments and more replications. Therefore, for model fitting, if linearity is expected, it is recommended to use two treatments. Otherwise, three treatments are recommended. All of this applies to experiments with coefficients of variation between 10% and 30%.Keywords: Treatments, Replications, Experimental precision.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122884975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study monitored agricultural production in the Brazilian Savanna, situated in the States of Tocantins (TO), Maranhão (MA), Bahia (BA), and Piauí (PI). The results showed that soybean occupies the largest area, corn and cotton show oscillations and coffee and sugar cane remain with values without major changes. In the production routes, the production areas present a positive correlation with k-apexes higher than 0.60 (p<0.05), indicating there is an increase in areas and no negative influence between the crops. The highest average erosivity rates were found respectively in the states of Tocantins and Maranhão. Conclude that the region MATOPIBA presents great potential for Brazilian agriculture requiring private and public actions to make sustainable use of the region through advanced technologies with conservation systems to avoid soil and water losses.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126158148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment took place in the municipality of Augusto Pestana, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The experimental design used was in randomized blocks, being evaluated the grain yield of 26 white oat genotypes in 20 complex environments. Greater phenotypic stability was observed for the URS 21 genotype, by the AMMI and GGE methodologies. The URS Corona genotype showed general adaptation, high genetic value and predictable environmental variations by the GGE method and reaction norm. Higher minimum air temperature and lower medium temperature and relative air humidity enhance the productive performance of white oat genotypes. The genotypes URS 22, Fapa Slava, IPR Afrodite and Estampa express positive responses to the covariates temperature medium, maximum, minimum and relative air humidity, respectively. Relative humidity explains more than 50% of the biological variation of white oat genotypes.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126285334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study set out to understand how different lighting conditions affect the germination and development of shiso seedlings of the purple and green varieties. Germination stabilization occurred 15 days after sowing (DAS), accounting for the environment with 70% shading 84 germinations of the purple variety and 34 germinations of the green variety. While, in the full sunshine treatment, germinations were much lower, however, the seedlings did not remain viable for monitoring the development of seedlings in full sunshine. After stabilization of germination, the following were evaluated: specific leaf area, diameter of the neck, height and number of leaves and but after 35 DAS there was a decrease in the production of biomass by both varieties.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131611662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intercropped cover crops increased soil organic carbon, reduced bulk density and relative field capacity, increased available water, saturated hydraulic conductivity, air capacity, ratio air capacity/total porosity, and total nitrogen of the surface layer of the tung-based agroforestry system at the end of the two growing seasons. The soil quality index of the surface layer changed from low to average in tung plots with cover crops and followed the order: Tung+Crambe/Sunflower/Soybean ≈ Tung+Oat/Vetch/Peanut > sole tung. Poultry manure enhanced further the physical quality status of the tung field. The unprotected tung soil (sole tung) of the tung-based agroforestry system is degrading, thus conservation strategies including those evaluated in this study are advocated for securing the growing environment of juveline tree crops as well as achieving their production potentials.","PeriodicalId":134365,"journal":{"name":"BRAZILIAN JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE - Revista de Agricultura","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126261038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
