In the biblical context, the symbolism of the river could be referred to the Church community, based on the image of the river flowing out of Jerusalem, described by the prophets Ezekiel and Zechariah. This article presents an attempt to develop the image of a river as a symbol of the Church based on contemporary geomorphological and theological knowledge and using allegorical method of interpretation adapted by the Church Fathers. The purity of spring waters can be a symbol of doctrinally and morally clean societies that are necessary in the formation of man’s spiritual life. The three-dimensional connectivity of natural river channels could be considered as a symbol of the three dimensions of the Church community: the family, the local community and the universal Church. The need to create communities that go beyond families and refer to the incipient Christian communities should now be emphasized. A multi-thread river is a proper symbol of the early Christian Church, because with the same doctrine of faith and common moral principles, the incipient local Churches differed, among others, in liturgical forms or organizational principles. Contemporary human activities degrading river ecosystems could be compared to destructive actions of a church community. Symbolically, restoration activities conducted in river channels could be considered as a symbol of the necessity to make efforts in the Church to return Christians to the original faith sources. Particular attention should be paid to the need of rebuilding the faith environment of the local Church.","PeriodicalId":134340,"journal":{"name":"Peregrinus Cracoviensis","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125294904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tradition of making such brief, impersonal, and often anonymous catalogues of places worth visiting dates from the 12th century. Such registers were prepared for people guiding pilgrims or even pilgrims themselves who travelled from Europe to the East. That is why, the literature tends to treat works of that type as “guidebooks”. Comparison of three medieval guidebooks i.e. Descriptio de locis sanctis by Rorgo Fretellus (ca. 1137), and two anonymous textes: Les sains pelerinages que l’en doit reqquerre el la Terre Sainte (ca. 1229–1239) and Peregrinationes totius Terrae Sanctae (1491) allows us to analyse changes of pilgrims’ needs and expectations. Creation and collapse of crusaders’ states, as well as development of Ayyubid and Mamluk empires changed political situation in the Holy Land and had a serious impact on pilgrimage movement. Forced modification of pilgrims’ routes took place during decades of important changes of piety of Latin Christians, so pilgrims needed updated guidebooks.","PeriodicalId":134340,"journal":{"name":"Peregrinus Cracoviensis","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128265977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After Poland gained independence, this religious association (formally counted as unrecognized) undertook missionary activity in the country, creating a network of about 90 parishes and covering approximately 40,000 faithful. The example of shop windows in Świętojańska Street in Gdynia\u0000\u0000The aim of the article was to find an answer to the question about the presence of the religious aspect of Christmas and Easter in the public space. The field studies carried out in December 2015 and March 2016 showed a small share of Christmas and Easter decorations in the main shopping and service street, which is Świętojańska Street in Gdynia. In the case of Christmas, only 41% of shop windows had any Christmas-themed decorations, and before Easter, the percentage was only 13%. In December, commercial and service outlets were most often decorated with light strings and Christmas trees, and in March with eggs of various sizes, colours, and patterns. In a group of over 250 open outlets in Świętojańska Street, ornaments directly related to the sacred sphere (a manger, angel, Easter Lamb, cross, the words “Hallelujah” or “Christmas”) were present in only a few of them. Therefore, the traditional Christmas and Easter holidays in Poland are moderately emphasized and present in the public space of the main street. The statements are justified that in the pre-Christmas period in Świętojańska Street, firstly, there is no seasonal sacralization of the street space, and secondly, that traditional Christmas decorations are moderately exposed and some of them evoke mixed feelings among the authors of the study as to their aesthetic role.","PeriodicalId":134340,"journal":{"name":"Peregrinus Cracoviensis","volume":"18 4-5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129458570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article is devoted to the role played by the Jasna Góra Sanctuary in achieving the sanctity of an individual and the entire Polish nation. Selected texts from the teachings of the third bishop of Częstochowa, Stefan Bareła, related to the worship of the Mother of God, were analysed. It manifests itself in various forms and on many levels of human existence, contributing to the development of the spiritual life of man. The Bishop teaches what is the worship of the Mother of God, thus contributing to the understanding of what Marian means in the life of a Christian, separating its theological aspects from pure piety. A proper understanding of the veneration and expression of the worship of the Mother of God strengthens the Christian’s faith. Its manifestation is the constant making of pilgrimages to Jasna Góra and the vows and commitments made in this place. An important element of the worship of the Mother of God is its influence on every Christian’s vocation to sanctity, discussed in the teachings of Bishop Stefan Bareła.","PeriodicalId":134340,"journal":{"name":"Peregrinus Cracoviensis","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114675340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
