The flying height was determined through the contact-start-stop (CSS) process by averaging the spacing over one disk revolution during steady-state flying. In the present work, the authors show why a different calibration of the CP is needed for flying height and spacing variation measurements, and they derive an expression that gives the calibration factor as a function of the relative length of the CP to the slider's length. They also explain why the CP measurement appears to give an erroneous dependence of spacing variation on flying height. >","PeriodicalId":133930,"journal":{"name":"1992. Digests of Intermag. Implementation issues involved in the design of a VLSI chip embodying the encoder, decoder, and Viterbi detector for the trellis-coded system are discussed. Vittoria","doi":"10.1109/INTMAG.1992.696632","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/INTMAG.1992.696632","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents a theoretical investigation of magnetostatic volume wave (MSVW) propagation in multilayered magnetic struchlre (YIGIGGGMGIGGG), in which the static magnetizations in the two YIG layers are not collinear. It is assumed that there exists an arbitrary angle between the two static magnetic magnetizations for a given applied field. Therefore, the effect of the relative orientation between the magnetizations in the different YIG layers on the dispersion and time delay can be explored. The geometry of the multilayered structure is shown in Fig. 1. The film planes were chosen 10 be in the (110) plane. The applied field is normal to the film plane. The two magnetizations of the two YIG layers are represented by Mi and M,, respectively. The bulk parameters, which are adopted from the previous work', for one layer are 4nM,=1750 Gauss, 2KI/M,=-82 Oe. 2KJh4,=0 for the other layer 4xM,=1256 Gauss, 2K,M,=-82 Oe, 2KJM,=50 Oe, where K, and K. are cubic and induced in-plane anisotropy energy constants, respectively. As shown in Fig. 1, it is assumed that M, has an arbitrary angle a with respect to M,. which is aligned with the applied dc filed. The dependence of a on the applied field has been obtained by the analysis of free energy and equilibrium conditions of the stmcture. When the applied dc field approaches the sum of 4xM,. the cubic and induced in-plane anisotropy fields of layer 2, M, is perpendicular to the film plane while M, is neither normal to the film plane nor in the film plane. This arbitrary orientation of Mi with respect to M, is attributed to the existence of the cubic and induced in-plane anisotropy fields. Fig. 2 illustrates the relationship between the applied dc field and the angle a I t is obvious that the misalignment between MI and M, in the layered structure provides a new configuration for MSVW propagation. Under the magnetostatic approximation, combined with the boundary conditions, the general dispersion relation has bcen obtained. The dispersion includes two parts One is the product of the individual dispersion of each layer. The other is the coupling tcrm due to the interaction between the two YIG layers. I n the limiting case, i.e.. a=O. our dispersion reduces to the form obtained by Daniel and Emlage', and Parekh and Chang'. Numerical computation has been performed to obtain dispersion curves of fundamental mode of MSFVW for different angle a. I t is found that the Iowr limit of MSWW is strongly dependent upon the angle a. In this study, three different values of a werc used to calculate the dispersion curves. Fig. 3 shows the dispersion relation for a=36.72'. H,=1400 Gauss with the propagation direction along the x-axis. Thew exist W O branches of the dispersion cuwes. each of which corresponds to each magnetic layer. Difference between the two branches is caused by the differcnt static magnetizations and uniaxial anisotropy fields in the W O YIG layers. Also, the effect of the separation between the two magnet","PeriodicalId":133930,"journal":{"name":"1992. Digests of Intermag.
