The advanced stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis is connected with shorter overall survival rates when compared to female patients. We estimate 1, 2, 3, and 5-year overall survival rates in male breast cancer patients treated in the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice between 1996 and 2007, and to evaluate potential prognostic factors influencing patients’ survival rate. Material and methods. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 61 males treated due to breast carcinoma in the Institute of Oncology between 1996 and 2007. The median age was 61 years. The majority of patients were diagnosed in an advanced stage: T3-4 51%, N1-3 46%, M1 11%. The most represented histological type was invasive ductal carcinoma (46%). Tumors were estrogen-receptor positive in 46% and progesterone-receptor positive in 41% of cases. Of the 45 patients who were treated radically, surgery was performed in 84%. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was performed in 20% and adjuvant in 36% of patients. Adjuvant hormonal therapy was administered to 62%. Palliative treatment was administered to 26% of patients. results. The 5-year overall survival rates in the palliative and radical group were 35% and 59%, respectively (p = 0.01). In radically-treated patients 5-year diseasefree survival was 48%. The variables with the strongest positive influence on the total survival rate included adjuvant hormonal therapy (p = 0.006) and radical surgery (p = 0.01). The use of chemotherapy had no significant influence on overall survival (p = 0.06). Radiotherapy (p = 0.8) had no influence on overall survival. Conclusions. Radical mastectomy is the treatment of choice for male breast cancer patients. Negative receptor status has the most significant negative influence on survival. table 1. Paraurethral cyst-like structures are quite common and affect from 1% to 6% of the female population between 20 and 60 years of age. Urethral diverticula account for approximately 80% of paraurethral cyst-like lesions. Paraurethral cysts are considerably less frequent. Because of their usually asymptomatic character, paraurethral cysts are rarely diagnosed and treated, and reports available in databases are relatively scarce. However, the presence of cysts may cause recurrent genitourinary symptoms. Symptomatic cysts are an indication for surgical treatment. The aim of the paper is to present our own material concerning the treatment of this disease. Material and methods. Three patients with paraurethral cysts, reporting symptoms such as dysuria, dyspareunia, and periodical pains in the region of external genitals were hospitalized in our department between 2005 and 2008. All patients underwent surgical resection of the cysts by vaginal approach. results. Sustained lack of symptoms was obtained in all patients. Histopathology of the excised lesions confirmed the diagnosis of simple cysts lined with stratified squamous epithelium. No rare complications described in literature were noted. Conclusions. The results of this study are consistent with the few existing literature reports. In the case of symptomatic paraurethral cysts, a relatively simple surgical procedure, associated with low risk of postoperative complications, leads to a complete cure.","PeriodicalId":133584,"journal":{"name":"Central European Journal of Urology 1\\/2010","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133922107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Isoflavones are the subclass of flavonoids with chemopreventive and anticancer activities. Isoflavones induce cytotoxicity and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. TRAIL plays an important role in immune surveillance and the defense mechanism against tumor cells. However, not all tumor cells are sensitive to TRAIL. TRAIL-resistant cancer cells can be sensitized to TRAILinduced apoptosis by flavonoids. We investigated the effect of TRAIL in combination with isoflavones on prostate cancer cells. Materials and methods. The LNCaP human prostate cancer cells were incubated with TRAIL and/or isoflavones (daidzein, puerarin, ipriflavone, genistein, neobavaisoflavone, and biochanin-A). Cytotoxicity was determined by MTT and LDH assays. results. Our study confirmed that LNCaP prostate cancer cells were resistant to TRAIL. We therefore examined the cytotoxic effect of TRAIL in combination with isoflavones on LNCaP cells. We showed for the first time that tested isoflavones markedly augmented TRAIL mediated cytotoxicity against prostate cancer cells. The strongest cytotoxic effect in combination with TRAIL was exhibited by neobavaisoflavone and biochanin-A. Co-treatment of prostate cancer cells with TRAIL and isoflavones, especially neobavaisoflavone and biochanin-A significantly sensitized LNCaP cells to TRAIL induced cytotoxicity. Conclusion. The tested isoflavones augmented the cytotoxic effect of TRAIL on LNCaP cells. The obtained results suggest that isoflavones supported TRAIL-induced cytotoxicity in prostate cancer cells and thus they might be a promising chemopreventive strategy in prostate cancer.","PeriodicalId":133584,"journal":{"name":"Central European Journal of Urology 1\\/2010","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134030635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, there are not many large studies evaluating its management. The article describes the case of a patient with high-flow priapism caused by an arterio-lacunar fistula resulting from a perineal trauma affecting the base of the left cavernous body. After unsuccessful selective embolization open direct excision of the vascular malformation was performed. The localization of the lesion was enabled by clinical examination and by Doppler ultrasound. The treatment was successful and erectile function fully recovered after one month. This simple method may be of value when modern minimally invasive techniques appear to be uneffective. fig. 1. Radical retropubic prostatectomy constitutes one of the major methods of treatment for clinically organ-confined prostate cancer. Numerous studies have reported different morbidities associated with this procedure. We assessed postoperative complications connected with radical retropubic prostatectomy in our series and compared them to the data obtained from the literature. Material and methods. We analyzed a consecutive series of 108 patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy between 01.01.2000 and 30.12.2005 in the Urology Department of the Regional Railway Hospital in Lublin. We evaluated intraoperative complications, early complications (within 1 month postoperatively) and late complications (after 1 month postoperatively.) results. There were no deaths in the studied group. Overall, there were 62 intraoperative and early complications observed in 51 (47.2%) patients undergoing the procedure. The main complication was intraoperative hemorrhage requiring blood transfusion observed in 44 (40.7%) patients. As for late complications urinary incontinence and anastomotic stricture was found in 12.1% and 13.7% of patients, respectively. All patients reported erectile dysfunction. Conclusions. Radical retropubic prostatectomy is a relatively safe procedure. Most patients were not affected by any postoperative complications and urinary continence 12 months after the procedure is consistent with the major referral centers.","PeriodicalId":133584,"journal":{"name":"Central European Journal of Urology 1\\/2010","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124790486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
