Eradicating H. pylori with antibiotics is a global challenge due to medication resistance. Developing new treatment regimens is one of the most important tactics for combating medication resistance. Herbal treatments have attracted a lot of interest recently among the many H. pylori infection adjunct therapies. M. longifolia is an edible plant found in northern Iran; its leaves have traditionally been used to cure gastrointestinal ailments. This study aims to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) derived from M. longifolia leaves using GC-MS and assess the anti-H. pylori activity of the EO and methanolic extract using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods. Results showed that the main components of M. longifolia EO were cis-Piperitenone oxide (67.064%), piperitenone oxide (9.135%), L-Menthone (5.745%), Trans Caryophyllene (5.271%) and Eucalyptol (3.524%). M. longifolia EO exhibited the greatest anti-H. pylori activity (MIC=187 µg/mL), while the methanolic extract was (MIC=1500 µg/mL). The phytochemicals studied in this study have the potential to be utilized as adjuvant therapy with standard antibiotics against H. pylori.","PeriodicalId":13297,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Natural Products and Resources","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135212776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Correct identification for the use of genuine species in herbal preparation is essential to ensure the safety and quality of herbal medicines. Developments of standard botanical monographs are known to help in the easy, cost-effective and authentic identification of raw herbal samples of genuine species. The present study involved the botanical characterization of plant material (leaf, fruit, stem, and root) of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal. The study of macroscopic and microscopic characters using a stereomicroscope and compound microscope was observed with unique qualitative and quantitative features including characteristic C-shaped vascular bundle arrangement (in leaf); solitary, linear, and grouped xylem vessels in root anatomy; and multi-cellular branched trichomes (in stem, leaf and fruit); the presence of starch in root powder, and prismatic crystals in root and fruit powder as characteristic features. Also, the size of various cells and tissue zones were also provided for studied plant samples. Detailed botanical characters compiled in the present study can be used as a reference standard by herbal drug industries to check the adulteration of W. somnifera by correct identification of raw herbal samples in intact or fragmented form.","PeriodicalId":13297,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Natural Products and Resources","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70705178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This plant has been reported to possess anti-microbial, anti-oxidative, wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The study aimed to evaluate the anti-diabetic potentials of J. multifida. The study deals with the extraction of the leaves of the plant by using 50% ethanol followed by fractionation of the ethanol extract obtained. Various physicochemical parameters and phytochemical analyses were done by TLC and HPTLC. Phytochemical analysis of the extract and its fraction indicated high concentrations of flavonoids, phenolic acid and saponins. The effects of the 50% ethanol extract of J. multifida leaves, and its hexane fraction were investigated in high-fat diet and Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. At the end of the treatment, the reduction in blood glucose level in rats treated with ethanol extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg was found to be 117.5±1.7 and hexane fraction at 200 mg/kg was found to be 105±2.5. A significant improvement in lipid profile and liver abnormalities of the rats was observed. The result of the present study is also justified by histopathological examinations of the pancreas and liver. Therefore, the current study proved that both the ethanolic extract of J. multifida and its hexane fraction possess bioactive constituents that could be responsible for the anti-diabetic properties. Out of the two, maximum improvement was seen using hexane fraction at 200 mg/kg. This may be due to the active phytoconstituents isolated from the fraction of the 50% ethanolic extract of the leaves.","PeriodicalId":13297,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Natural Products and Resources","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135212296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alcohol liver diseases lead to a spectrum of diseases, including fatty liver, hepatitis and cirrhosis. Currently, no ideal treatment is available for this condition. Natural products and their derivatives are considered promising hepatoprotective agents. Mushrooms are considered a delicacy and rich source of bioactive compounds. Hence, we examined the hepatoprotective activity of aqueous ethanolic extracts of an edible mushroom, Hypsizygus ulmarius and its cultured mycelia. Hepatic damages were induced by oral administration of ethanol (36%, 2 mL/ 100 g body weight) for 30 days. Silymarin (100 mg/Kg body weight) was used as a standard reference drug. Administration of ethanol significantly elevated serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase. Treatment with the bioactive extracts of fruiting bodies and cultured mycelia significantly down-regulated activities of liver injury maker enzymes and elevated activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione, glutathione-s-transferase, and reduced the level of malondialdehyde in hepatic tissue. Histopathological observations of hepatic tissue, such as reduction in centrilobular necrosis, fatty infiltration and lymphocytic infiltration, also supported the protective effect of the extracts. The results thus indicated that bioactive extracts of H. ulmarius and its mycelia possessed a significant protective effect against alcohol-induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats. The findings suggested the potential therapeutic use of this edible mushroom for ameliorating alcohol-induced liver injury.","PeriodicalId":13297,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Natural Products and Resources","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135212783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to look at signs of oxidative stress in red blood cells (RBCs) treated with curcumin as a function of age. A total of 116 healthy volunteers ranging in age from 20 to 81 years provided clinically pertinent blood samples for the investigation. Three groups of subjects were created: young (20 to 35 years), middle (36 to 60 years), and old (>60 years). Oxidative stress was induced in vitro by incubating RBCs with 10 -5 M tert -butyl hydroperoxide ( t -BHP). Malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione were detected by co-incubating RBCs with curcumin (10 -8 M to 10 -5 M final concentration) and t -BHP to assess the effect of curcumin. After being incubated with t -BHP, the results revealed higher MDA levels ( P <0.001) in comparison to their respective controls and the GSH level significantly ( P <0.001) decreased during ageing. By raising GSH and lowering MDA levels, curcumin treatment in vitro considerably ( P <0.01) mitigated the harmful effect of oxidative stress in RBCs from all age groups. The results of this study showed the potential role of curcumin in the ageing process and it will facilitate the quick screening of novel chemical compounds that may protect RBCs from oxidative stress.","PeriodicalId":13297,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Natural Products and Resources","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70704948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
