End-to-end delay is a primary concern for real-time applications. Much work have been done recently in order to fully exploit the multi-homing character of emerging wireless mobile systems addressing both communication performance as well as seamless handover. We propose an algorithm for path selection based on smallest delay that takes into account the dynamic asymmetry over the available routes. An example is provided showing how a multimedia application could benefit from this approach.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130160932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast, in a typical usage scenario the interfaces will have different properties. There will be a need for longer range resulting in a lower bandwidth, while some applications will have higher capacity requirements but for nodes in close proximity. A solution may be to use one interface with low bandwidth and long range for example in the UHF band, whilst the other interface has a higher bandwidth and shorter range in the VHF or SHF band. Such a solution will not be energy efficient, so it will be feasible only for vehicle-mounted radios like in tactical military or emergency service networks. With the shortest path routing, the long range interfaces tend to be selected. The traffic is therefore shifted towards the links with the lowest capacity. Firstly, we analyze and illustrate the problem for the typical reactive routing protocol, AODV. Secondly, we propose two techniques that take the underlying radio capacity into account when a new route is established. Compared to original AODV, the proposed algorithms provide higher network throughput, less routing overhead, less end-to-end delay and still provides connectivity. The applicability to this approach is one of practical interest to scenarios where nodes are typically unevenly distributed; a network where some nodes only are reachable over long range radios, while others are also reachable over short range high capacity radios.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131770270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first fix the routing, which reduces the network to a tree. We then present scheduling algorithms which provide per flow QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees to real and interactive data applications while utilizing the network resources efficiently. Our algorithms are also scalable: they do not require per flow processing and queueing and the computational requirements are minimal. We also discuss admission control policies which ensure that sufficient resources are available. We have verified our algorithms via extensive simulations.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"394 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123715364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Multi-Object video coding schemes enhances the traditional concept of video sequence and proposes a synchronized set of video objects (VO) organized in a flexible way. According to this new paradigm, wireless MO video delivery becomes one of the greatest challenges in the near future. Unfortunately, wireless networks are characterized by large number of packet losses because of fading communication channels. Thus, loss recovery mechanisms must be added to prevent video degradation. In this paper, we propose a video object-based unequal error protection mechanism, which allocate an optimal FEC redundancy ratio to each object. This FEC allocation is done according to video objects relevance, and the wireless network packet loss rate. This wireless packet loss rate is modeled using a Gilbert-Elliot model. Our results demonstrate that video quality degradation can be significantly reduced.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124866032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MPEG-4 and H.264 are compression standards targeted at high-quality streamed multimedia services over wireless best-effort IP networks. However, the dynamic nature of wireless networks in terms of fluctuating bandwidth and time-varying delays makes it difficult to provide good quality streaming under such constraints. Multimedia streaming applications are a demanding and challenging service to deliver over wireless networks. There is a trade-off between the capacity of the wireless network and the quality of the multimedia streaming application. In this paper we investigate the effect the background traffic load has on unicast streaming video sessions. We show that above a certain load value, the video streaming session is slowly starved of bandwidth. The load value at which this occurs depends on the characteristics of the background traffic load in terms of packet rates and the number of sources contributing to the load.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133416865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of these protocols are analyzed by two standard techniques: simulation and security analysis. There has been a lack of work related to the performance of secure routing protocols in real network testbed. In this paper, we present quantitative results for the performance comparisons between AODV and SAODV routing protocols by using a small-scale experimental testbed, which consists of 10 laptops within a 250 m by 100 m rugby field. Apart from outdoor testing, we also compare the results with those obtained via simulation and indoor emulation. The workload includes both UDP and TCP traffic. Results show that SAODV is effective in preventing routing message tampering and data dropping attacks. For outdoor experiments, we also estimate the average distance within a communication gray zone under different bit rates.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133711289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we propose an information theoretically motivated framework for optimal multi-rate communication of multimedia contents, generically coded for a packet switched network, over fading wireless channels. The results in this paper however, extent themselves to any other wireless digital broadcast system as well. Under idealized conditions, for both fast and slow fading scenarios, the optimal rate allocations can be found by solving a convex optimization problem. We then devise a systematic way to find a near optimal solution for non-ideal, practical scenarios. Finally, we demonstrate the validity of our approach through simulations of an image streaming system that uses rate compatible convolutional codes to transmit multiple-description coded packets at the wireless access point.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129204555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose and analyze a frequency-hopping scheme for interference control in GPRS channels. This scheme allows GPRS packets to overflow from interference-limited carrier channels to carrier channels with less or no interference. We have shown via numerical results that the overflow mechanism is efficient in reducing access time at interference-limited channels, with little adverse effect on the access time at interference-free channels, hence improving overall system performance.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115887974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research in Transmitter Power Control (TPC) has proposed various schemes for different traffic types without addressing effectively the problem of coexistence. Each of the TPC schemes of the literature is usually (i) unsuitable/inefficient for supporting diverse traffic types, and (ii) incompatible with each other, leading to conflicts if operated over common wireless channels.In this paper, we tackle the problem of coexistence by presenting novel converged TPC schemes. First, we investigate converged TPC schemes for links carrying the two basic traffic types of media streaming circuit-switched/constant-rate traffic (i.e. voice, CBR video), andpacket-switched elastic traffic (i.e. data).Evaluated against conventional TPC algorithms operating in dedicated wireless resources, the proposed schemes are demonstrated to increase the capacity of the wireless network. Second, we explore new hybrid types of traffic that combine the best-effort grade of service adapting to the network conditions with a guaranteed minimum, and propose appropriate TPC schemes.","PeriodicalId":131891,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131352104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
