While our scholarly interests (mining, space, education, transport infrastructure) and disciplines are distinct, we reflect on how their convergence in the city indicates broader historical shifts in Arctic imaginaries and the political economies of research, which follow and shape climate geopolitics, development, and cultural practices. In the interstices of these currents, the Arctic – imagined as empty and remote from global metropoles – becomes crowded and connected through mobility to and from as well as within the Arctic, which shapes processes of knowledge production.

By distant reading and topic modeling a dataset of more than 11,000 parliamentary minutes – approximately 400 million characters – the article gives a new perspective of Swedish media history in general and national media politics in particular. The article uses the computational method topic modeling to study latent themes or discourses in the dataset (by accentuating words that tend to co-occur) that together create different topics. The article includes a number of media historical observations and findings, and the frequent graphs also display interconnections between different media topics, as well as other societal topics that media were related to.
The notion that the digital world is altogether virtual or immaterial has been successfully debunked by scholars during the last decade or so. The cloud rests, as it were, on large data centers consuming electricity equivalent to entire cities. Yet, the level where users encounter digital information is typically devoid of traces of use as well as the common signs of aging that we associate with physical things exposed to time. This becomes apparent as we begin to study the earliest so called born-digital archives. Any vintage equipment used in the process may, of course, be dented and faded, the subject matter, cultural references, writing style, artistic design, technical limitations and so on will surely indicate time gone by. Hence, intellectually we will perfectly well recognize that we are working with material from the early days of personal computing by these marks of antiquity as David Lowenthal has called them. But the files displayed on the screen – be they symbols of the interface, a spreadsheet, a personal letter, items in the trashcan – will reveal no look of age. With scholars increasingly interested in the material dimensions of their research and provided that the look of age is considered important as a set of unique visual and sensory cues pointing to the prior use and handling of an object – then researchers might have to reassess their tools for how to make sense of these materials. This, I argue, is an up until now scarcely considered aspect of digital archives, revealing itself most visibly to scholars prepared to engage directly with antiquated equipment such as running old files on old machines or exploring vintage applications on original consoles. If the old documents we study in some respects look new (or somehow beyond time, aging or decay) – does it matter?\u0000

The article maps the pitfalls and affordances of ASR in the study of audiovisual media and digital history more broadly. Three key topics are emphasized: first, the collaboration between scholars and audiovisual archives and the potential of automatic speech recognition to transform the way scholars navigate and engage with audiovisual media history; second, what knowledge can be gained from employing automatic speech recognition in the exploration of film and television history; and lastly, thoughts on trajectories for future research. Even though the National Library of Sweden’s audiovisual collection is frequently used in humanities and social science scholarship, no previous research project has utilized automatic speech recognition algorithms to analyze material from their collection. As such, this reflection aims to contribute toward methodological development.

Partikongressens form
Solemn voices echo through the speakers, the clatter of glass and bursts of laughter give way to loud applause. These are some of the sounds captured on the gramophone recording of the Social Democrats' annual congress in 1969. The Party Congress was an important arena for political thinking in 20th century Sweden, yet we know relatively little about how it functioned. This article analyses the form of the party congress by studying sound recordings from the Social Democratic Party, The Swedish Association of Christian Social Democrats, Social Democratic Women in Sweden, and the Communist party, between 1968 and 1978. What was going on at these meetings and how can audio data supplement the understanding provided by the texts of the minutes? The party congress was a nexus for party political discourse. Decisive decisions were made, ideas were exchanged, and lines of conflict were drawn. Precisely for this reason, historical research has repeatedly consulted the congress minutes to study the circulation and development of political ideas. However, the minutes provide a limited understanding of the form of the meeting itself. The preserved audio recordings can instead contribute to our understanding of the arrangement of the meetings; who was allowed to speak for long and who was interrupted. Automated signal processing offers the possibility of exploring this rich material on a large scale. It also enables granular inspection and curated close listening. In this way, the digital analysis methods of today enable research to move along the scale of the data set. By bringing together machine processing and human listening, it is possible to gain new insights into the Party Congress and better understand one of the central environments in which Swedish social democracy took shape.

By highlighting differences in how the two fields treat these central historiographical issues, I aim better to understand some of the difficulties of conducting and publishing research in the history of ideas, based on digital-history methods. \u0000The study is separated into two sections: first, I make a qualitative analysis of texts containing reflexive discussions on method, produced during the early discipline-forming phases of each field. Then, I do a distant reading of peer-reviewed articles in Lychnos published 2005–2020, as well as of a recent edited volume in digital history. This analysis provides an overview of recent discussion of method in these two fields, while it at the same time serves as an example of such methods shape the way we write history.
In this article we discuss the benefits of applying a mixed methods approach to the history of ideas. The article is based upon two cases of different character, applying methods from the field of digital textual analysis, and from the field of digital spatio-temporal map visualization. \u0000One case concerns all churches and prayer chapels in the Diocese of Luleå, and comprises 1200 entry points. The project originates in the question of whether a Bible belt exists in the north of Sweden; what it (if there is one) looks like, what its characteristics are, and how it has evolved over time. The spatio-temporal visualization both clarifies general patterns of religious fervor, but also reveals “white spots” and areas of conflicting interests, creating questions for further research. \u0000The second case stems from a larger project investigating contemporary online use of the concept “Creativity”. Here, distributional concept analysis is performed using Sketch Engine on the corpus English Web 2020 (enTenTen20), consisting of 38 billion English words gathered in 2020 from Wikipedia, blogs, online magazines and journals. Lists are assembled over which words are most often used together (co-locates) with creativity. Then, the research process is outlined, where use of such distant reading tools encourages returns to close readings of other materials (for instance speeches by American presidents) in an iterative process. \u0000The two cases illustrate the possibilities inherent in the process of moving between overarching, “distant”, levels, where digital methods can show large patterns, and more specific and detailed, “close” levels, with focus on particular places or points of interest. The mixed method approach we propose is not new, but we argue that by using digital (instead of analogous) methods this can be done at a much larger scale, with less effort. Furthermore, we will show how this oscillation between on the one hand distant, large-scale, computer aided methods, and on the other close readings and interpretations, generate new, interesting historical questions in an iterative process. \u0000Finally, we discuss our experiences of multidisciplinary approaches to digital history, describe setbacks and unexpected wins, and argue that the benefits and potential of this approach outweigh the risks. \u0000
