M. Linevsky to L. Ya. Sternberg (1926–1927), and presents photographs of their handwritten originals. It is these four letters that the author of the article considers particularly important, since they marked a certain milestone in the fate of Linevsky as a researcher. Two letters (1926) were written before and two (1927) after the discovery of Besovy Sledki petroglyphs, which led Linevsky to the field of archaeology. There are also excerpts from his letters to A. Ya. Bryusov (1927–1929), which will allow the reader to get an idea of the first steps of A. M. Linevsky in the study and deciphering of Karelian rock carvings, which followed immediately after the discovery of petroglyphs on Shoirukshin Island by a novice ethnographer.","PeriodicalId":130335,"journal":{"name":"Prehistoric Archaeology. It is shown that the Middle Paleolithic technology was oriented at the production of points that were mainly struck from convergent single platform (unidirectional) Levallois cores. The Initial Upper Paleolithic industry is characterized by sub-prismatic opposed platform (bidirectional) cores aimed at the production of blades. The author draws many analogies with synchronous industries distributed from the Levant to the east of South Siberia and Central Asia. The available archaeological, chronological and paleogeographic evidence gives grounds to argue that the development of the Paleolithic culture in Northern Asia was strongly affected by climatic fluctuations that took place during the Upper Pleistocene and had a significant impact on human migration routes.","PeriodicalId":130335,"journal":{"name":"Prehistoric Archaeology. There is evidence that early Neo- lithic societies in Southwest Asia promoted egalitarian behavior, through mechanisms such as mortuary practices which concealed individual identity, and sharing of food re- sources, for example in communal grana-ries. It has often been assumed that this egal- itarian behavior continues traditional hunter-gatherer practices, designed to resist the potential for individual, or household wealth differentiation permitted by innovative food production and storage practices. However, there is little, or no evidence that the pre- ceding Natufian culture was representative of what we identify as a typical hunter-gatherer society. Equality may have been just one of the innovations developed by early Neolith- ic societies, subsequently replaced in the later Neolithic and the development of a more hierarchical social system.","PeriodicalId":130335,"journal":{"name":"Prehistoric Archaeology.
