In the elderly, some body functions, including nutrition, are impaired, so it is important toconsider dietary supplements at this time. Consumption of dietary supplements by the elderly has becomecommon in recent years. In addition, the global ageing process has accelerated significantly in recent decades.Currently, on the food market, there are many dietary supplements dedicated to the elderly. Manufacturersof these products are able to perfectly recognize the special nutritional needs of the elderly, which results inthe creation of new lines of modern products.Objective: The purpose of the study was to analyse the use of dietary supplements administered in theelderly, improvement of seniors’ knowledge on dietary supplements and investigation of their awarenessabout the risks associated with such products.Methods: The study was conducted by questionnaire method among 302 elderly people in two provincesof Poland. Additionally, dietary supplements offered at various retail outlets were reviewed (53), as well aspublic warnings published by the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate in Poland that addressed the risks with dietarysupplements (10).Results: The questionnaire was completed by 302 respondents (217 females, 85 males). The age of therespondents was distributed as follows: 32.45% aged 65–74, 44. % aged 75–79, 23.17% aged ≥80. Dietarysupplements consumed by seniors or widely offered in the food market mainly include ingredients asfollows: plant preparations, vitamins and minerals, electrolytes. Significantly more women have been takingdietary supplements (72%), compared to men (36%). Simultaneous administration of two or more productswas declared by 71.9% of respondents. Unfortunately, only 21% of respondents recognized any risks ofconsuming dietary supplements.Conclusion: The use of dietary supplements among elderly people has definitely increased lately. Thequestionnaire shows that approximately 86% of respondents have consumed dietary supplements at leastonce in their life, while 14% of respondents have never used these products. The survey demonstrates thatthere is a need of the continued education of the elderly about dietary supplementation and the dangers ofuncontrolled consumption of different types of supplements.","PeriodicalId":12990,"journal":{"name":"Herba Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139260578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They contribute to regulation of plants growth and development, act as regulators of plant processes as seed germination, elongation growth, photomorphogenesis and photosynthesis. They are critical in response to environmental and biotic stresses like: heat, salinity, heavy metal pollution or pathogenic microorganisms. Drought stress occurs during deficiency of water in the plant environment. Lack of water in plant medium highly affects the plant development. It comes to plant processes disorders and abnormal development of plants. Long-term drought stress may cause the death of plant. Drought stress occurs in agriculture. Hence, there is a need to protect plants against its effect. Numerous reports indicate that BRs are beneficial to plants during stress, including drought. In the following research, the role of BRs in plants and usefulness of these growth regulators during stresses, especially drought, was explained. Additionally, the previous use in agriculture was described.","PeriodicalId":12990,"journal":{"name":"Herba Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135487289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a medicinal plantgrowing in Algeria. This plant is used worldwide as effective pharmacological remedy. Objective: This study describes in detail the phytochemical composition and the in vitro biological activitiesof R. alaternus L. aerial parts extracts. Methods: Total contents of bioactive components were estimated and the antioxidant potential was assessedby DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays, ferric reducing antioxidant activity and total antioxidantcapacity. Additionally, the haemolytic activity was evaluated towards human red blood cells and thecytotoxicity was performed using Brine shrimp lethality test. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity wasestimated in vitro against five bacteria. Seven known secondary metabolites have been established usingdifferent spectroscopic techniques such as 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and ESI mass spectrometry andby comparison to data reported in the literature. Results: The chemical investigation of the aerial portions’ ethyl acetate extract of R. alaternus allowed thecharacterization of three triterpenoids, two phytosterols and two flavonoids. High levels of phenols andflavonoids were estimated in both ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (n-BuOH) extracts. These extractsexhibit strong ferric reducing antioxidant activity and significant hydroxyl and DPPH radicals scavengingeffects. Moreover, the petroleum ether (PE) extract shows a very strong hemolytic effect with 94.03 0.21% at 50 μg/mL and induces the mortality of 78.57 0.17% of Brine Shrimp nauplii at 20 μg/mL. Furthermore,the tested crude extracts (PE, EtOAc and n-BuOH) inhibit the growth of all the bacterial strains.Conclusion: R. alaternus constitutes a natural resource of bioactive substances with potential cytotoxic,antioxidant and antibacterial effects.","PeriodicalId":12990,"journal":{"name":"Herba Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135991036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The leaves of the plant are consideredto be a raw material richest in bioactive substances. The unique properties of the plant are primarily dueto polyphenols, in particular flavonoids, including: rutin, albanon, kuwanone, which make it possible touse white mulberry as an agent with a wide spectrum of activities, from anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic,antioxidant to antimicrobial. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the method of extracting substances fromdried white mulberry leaves on the antibacterial activity of the obtained extracts. Four extraction methodswere used to obtain the extracts, and then their antimicrobial activity against selected Gram-positive andGram-negative bacteria was determined. Methods: Mulberry leaves were collected in September 2021 from an ecological plantation located at theExperimental Station, Institute of Natural Fibers and Medicinal Plants in Poznań – National ResearchInstitute in Pętkowo. Leaves were dried at 60C for 12 hours, then laboratory analyses were performed.The extraction was carried out by the following methods: 1.) carbon dioxide extraction, 2.) carbon dioxideextraction using a cosolvent, 3.) maceration with carbon dioxide extraction using a cosolvent, 4.) solventextraction. Then, the antimicrobial activity of the obtained extracts against selected strains of Grampositiveand Gram-negative bacteria was determined. MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC(minimum bactericidal concentration) were determined. Results: As a result of the conducted research it was found that there are differences in the antibacterialactivites of extracts from dried white mulberry leaves depending on the extraction method used. Thehighest antibacterial activity both against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was shown by extractsobtained using a supercritical carbon dioxide extractor without the use of cosolventa, with more effectivegrowth-inhibiting and bactericidal effects observed against Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gramnegativebacteria. Conclusions: Extracts obtained from dried leaves of white mulberry (Morus alba L.) of the Polish variety“Żółwińska wielkolistna” have antibacterial properties. This leads to the possibility of using white mulberryin herbal medicine and pharmacology as an antimicrobial agent.","PeriodicalId":12990,"journal":{"name":"Herba Polonica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136283210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
