The conducting current was firstly mentioned by the author in 1994 in Sendai. Then, in 2000, the presence of LF fields around a terminal was discovered and presented (Trzaska, H., Proc. Asia-Pacific Conf. on Environmental Electromagnetics, CEEM'2000, p.72-5, 2000). The latest investigations include studies of envelope detection in a living body and the presence of LF potentials in the body. It aims to separate the interference from the mixtures and, as such, produce the spread spectrum signal with reduced jammer contamination, exploiting only the assumption of mutual independence between the sources, and achieves despreading at the same time. This approach can be applied further to immunise the system against the near-far effect. This decreases the system multiple access interference (MAI) and increases the system capacity. We have succeeded in observing sprites for winter lightning in the Hokuriku area (Japan Sea side) of Japan in the winter of 2001/2002. The optical results on three days are compared with the corresponding characteristics of parent (causative) lightning with particular attention to the significant differences between Hokuriku winter lightning and the more widely studied continental lightning. Despite significant differences with Hokuriku winter lightning, we have found nearly the same sprite properties as already observed in continental USA, with one significant difference (simpler shape for Hokuriku winter sprite). We also discuss the criteria for sprite occurrence. Specifically, two similar criteria are found: (1) cloud-to-ground discharges of positive polarity; (2) the presence of a certain threshold in vertical charge moment (200-300 C.km) (roughly consistent with that for continental USA). Mesoscale convective systems are not necessary to store the charge necessary for sprites, but the parent Hokuriku winter clouds are substantially smaller than the minimum scale for sprite occurrence in continental lightning, but they are larger in area than ordinary summer thunderclouds. In order to reduce the multipath fading effect on the short wave channel, the design adopted OFDM, inband frequency diversity, and turbo code technologies. On condition that the intensive cochannel interference is suppressed, the modem can realize transmission at data rates of 8 kb/s, 16 kb/s and 32 kb/s on a 125 kHz bandwidth HF channel.
