Our purpose was to examine differences with regard to measurable carcass dimensions and also to establish between and within breed relationships among the carcass components. Measured variables included: carcass weight (CW), leg length (LL), carcass internal length (IL), carcass length (CL), chest width (ChW), hip width (HW), chest depth (CD), leg circumference (LC) and chest circumference (CC). From these measurements seven indices were obtained. Roussillon Red carcasses were the shortest, with the largest leg capacity, the lowest corporal index and giving a sense of\"squareness\". Xisqueta carcasses presented the longest leg length. Ripollesa carcasses were the smallest in chest circumference. The rest of the variables were similar between breeds.","PeriodicalId":129688,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Sheep and Goat Sciences","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124125322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty post pubertal ewes were randomly assigned to four treatment groups (n=5) beside four rams were used for the study. Animals in group I serve as control (0.5 ml normal saline), in group II and III estrus was synchronized by daily intramuscular injection of 10 mg and 15 mg progesterone for 14 days, respectively. Intravaginal sponges containing 30 mg progesterone acetate was used in group IV (14 days). Rams were used to check heat of ewes starting 24 hours after progesterone withdrawal. Mean values of all morphometric characteristics of the genitalia and relative weights of reproductive organs did not show significant differences due to treatments. There was significant difference in foetal weight, crown rump length, total foetal length, vertebral column length and vertebral column and tail length (p<0.05).","PeriodicalId":129688,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Sheep and Goat Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130624696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ghanem","doi":"10.12816/0005029","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12816/0005029","url":null,"abstract":"Thirty subtropical goat kids were used to predict live body weight (BW) and longissimus muscle area (LMA) using body measurements with the help of ultrasound scanning. Body measurements included body length (BL), heart girth (HG), withers height, rump height and paunch girth, in addition to body condition score measurements. Correlation coefficients between both BW and LMA, with the different measurements, were calculated. Simple and multiple regression analyses were used to calculate the prediction equations. All body measurements studied were significantly correlated with each of BW (r = 0.52 – 0.91) and LMA (r = 0.50 – 0.89). Both HG (r = 0.91) and BL (r = 0.90) presented the highest correlations with BW of kids, while the measurements of BW, BL and HG presented the highest correlations (r = 0.87 – 0.89) with LMA. Live BW of kids was accurately and significantly (p <0.001) predicted by the measurements of HG and BL with R 2 = 0.88. While BW, BL and HG were significantly (p < 0.001) used to predict LMA with R 2 = 0.83. Therefore, in the field, it is available to assess live body weight and longissimus muscle area of growing kids by using body measurements.","PeriodicalId":129688,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Sheep and Goat Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127650142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
