HS encompasses a wide spectrum of research and development directions ranging from intellectual property (IP) protection, hardware metering, and hardware Trojan horse detection, to design of secure smart cards, voting hardware, detection of explosives and chemical and biologic toxic materials, and protection of physical containers using electronic locks. Development ofHS synthesis and evaluation tools have recently received a great deal of attention. However, to the best of our knowledge, no HS courses have been introduced into computer engineering curricula. We summarize the course that was introduced at UCLA and Rice University, present its evaluation, and anticipate future directions to create an even more influential class.","PeriodicalId":129071,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education (MSE'07)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134143119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use a K-map based methodology to introduce a few novel nano-logic design concepts for the undergraduate logic design class. We want them to possess knowledge about a few fundamental abstracted logical behaviors of future nano-devices and their functionality which in turn would motivate them to further investigate these non-CMOS emerging devices, logics and architectures. This would augment critical thinking of the students where they apply the learnt knowledge to a novel/unfamiliar situation. We intend to augment the existing standard EE and CS courses by inserting K-map based knowledge modules on nano-logic structure for stimulating their interest without significant diversion from the course framework. Experiments with our students show that all the students were able to grasp the basic concept of majority logic synthesis and almost 63% of them had a deeper understanding of the synthesis algorithm demonstrated to them.","PeriodicalId":129071,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education (MSE'07)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131120944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system specifically employed is aimed at courses of digital design using FPGA platforms. It is a powerful tool that allows for instruction with experiments and design examples in the classroom and gives students full access to laboratory equipment and an FPGA platform remotely from an internet terminal. This system is called FPGA e-Lab. It is constructed of aXilinx SpartanSE Starter Kit whose hardware is interfaced through a laboratory PC via an interactive LabView Graphical User Interface (GUI) and acquisition hardware as well as RS-232 serial and USB ports. Microsoft XP Remote Desktop is the vehicle used to access the Lab PC from a remote location.","PeriodicalId":129071,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education (MSE'07)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131532445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
