Lithofacies studies was carried out on the Jessu Formation exposed at Dukul and Cham streams outcrops, in order to identify facies, establish facies association and re-construct the paleodepositional environment. Ten (10) facies were identified on the bases of lithology, grain size, sedimentary structures and degree of bioturbation. These facies form four (4) facies associations, namely: the FA-1 (offshore marine), FA-2 (lower shoreface), FA-3 (middle shoreface) and FA-4 (upper shoreface). These facies associations form coarsening upward units from offshore marine to shoreface which suggests a shoreface deposit for the Jessu Formation. The coarsening upward facies succession indicated storm and wave influenced coastal system.","PeriodicalId":128977,"journal":{"name":"Science Forum (Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123624911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentrations of nickel, lead and iron investigated ranged from 0.33-0.67, 6.67-28.33 and 7,740.00-14,106.67 mgkg-1 respectively. Soil samples from Bauchi-Gombe road were found to contain the highest concentrations of lead (28.33 mgkg-1) and iron (14,106.67 mgkg-1) respectively, whilst soil samples from Bauchi-Maiduguri road were found to contain highest concentration of nickel (0.67 mgkg-1). The differences in the concentrations of lead and iron in all the road networks investigated were found to be significantly different (p iU 0.05), whereas the differences in the concentrations of nickel in all the studied road networks were found not to be statistically different (p iU 0.05) as determined by Single Factor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The Tukey Pair-wise Difference (p iU 0.05) further corroborated that significant differences occur in the respective concentrations of lead and iron in all the road networks of Bauchi. The studies further revealed that the highest concentrations of the metals in each case are within the maximum permissible limits set by World Health Organization, which indicates that the soil samples from the road networks have not reached maximum pollution mark and hence, does not presently pose any threat to the inhabitants.","PeriodicalId":128977,"journal":{"name":"Science Forum (Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122105510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to determine the acute and sub-chronic toxicity of the stem bark of the plant in albino rats. Method: In acute test, the limit test dose of 1,500mg/kg was orally administered to albino rats and then observed individual for 72 hours post dosing and once every day for 14 days, and the LD50 was found to be 1,225mg/kg body weight. The sub-chronic toxicity study was done using standard protocol in graded doses of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg, and 400mg/kg of the plant extract for 28 days. At the end of the experiment, chloroform was used to painlessly salvage the rats and was examined both grossly and histopathologically. \u0000Result: Administration of extracts for the experimental period did not record any death; however, loss of appetite and reduced activity were observed in rats dosed with 400mg/kg. Mild histological lesions were also observed in the liver, kidney and heart respectively. \u0000Conclusion: from the above result, it is concluded the aqueous stem bark extract of P. kotschyi is relatively safe. The histopathological changes observed in the organs investigated suggest that the extract should be used with caution when administered for prolonged periods.","PeriodicalId":128977,"journal":{"name":"Science Forum (Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129995982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
