A concise language has been designed to permit the convenient expression of a wide range of requirements and assumptions. A compiler automatically converts these expressions into run-time monitors to watch for, and report, all requirement and assumption violations. The mechanism is applicable to systems which have not necessarily been designed with monitoring in mind, permits addition of further requirements and assumption monitoring on-the-fly, and emphasizes usability by a wide range of end-users.","PeriodicalId":127923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the (19th) International Conference on Software Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129556675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A base engages the driven member and has a stop rising therefrom. An actuation head is disposed above the stop and interconnects with the base by the helical spring assembly. Because these two usage styles are so different, batch systems usually require substantial changes to support interactive use. Specific issues that arise during conversion include assumptions about duration of system execution, incremental and partial processing, scope of processing, unordered and repeated processing, and error handling. Addressing these issues affects the implementation in the areas of memory management, assumptions and invariants, computational organization, and error handling. We use as a working example our conversion of the batch processor for the UniCon architecture description tool into an interactive architecture development tool. To capture the lessons for practitioners undertaking this type of conversion, we summarize with a checklist of design and implementation considerations.","PeriodicalId":127923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the (19th) International Conference on Software Engineering","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133407186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Statistical testing with random operational inputs can produce valid reliability estimates, but its cost may be excessive unless the nature of software changes is considered. We propose an economical way of estimating the reliability of modified software under certain common circumstances. It calls for updatzng a previous reliability estimate by estimating differences in the behavior of successive software versions. The older version is used as a relatzve oracle to reduce the number of executions that must be checked manually for conformance to requirements. Our approach is justified using only elementary probability and does not require reliability growth assumptions.","PeriodicalId":127923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the (19th) International Conference on Software Engineering","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130037209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scarce familiarity of practitioners with formal notations and the difficulties of their use are main causes of the limited success of formal specification methods. Approaches based on the use of popular front-end notations formally defined with mappings on formal models can solve practical problems. However the absence of flexibility of the mappings proposed so far limits the applicability of such approaches to the few environments that match exactly these solutions. This paper presents an original solution based on formalisms to define mappings from front-end notations to formal models. The proposed framework works with different front-end notations and formal models and supports mappings of analysis results obtained on the formal model to the front-end notation chosen by the practitioners. The approach described in this paper has been validated in industrial environments using pilot applications. The paper presents some of the industrial results obtained so far and ongoing experimentations.","PeriodicalId":127923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the (19th) International Conference on Software Engineering","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115725442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
