Therefore, we developed the Resin Frame method within the current facilities that objectively increases mandibular reproducibility without requiring advanced techniques. Methods: Subjects comprised 25 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction by the resin frame method in the Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Jichi Medical University Hospital between October 2013 and August 2015, and 25 patients who underwent the mandibular reconstruction by the conventional method between September 2007 and November 2011. All mandibles were reconstructed using fibula or iliac bones with a reconstruction plate. The computed tomography (CT) Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data before and after the operation were saved. Then, the layer function was used to fuse the pre- and postoperative CT images. Based on measured area, the concordance rate that is matching percentages between pre- and postoperative mandibles were calculated. We evaluated the difference between the concordance rate of the Resin Frame method and the conventional method of mandibular reconstruction. Results: Concordance rates for the resin frame method and conventional surgery were 75.09±6.09% and 67.39±13.44%, respectively, showing a significant difference (p=0.032, p lessthan 0.05). Conclusion: The resin frame method represents a mandibular reconstruction system that increases reproduction accuracy and can be implemented at current facilities using simple, objective techniques. \u0000

Slum children often do not have access to oral health care, and their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) remains largely un-researched topic in Kenya. The present study was designed to determine the prevalence and severity of dental caries and its impact on the OHRQoL of a cohort of slum-dwelling children in a Nairobi slum. Methods: This was a hospital-based mixed methods cross-sectional study carried out at the out-patient HIV-care clinics at Getrude Children’s hospital (GCH), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Mbagathi County and Referral Hospital (MCRH) in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The study involved 221 female caregivers of children with HIV/AIDS and their health workers at the HIV-care clinics. Results: More than two-thirds (68%) of the respondents did not have any form of health insurance to facilitate access to medical and/or dental healthcare. More than three quarters (76%) of those who had utilized oral healthcare services for their children paid from out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses. There was gross underutilization of the National Health Insurance Fund, NHIF, with only 18% of the respondents having been enrolled. Conclusion: Underutilization of social health insurance by caregivers, compounded by OOP spending for health services imposes limitations on the utilization of oral healthcare for children with HIV/AIDS. \u0000

We selected many cases and reviews in order to identify the dental diseases related to sickle cell anemia. Caries and periodontitis are not directly caused by disease. However, an inflammatory state caused by a dental infection can trigger or precipitate a sickle crisis. Malocclusion angle class II is particularly frequent, as a result of bone facial changes and/or related to muscle imbalance. Temporomandibular joint disorder is possible. Asymptomatic pulp necrosis is due to the sickling that causes vasocclusion within microcirculation of the dental pulp. The aim of this study was to determine the factors that are associated with knowledge and positive attitude towards the use of dental floss at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, (LASUTH) and two private dental clinics in Ikeja and Magodo, Lagos State. Methods: This prospective descriptive study was conducted at the oral diagnosis clinic of LASUTH and at two private dental clinics in Lagos State. A structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on socio-demographic items and on the participant's perception regarding gum inflammation, their oral hygiene practices and their knowledge, attitude and practices related to flossing. Results: The study population included dental patients aged 22–68 years. Majority of the respondents in this present study had poor knowledge and attitude on the use of dental floss. Respondents attending the private clinics had significantly better knowledge on the practice of oral hygiene and the use of dental floss (p = 0.000) and they also had a more positive attitude even though the association was not significant. (p = 0.364) The study participants that had a good knowledge and positive attitude on dental floss usage and oral hygiene had lower mean OHI-S, GI and DMFT scores even though the association was not significant. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a poor level of knowledge and attitude to the use of dental floss among the respondents. They have thin roots with concavities and are very important for aesthetic and also for speaking. Due to their narrow internal anatomy, preparing the root canal and post space might be very difficult and endangers them for root wall perforation or fracture. The aim of this study was to measure the root thickness of mandibular incisors. Methods: Root wall thicknesses of eighty mandibular incisors were measured in four sections including the CEJ, 3 mm apical to the CEJ, 4 mm and one mm coronal to the apex and in buccal, lingual and proximal surfaces of concavity areas, using a stereomicroscope. Data were statistically analyzed by repeated measured ANOVA and paired t-test. Results: Buccal surface of the buccal canals and lingual surface of the lingual canals in double-canalled incisors had the greatest root thicknesses compare to the proximal surfaces. Root thickness of single-canalled root was more than of double-canalled ones. Proximal walls had the least root thicknesses in all the sections especially in section 4, at 1 mm from the apex, which was less than 1 mm. Conclusion: In order to avoid technical mishaps during root canal procedures, attention must be paid to the thin concavity proximal walls using anticurvature flaring and also in selection of proper size of master apical file.\u0000

Many procedures have been reported in literature in the last years intending to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement by modifying its biological substrate. Among them, surgical techniques are becoming increasingly popular. The aim of the present article is to review these surgical techniques, offering a clear idea of the scientific evidence available in literature and the possible implications of these techniques in the future. Methods: A literature search was performed in the databases MedLine and Scopus, including all article types focused on surgically-based methods to modify tooth movement in combination with orthodontic or orthopedic force. Results: Osteotomy, corticotomy and piezocision are the most representative of the so-called 'surgically facilitated orthodontic techniques (SFOTs)'. Corticotomy and piezocision share the same biological background (Regional acceleratory phenomena or RAP) while osteotomy is based on osteogenic distraction. A historical overview and a description of the techniques are included in the text. Conclusion: Although clinical results are promising, most of the articles concerning SFOTs are studies performed on animals or case reports. There is a need for evidence-based reports and standardized protocols in order to clarify the process behind tooth movement secondary to surgery, biologically speaking.
