Studies have found that different enrichment strategies can help activate the bears, thereby changing their behaviour and decrease stereotypies. When observing polar bears, it is apparent that individuals exhibit behaviours with different frequencies, which makes it relevant to examine if the animals have different behavioural reaction norms. This study aims to investigate the behaviour of two polar bears in Aalborg Zoo and how enrichments changes their behaviour. Furthermore, it investigates if the polar bears differ in behavioural patterns, reflecting differences in behavioural reaction norms. Although no significant differences were found, the results suggest an association between enrichments and decreased stereotypical behaviour for one bear while there was no detectable change in stereotypical behaviour for the other bear. The different reaction patterns for the two bears, may be due to different behavioural reaction norms e.g. individual differences in neophobia and exploratory behavior. In future studies presentation of the enrichment objects before the test days, may yield more heterogeneous results easier to interpret.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78975917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, the body weight varied from 350.51a±26.61 in cows to 390.56b±51.33 in bulls. The principal components analysis revealed that, as far as body measurements are concerned, three factors accounting for 73.45 % of total variance should be considered for selection purposes. The MI should also be taken into account in such an exercise in White Fulani cattle breed in the North region of Cameroon.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77271684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were filtered with a read coverage between 20 - 100 and a maximum number of missing data of 25 %. Individuals with > 25 % missing data were removed yielding a total of 2.4 million SNPs, and after filtering for Minor allele frequency (MAF) >1 %, 2902 SNPs remained. Approximately half of the individuals analysed contained less than 75% of the selected SNPs, and were removed, resulting in a sample size of 30. We estimated inbreeding coefficients (F), observed (HO), expected (HE) and unbiased expected (uHE) heterozygosity and the percent of polymorphic loci (P%). We tested for deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) and patterns of isolation by distance (IBD). We assessed the genetic structure of the sampled individuals based on a Bayesian clustering method, and tested for recent population expansion or decline. We found a P% = 94.5%, a uHE and HE of mean ± SE; 0.31 ± 0.04 and 0.30 ± 0.02, respectively and an HO of 0.290 ± 0.03. The heterozygosity deficiency was reflected in a positive F-value; 0.1 ± 0.01 and a significant deviation for HWE (p < 0.05). The Mantel test for association between the genetical and geographical distances of populations was not significant (b = 0.007, R = 0.145, p > 0.05). The significant and positive F-value found, was explained by inbreeding, genetic substructure and low effective population size (Ne) which are all consequences of habitat fragmentation. We failed to detect recent signs of a population bottleneck or expansion. Further studies on a larger scale are needed to obtain a general view of the conservation status of the Danish hedgehog population.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91014169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several field surveys were conducted in this region to target BRAHMA type poultry farms based on pre-established contacts with farmers. A total of 67 individuals from the Brahma phenotype hens at different locations in the Tlemcen wilaya were investigated to identify and classify these individuals and to study the morphological differences between them according to their location. Fourteen measurements in which 11 quantitative and three qualitative traits were carried out in this work. The results obtained for all measurements made on the population BRAHMA chickens in the region of Tlemcen with the 8 communes visited, show that there is a significant difference between the morphological characters except two characters length of the tarsi (LT) and width of the thighs (LAC). Furthermore, In addition, sex shows a small significant difference between the measurements studied.Thus the results of the PCA and hierarchical classification show that there are four groups that share the same morphological characteristics except for some differences that may be due to climatic and environmental adaptation. This analysis made it possible to establish remarkable phenotypical differences, which have implications to take into account in the program of characterization and conservation of the species.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80414961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the use of 19 quantitative variables, we carried out a discriminant analysis on 119 goats and 32 bucks divided into 4 Wilayas (Tlemcen, Adrar, Naama and Bechar). The discriminant analysis on males was not significant. As for the female population, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) on the region effect was highly significant p=1.32 x 10-11. A clear separation has been found between the populations, with the exception of Naama and Tlemcen, which are overlapped. Measurements belonging to chest width ( LP),chest circumference ( TP), chest depth ( PP), rump width (LB), ischium width (LI), withers height( HG), ear length LO) and hair length (LPI).are the best variables that separate between regions in the female population, with a very high significance level (p<0.01). This study aims to seek a genetic polymorphism between the different dentate lavender populations collected in the Algerian littoral. Populations of Lavandula dentata were sampled in different ecoregions. The genotypic difference between the six populations was measured by the RAPD-PCR method using 8 RAPD primers and molecular phylogeny was performed by cluster analysis. The RAPD electrophoretic diagrams of the 6 populations of Lavandula dentata showed a rate of 50.49% of polymorphic bands. The dendrogram obtained via cluster analysis allowed us to group the populations into 2 clusters with a similarity index> 68% which showed that they are genetically close despite their geographical distance.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75842548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reproduction data were collected on 238 goats. The Red Maradi first reached age at conception and first kidding, followed by F1, Saanen and F2 (P<0.05). On the other hand, the average weight at mating was significantly higher in Saanen, followed by F1, F2 and Red Maradi. Goats born in the rainy season had better reproductive performance than the others born in the dry season. Similarly, single-born goats had the shortest period (P<0.05) for some reproductive performances (age at conception, age at first kidding, kidding interval and gestation period). The Red Maradi breed was superior in all reproductive traits indicating better reproductive performance of this breed compared to Saanen and F1 and F2. The effect of the season on most traits indicates the need for supplementation of goats during the dry season when the pasture condition is very poor for better reproductive performance.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73468024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty microsatellite loci,BM1818, BM1824, BM2113, CSRM60, CSSM66, ETH3, ETH10, ETH152, ETH185, ETH225, HAUT24, HAUT27, HEL1, HEL5, HEL9, HEL13, ILSTS005, ILSTS006, INRA005 and INRA023, were used to screen a random sample of 32 of Brahman cattle at the Brahman nucleus herd at DVS Livestock Center in Kuala Berang, Terengganu. A total of 151 alleles were detected. The number of alleles per locus varied between 6 and 10 with an average of 7.6. The effective number of alleles (Ne) range between 2 and 7 with average of 3.8. The observed heterozygosity values (0.26 - 0.83) were lower than the expected heterozygosity values for almost all loci. The overall mean heterozygosity was 0.54. The values of inbreeding coefficient (FIS) based on the individual locus were generally positive. Thirteen loci deviated from HWE equilibrium (p<0.05). This review focuses on a synthesis of knowledge on the Borgou cattle breed farming in Benin. It gathers information about its origin, its physical and ethnological characteristics. It also highlights the characterization of rearing modes, its adaptation to different farming systems, the analysis of its productivity and its genetic improvement. Studies of several authors, reports of various structures that intervene in livestock farming system in Benin have been involved in this review. It should be noted that the Borgou cattle breed is a trypanotolerant taurine breed from northern Benin. The breed has shown by its traits a remarkable adaptation to its natural environment and has the advantage of enhancing natural rangelands and especially wetlands infested with tsetse flies and hostile to zebu cattle farming. If particular attention is paid to livestock farming in rural areas, this breed has the potential to improve and increase production from cattle farming in Benin. Likewise, uncontrolled crossbreeding of this breed with other native breeds or even exotic breeds presents risks of genetic loss to the detriment of crossbreds becoming more and more vulnerable to environmental conditions","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86214328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fruit quantitative and qualitative morphological parameters, fruit skin color on both sunexposedand shaded fruit sides, and chemical characteristics in both flesh and peel (titratable acidity, TSS, fructose,glucose, sucrose, total sugars, citric and malic acids) were evaluated. A high variability was found in the set of theevaluated pear cultivars. The fruit weight varied from 22.63 g to 63.72 g and firmness varied from 2.78 kg/cm2and 4.78 kg/cm2. ‘Arbi Sidi Bou Ali’ and ‘Arbi Bouficha’ presented the biggest fruits. However, ‘Radsi’ tendedto have the smallest fruits. ‘Jrani’ and ‘Arbi Chiheb’ have shown the lowest values of healthy seeds per fruit.‘Radsi’ pears were the most red-colored fruits, while ‘Jrani’ ‘Arbi Chiheb’ and ‘Arbi Bouficha’ produced greenyellowishfruits. Results showed also that pear fruit flesh had more effective sugars and organic acids comparedto peel for all cultivars. The TSS ranged from14.6° brix to 19.1°Brix in the flesh and from 12 to 17.1°Brix in thepeel. ‘Arbi Chiheb’ was distinguished by the highest malic acid content in both flesh and peel. Titratable aciditywas significantly higher in ‘Arbi Sidi Bou Ali’, ‘Tourki’ and ‘Meski Arteb’ compared to other cultivars. A highcorrelation was found among some pear quality attributes, which could reduce the number of pomological traits.These results would be a guide in the selection of potential cultivars which are used in food industry and freshmarket as well as in breeding programs.","PeriodicalId":12670,"journal":{"name":"GABJ","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81254585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
