I am perceiving myself as a conscious being inside of a fleshy vessel and I explore the sentiments of that experience. I am building a relationship between myself and my perception of self. Striving to evoke malaise as a means to unearth buried emotions. I am investigating the transmutation of the internal self as it is expressed through the external self. Abstracted forms intended to reimagine the body’s physical reality are conceived under the pretense of stripping back the self. Internal dialogues are articulated and their narratives are emphasized through repetitive lines and fluid forms. As the rhythm accumulates, visual phrases are conceived in which the lines answer one another only to divulge into new conversations as they sprawl across the page. Combining my formal training in media design, language acquisition, and cross-cultural exchanges, I strive to create pieces that reflect the idiosyncrasies of the human condition. My writing often explores themes of identity, culture, and society, drawing on my lived experiences—moonlighting between different cultures and identities—to repurpose representation into a more reflective mirror whilst simultaneously rejecting its historically misty veneer. \u0000 \u0000To achieve this, I use a variety of literary devices and techniques, such as experimental punctuation and sensory nomenclature, to imbue my work with emotional depth and nuance. I'm particularly fascinated by the intersection of the sublime and the mundane, using poetry as a means of translating the ineffable and exploring the grandeur of everyday experiences. This equipoise frequently imbues my overarching lyrical conceit with intimate conviction.\u0000 \u0000My artistic output is deeply personal, often starting with imagining a persona and scene, visualizing what they may encounter or never come to know, and refining my imagery and resolution into decisive moments of execution. When polishing an idea, I delight in the sonic and structural cues of verse, availing myself of alliteration and experimental punctuation to evoke specific emotions that require the full scope of my language to anatomize its message. I spend countless hours on the organization of color schemes, typography, and graphics for more visually endowed pieces to complement the magnitude, mood, and motifs being conveyed.\u0000 \u0000Looking to the future, I hope to further explore the richness and aesthetics of human nature through my background in Asian Studies, Romanticism, and children’s literature/media while connecting with others and fostering a deeper appreciation for the intersectionality and complexity of the world around us.\u0000 \u0000By using poetry as a means of translation, I contend to create artwork that inspires the senses, confronts systemic ways of thinking, and fosters an empathetic mien for those who truly need it; and, above all, I aim to provide a representation of the working world that is worthy of one’s fullest attention and my highest efforts.
Biomimicry— design inspired by the functional genius of nature— is a concept becoming more and more prevalent in fields of material science, architecture, and other sciences. Yet, the construction industry does not understand how to build with biomimetic materials, nor understand their biological precedents. Much of this has to do with the familiar use of traditional, high-carbon materials, and lack of collaboration between contractors and biologists. Thus, this study offers a comprehensive exploration of how well biomimetics is translated into the material and structural qualities of buildings. Furthermore, this study aims to provide insight on how to fill the gap between novel technologies and commercial building development. As a result of this effort, architects and engineers will understand how to leverage nature to make buildings more sustainable. In the first part of this document, biomimicry is contextualized and the scope of this investigation is explained. The second part transitions into a detailed exploration of biological models, processes, and their material feasibility in today’s industry. Lastly, this study evaluates evidence from part two to compare how well biomimetic precedents are optimized based on available research. Evidence suggests that a paradigm shift towards system thinking is paramount to the integration of nature’s genius into a sustainable built environment.\u0000Lay Summary\u0000Copying nature's patterns, forms, and processes in new building technology is one way to achieve more efficient material and energy use. However, there are two key obstacles to sustainable building: lack of collaboration between industries, and short-term gain. This investigation explores how we can overcome these obstacles to bring more innovative solutions into the built environment. Key ideas about the green building are discussed, then existing research is explained. In the end, evidence is evaluated to demonstrate the potential for developing natural models in the real world.\u0000To see the complete thesis, please visit https://scholar.colorado.edu/concern/undergraduate_honors_theses/nk322f51x.

Over many millions of years, steady chemical cycles were formed and driven by thermodynamics and organic precursors left over from the planet’s formation. In aqueous environments, this chemistry may have led to the formation of catalytic RNA species capable of information storage and replication. Presumably, the formation of these oligonucleotides was catalyzed by primordial Earth’s abundant mineral content. However, the species that accelerated these types of transformations are unknown. In this study, the role of Zr+4 in the catalytic formation of phosphate ester bonds was explored. Through TLC screening, it was found that most of the test conditions produced no observable phosphorylated products. In the final samples, there were highly polar spots which may have contained phosphate-bearing compounds. These findings provide mixed certainty about zirconium’s catalytic capacity for ester formation but suggest that zirconium metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and alternative metal ions may be viable routes for future investigation.\u0000Lay Summary\u0000Earth began as a planet of rock and magma, hardly recognizable without the biological adornments that characterize it today. For nearly a billion years, consistent comet and asteroid impacts heated the planet and vaporized any reservoirs of water or organic matter that covered the surface. As this bombardment subsided, life came to fruition in half the time that the mineral rain had lasted. The question of how this transition occurred is one of the most elusive in the biochemical field. In particular, it is still unknown how all life, whether primordial or modern, came to share polynucleotides as an essential coding system for all their requisite biological functions.\u0000This study explored the role of Zr+4, an abundant mineral on early Earth, in the catalytic formation of phosphate ester bonds, the core linkages in DNA and RNA. Through TLC screening, it was found that most of the test conditions produced no observable phosphorylated products. In the final samples, highly polar spots may have contained phosphate-bearing compounds. These findings provide mixed certainty about zirconium’s capacity for ester formation but suggest that zirconium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and alternative metal ions that reflect early Earth’s composition may be viable routes for future investigation into this grand mystery.\u0000To see the complete thesis, please visit https://scholar.colorado.edu/concern/undergraduate_honors_theses/cf95jc857.

I narrow this question down into a sub-question that I can investigate: what is the effect of voter turnout on income inequality? I narrow my regional focus to Latin America and add a temporal focus to the years from 2000 to present. I theorize that higher voter turnout leads to decreased income inequality. This is because, as theorized by Lijphart (1996), low voter turnout is by and large a result of the people in low economic groups’ failure to turnout to vote. Therefore, the alternate hypothesis of this thesis is that high voter turnout leads to more equal income distribution in Latin America from 2000 to present. I discover that I cannot reject my null hypothesis. There is not sufficient statistically significant evidence to believe that, based on a multivariate ordinary least squares regression analysis, increased voter turnout leads to increased income equality. This paper has implications for future researchers studying the effects of voter turnout in Latin America and for researchers interested in answering macroeconomic questions about this region.\u0000To see the complete thesis, please visit https://scholar.colorado.edu/concern/undergraduate_honors_theses/m900nv68b.
