The subjects were 138 children (75 of boys and 63 of girls) who carried out fluoride mouthrinsing with solution of 100 ppmF- for 6 years and 105 children (65 of boys and 40 of girls) who had no fluoride mouthrinsing were analysed by cohort study from 1983 to 1989. The cariostatic effect was evaluated by DMFT index and DMF rate for each tooth type in each erupted school grade. The increment of DMFT index was less than that of the control group. There was a clear cariostatic effect with the advance in the school grade. DMF rate for each tooth type of 1 in 2nd grade and 2 in 3rd grade students showed a statistically significant difference. Both that of upper and lower first molars in 1st and 2nd grade also showed the same result as that of upper incisors. In conclusion, a high cariostatic effect was obtained by introducing the use of fluoride mouthrinsing with a solution of 100ppmF- to the school dental health program, and the observation of DMF rate for each tooth type classified with each erupted school grade was a useful method to evaluate the cariostatic effect of fluoride mouthrinsing.</p>","PeriodicalId":12643,"journal":{"name":"Gifu Shika Gakkai zasshi = The Journal of Gifu Dental Society","volume":"16 2","pages":"603-17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13634355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Osteoclasts showed rapid extension and retraction of pseudopodia with intense ruffling activity and active translocation over a glass surface when there was enough open space around them, while fibroblast-like cells seemed much more stationary. Osteoclasts were not able to cross over cell bodies of fibroblast-like cells which interfered with migration of the osteoclasts. As fibroblast-like cells proliferated, they gradually took over the open glass surface and finally tightly surrounded the osteoclasts. Such osteoclasts usually became contracted and pseudopodial and migratory activities decreased. Fluorescent microscopy of well-spread osteoclaststs stained with rhodamine-labeled phalloidin revealed development of a band-like structure composed of a number of brightly fluorescent F-actin dots at the cell periphery and fine F-actin bundles which run through the cell bodies. On the other hand, contracted osteoclasts tightly surrounded by fibroblast-like cells showed conglomerates composed of accumulated F-actin dots instead of the band-like structure. An F-actin pattern of fibroblast-like cells, which was very different from that of osteoclasts, displayed thick and straight bright bundles with in the cell bodies. The present observation suggests that ongoing osteoclastic bone resorption may be regulated by fibroblast-like cells through limitation of osteoclastic motile activity, and alteration of cytoskeleton and cell-substratum interaction which occurred in osteoclasts may be involved in the mechanism.</p>","PeriodicalId":12643,"journal":{"name":"Gifu Shika Gakkai zasshi = The Journal of Gifu Dental Society","volume":"16 2","pages":"427-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13636711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bacterial fatty acid composition was effective for differentiation of Streptococcus mutans from the other oral streptococci. The composition obtained from the reference strains and the clinical isolates involved five groups and was useful as a rapid screening index for Streptococcus mutans. Compositional changes in membrane lipids played important roles in synthesis and secretion of extracellular glucosyltransferase for Streptococcus mutans. A characteristic property of Streptococcus mutans, resistance to 40% sucrose in the medium, is ascribable to compositional changes in membrane lipids, especially the glycolipids, of Streptococcus mutans.</p>","PeriodicalId":12643,"journal":{"name":"Gifu Shika Gakkai zasshi = The Journal of Gifu Dental Society","volume":"16 1","pages":"16-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13779026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty young hybrid adult dogs, which were divided into five groups: a control group, a group of subjects just after rapid contraction, and retention groups at two, four and eight weeks. For the experimental groups, an expansion screw (No. 602-813), made by Dentaurum Co., was fixed between the maxillary canines and left there for two weeks to achieve a contraction with a total reduction of 3.52 mm. Measuring models, decalcified preparations (H.E. stain, Azan stain) and non-decalcified preparations (with hard tissue labeling medication) were used for the method of the study. The application of interrupted rapid contraction force at the maxilla produced a little body fusion on the mid-palatal suture only. However, the extent was very small, and disappeared during the retention. The fixed teeth showed tipping movements, but although there was a reduction of the maxillary width, it was still considered an indication and left a recognizable permanent complication. Thus the procedure is considered to be clinically valuable.</p>","PeriodicalId":12643,"journal":{"name":"Gifu Shika Gakkai zasshi = The Journal of Gifu Dental Society","volume":"16 1","pages":"80-102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13841713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
