Nonaxisymmetric halo loads require larger analysis models. In this paper, the results of transient EM analyses of halo strikes during a vertical displacement event are presented. The plasma motions and halo characteristics are prescribed based on analyses performed by the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Republic. The time transient EM solution provides loads to a full three-dimensional transient dynamic analysis of the vacuum vessel. The responses to large lateral halo loads are altered and mitigated by the mode responses of the vessel. Clark","doi":"10.1080/15361055.2023.2210705","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/15361055.2023.2210705","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract In inertial confinement fusion target design, the shape discrepancy between the cylindrical hohlraum and the spherical capsule creates a low mode asymmetry in the implosion. One way to correct such asymmetry is to shim the target capsule surface with extra mass in specific locations following a three-dimensional P4 Legendre mode. Previously, the desired surface pattern was precision machined out of the capsule. The resulting 2DConA experiments that investigated the implosion’s shape demonstrated the shimming method’s success. However, machining leaves large defects on the capsule surface that will degrade neutron yield in a DT implosion. An alternative shimming approach is to grow the pattern on the capsule surface using a glow discharge polymerization coating process in a stencil lithography application. A thorium subcritical reactor activated and controlled by muon-catalyzed fusion (MuCF) is an alternative until the completion of the pure fusion reactors. This proposal consists of two main technologies: a steady-state MuCF and the thorium subcritical fission reactor with cascaded neutron multipliers.
