Key findings include: first, moving toward a more upstream position in production and raising economic complexity are associated with the country increasing its share of GVC value added. Second, fostering GVC participation and expanding the share of the domestic value added in a value chain require efforts to reduce trade barriers, enhance infrastructure, foster human capital formation, support research and development, and improve institutions.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90162713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chosen specification also controls for the effect of the exchange rate. The results can be summarised as follows. Mean spillovers running from news to commodity returns are positive with the exception of Gold and Silver. Volatility spillovers are bigger in size and affect most commodity returns. Both first and second moment linkages are stronger in the post-September 2008 period. Overall, our findings confirm that commodities, despite not being financial assets, are sensitive to macro news (especially their volatility), and also suggest that the global financial crisis has strengthened such linkages.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87672651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

World Bank client countries have faced difficulty finding the issues that hinder them from improving logistics competence. Therefore, it is beneficial to understand how the logistics service industry is regulated and what should be addressed in building the regulatory framework to improve logistics competence. This note proposes questions to be addressed for beneficial regulations by reviewing existing logistics service regulations in 14 countries, particularly regulations for the freight forwarding industry. These questions will help in assessing a regulatory framework and identifying regulatory weaknesses. This note suggests that the regulatory framework should take into consideration national recognition of freight forwarding business, an institutional arrangement with clear division of responsibility among stakeholders, and streamlined but flexible regulations adapted to the country context.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90690957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In every period, either zero demand or a positive demand is observed with an unknown probability. The distribution of the positive demand is assumed to be from the location-scale family with unknown mean and variance. The functional form of the optimal inventory target is available but it is a function of the unknown intermittent demand parameters that must be estimated from a limited amount of historical demand data. We first quantify the expected cost associated with implementing the optimal inventory policy using the point estimates of the unknown parameters by ignoring the uncertainty around them. We then minimize this expected cost with respect to a threshold variable that factors the statistical estimation errors of the unknown parameters into the inventory decision. We find that the use of an optimized threshold leads to a significant reduction in the a priori expected cost of the decision maker.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84380217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Green market expands and green purchasing is regarded as a contribution to sustainable development. This paper examines impacts of implementing environmental management systems on enterprises' competitiveness in international supply chains at the example of Estonian ship-building enterprises. The theoretical concept of supplier selection process is used. The alignment problems of green procurement requirements and conditions are considered. The paper focuses on the relationships in the chain affecting the procurement and selection processes. Several studies on the Ghanaian economy, have concluded that inflation in Ghana is purely a monetary phenomenon though in reality, the causes of inflation are numerous and vary. The main objective of this paper was to identify the key determinants of inflation in Ghana using the most recent monthly data from January 2000 to December 2014 (data period of 180 months). The study tested whether or not Crude Oil Price at the World Market, Exchange Rate, and Electioneering Spillover Quaternary Effects (ESQE) statistically affect inflation in Ghana either individually or jointly. The study found that crude oil price at the world market, exchange rate, and ESQE are key determinants of inflation in Ghana. The findings indicate a positive relationship between Crude Oil Price at the world market and Inflation,Cedi-Dollar Exchange Rate and Inflation as well as ESQE and Inflation (in the case ESQE, the study considered the first quarter of each post-election year within the data period). Each of thedeterminants: Crude Oil Price, Exchange Rate and ESQE was statistically significant at 1%. The study also indicated a high R-squared of more than 95% for the joint impact of all three determinants on inflation. This means that jointly, Crude Oil Price, Exchange Rate, and ESQE explain more than 95% of the variation in inflation in Ghana. The paper recommends further study into this subject matter by considering many other potential determinants of inflation in Ghana and the developing world as a whole.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73079833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although international commodity prices have been buoyant, Africa’s supply response seems to be weak. A variety of constraints may exist. Using the case of Tanzania, the paper examines the impact of market connectivity, domestic and international, on farmers’ crop choices. It is shown that the international market connectivity, measured by transport costs to the maritime port, is important for farmers to choose export crops, such as cotton and tobacco. Internal connectivity to the domestic market is also found to be important for growing food crops, such as maize and rice. Among other inputs, access to irrigation and improved seed availability are also important factors in the crop choices of farmers. The size of land area is one constraint to promote the crop shift. The paper also reports the finding that farmers are not using market prices effectively in their choice of crop, even after the endogeneity of local prices is taken into account.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80012686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Now, firms are starting to look ahead in the chain. It is sound knowledge of customer needs that will control production and supply of goods. This overall perspective of both the customer need and the flow of goods are fundamental for achieving competitive advantages. The failure of supply chain and marketing integration is significant barriers to identifying and responding to customer demand, optimizing inventories and production runs, exploiting sales and product development opportunities, and servicing the customer base. It also leads to either excessive inventories or out-of-stock situations. Poor collaboration leads to this situation internally, as well as up and down the external supply and marketing channels. The goal of Convergence of Supply Chain and Marketing (CSM) is to create unique competitive advantages by linking together customer values with a more effective flow of products and goods. The flow must always be refined and create customer value proposition in a constantly changing market. By encouraging supply chain and marketing people meet in new interesting scenario, firms can develop unique competitive advantages. It is all about achieving CSM. Paper also highlights role of CSM in resolving conflict between supply chain and marketing, and suggests effective strategy for its implementation.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"89 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86740616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates how changing consumption and investment patterns affected the aforementioned increase. A series of Structural Decomposition Analyses at a global level as well as for 38 major economies is conducted. The analyses disentangle the drivers of Raw Material Consumption, which measures the extraction of materials necessary to produce a country's final demand. Data is taken from the World Input-Output Database. The results suggest that rising final demand is the predominant driver of growing Raw Material Consumption. Furthermore, final demand shifted into countries that consume material intensive goods. This shift was particularly pronounced for construction minerals and investment, indicating that infrastructure investment in industrialising nations was a key driver. The mix of goods in final demand slightly dematerialised. Falling material intensities in extractive industries as well as changes in production and trade patterns decelerated the growth of Raw Material Consumption. The country-level Structural Decomposition Analyses obtained qualitatively similar results.","PeriodicalId":12584,"journal":{"name":"Global Commodity Issues eJournal","volume":"232 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76289086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
