The Hertzian contact between the spheres causes the nonlinearity of the system to increase, which transforms high amplitude narrowband sinusoidal input into a train of wideband impulses. Generation of short duration ultrasonic pulses is desirable both in diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound. Nevertheless, the biggest challenge in terms of adaptation to biomedical ultrasound is the coupling of the ultrasonic energy into biological tissue. An analytical model was created to address the coupling issue. Effect of the matching layer was modelled as a flexible thin plate clamped from the edges. Model was verified against hydrophone measurements. Different coupling materials, such as glass, aluminium, acrylic, silicon rubber, and vitreous carbon, was analysed with this model. Results showed that soft matching layers such as acrylic and rubber inhibit the generation of higher order harmonics. Between the hard matching materials, vitreous carbon achieved the best results due to its acoustic impedance.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126753488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This becomes even more challenging when the needle is inserted at higher angles with respect to the ultrasound probe. For very large insertion angles, the needle becomes virtually invisible in the ultrasound data and medical specialists need to find the needle indirectly either from out-of-plane or in-plane views. In this paper, we propose a novel method to automatically detect steep needles in 3D ultrasound data and visualize its 2D in-plane view to the medical specialist. Our method exploits indirect information regarding the presence of a needle in the volume by examining the shadow traces of structures. The proposed algorithm successfully detects the needle plane with high accuracy for all the ten measured datasets. Furthermore, the full-length needle and its tip are always visible in the extracted scan planes. The proposed method is efficient and robust to noise and artifacts, thereby strongly supporting the clinical intervention and eliminating the need for external tracking devices.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130491929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The acoustic emission is thus forced through a hole smaller than the diameter of the transducer's surface. In particular, a cylinder with an upper diameter of 10mm and a height of 5mm ensures the beam pattern of the final emitter is broad across a wide frequency range. Sound attenuation is reduced and lobes in the transducer's beam pattern are cancelled. Beam broadening can improve range estimation techniques and ultrasonic sonar as a wider area can be inspected with one emission with no need for scanning.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133471832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although increased perfusion may be found in areas of active angiogenesis due to increased demands for blood supply, decreased perfusion may be caused by the decreased efficiency and functionality, typical of cancer angiogenic microvasculature. Contrast dispersion, mainly determined by the flow profile in large vessels and by the multipath trajectories in the microvasculature, may thus represent a suitable alternative to characterize cancer angiogenesis. Based on a model of the contrast transport kinetics as a convective-dispersion process, several DCE-US methods have been proposed estimating dispersion for characterization of cancer angiogenic vasculature. Although dispersion imaging has shown promising in a clinical context, its physical link with variations in flow and vascular architecture has never been shown. The objective of this work is thus to investigate the influence of flow and underlying vascular architecture on the estimation of dispersion in an ex-vivo machine-perfused pig liver.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124518099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have shown this technique to be useful in children on dialysis. B-line detection in lung ultrasound in children is novel and challenging. This paper presents a novel automatic B-line detection via an inverse problem involving the Radon transform, which is solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The proposed method restores the lines in the speckle images. Then, the B-lines are automatically detected using a simple local maxima technique in the Radon transform domain, associated with some definitions of the line artefacts. The results show that our proposed method outperforms existing methods by up to 69 %.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133993421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these instruments are limited to the length of an endoscope and the only clinically available, autonomous devices able to travel the full length of the GI tract easily offer only video capsule endoscopy (VCE). Our work seeks to overcome this limitation with a device (“Sonopill”) for multimodal capsule endoscopy, providing optical and microultrasound (μUS) imaging and supporting sensors1.μUS transducers have been developed with multiple piezoelectric materials operating across a range of centre frequencies to study viability in the GI tract. Because of the combined constraints of μUS imaging and the low power / heat tolerance of autonomous devices, a hybrid approach has been taken to the transducer design, with separate transmit and receive arrays allowing multiple manufacturing approaches to maximise system efficiency. To explore these approaches fully, prototype devices have been developed with PVDF, high-frequency PZT and PMN-PT composites, and piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer arrays. Test capsules have been developed using 3D printing to investigate issues including power consumption, heat generation / dissipation, acoustic coupling, signal strength and capsule integrity. Because of the high functional density of the electronics in our proposed system, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) have been developed to realise the ultrasound transmit and receive circuitry along with white-light and autofluorescence imaging with singlephoton avalanche detectors (SPADs). The ultrasound ASIC has been developed and the SPAD electronics and optical subsystem have been validated experimentally. This paper presents recent outcomes of work aimed at removing the bottleneck due to data acquisition rates, to fully exploit the scanning speed of modern 6-DoF manipulators. State of the art ultrasonic instrumentation has been integrated into a large robot cell to enable fast data acquisition, high scan resolutions and accurate positional encoding. A fibre optic connection between the ultrasonic instrument and the server computer enables data transfer rates up to 1.6GB/s. Multiple data collection methods are compared. Performance of the integrated system allows traditional ultrasonic phased array scanning as well as full matrix capture (FMC). In FMC configuration, linear scan speeds up to 156mm/s with 64 pulses per frame are achieved - this speed is only constrained by the acoustic wave propagation in the component. An 8x increase of the speed (up to 1.25m/s) can be achieved using multiple transmission elements, reaching the physical limits for acceptable acoustic alignment of transmission and reception paths. Scan results, relative to a 1.2m × 3m carbon fibre sample, are presented.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125802752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PbTiO3 (PT)/ Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) sol-gel composite ultrasonic transducers have high temperature durability and high sensitivity from room temperature (RT) to 300 °C. However, poling of PT/PZT is difficult because of high coercive field of PT and high temperature poling process is required. In recent experiments, PT/BaTiO3 (BT) was successfully poled at RT and it showed reasonable signal strength at RT, though high temperature durability test was not performed yet. In this study, thin and thick PT/BT sol-gel composite films were fabricated onto titanium substrates and high temperature durability test was carried out from for these samples. As a result, thin PT/BT film showed clear multiple reflected echoes from the bottom surface of titanium substrate with reasonable signal amplitude and signal to noise ratio (SNR) from RT to 300 °C. The degradation of signal amplitude was not observed from RT to 300 °C. Rather, the signal amplitude was increased along with rising of hot plate temperature. Thick PT/BT film poled by high temperature corona poling showed lowest signal amplitude among PT/BT films and the degradation of signal amplitude was observed from RT to 300 °C. However, thick PT/BT film poled by pulse poling at RT showed highest signal amplitude among PT/BT films from RT to 300 °C.","PeriodicalId":124339,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125347246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
