Three-dimensional printers are capable of easily producing output from complicated models designed in a computer. In addition, bio technologies are applying for fabrication [Yao et al. 2015]. How can 3D printers be made to output computationally-designed models of 3D sheets? Typically, the production of objects made of silk threads requires several steps (Figure 2): (1) silkworms form cocoons, (2) cocoons are made into threads, and (3) threads are transformed into clothes or other products. In the past, silkworms have been considered primarily as organisms that create silk threads, rather than as being capable of providing a method of silk production. Silk Pavillion [Oxman et al. 2014] was the first example where silkworms were regarded as providing a viable production method. However, this study only focused on making large but simple structures. In this study, we propose a new method to construct arbitrary three-dimensional silk sheets using silkworms (Figure 1). Our method can be applied to small objects printed with 3D printers. First, we print a 3D model in several parts to prevent silkworms from forming cocoons. When designing the model, we ensure that the silkworms have sufficient space to create silk sheets. Second, we print the portions of the model with a 3D printer. Third, we place silkworms on these portions, allowing them to spit silk threads. Finally, we peel off the produced sheets and connect them. This approach depends on the fact that when silkworms are placed on the surface of a three-dimensional object, they create silk sheets matched to the shape of the surface.","PeriodicalId":124162,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Posters","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133430616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current lighting design systems support only direct lighting paradigm which requires fine-tuning each light's parameters to achieve a global lighting effect. In this study, we developed an integrated lighting design system which comprises direct, indirect, and inverse lighting design paradigms in VR environment. The system provides designers with an immersive, intuitive, and effective way of lighting design.","PeriodicalId":124162,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Posters","volume":"336 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116126438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To properly display AR contents on a screen, color cameras are widely used to detect markers, feature points, and registered images [Krevelen 2007], and the corresponding 2D/3D visual contents are rendered with proper size and location on the screen/displaying device. However, when the lighting condition is unstable, the flicking effects of the rendered visual contents could degrade the user experience. In a dark environment, it is challenging to display AR contents based on color cameras for marker/feature point detection. Even RGB-D cameras [A. Canessa and Solari 2014] are used for object detection to display the AR contents, the object without salient representation in the depth map are still challenging to be detected. In addition, the motion blur situation also makes the AR content displaying challenging. To solve the above-mentioned issues, in this paper, we propose an orientation-based AR display scheme using the orientation sensors, i.e. gyro sensor, accelerometer, and magnetometer (compass sensor) of a smart glass, according to the user tracking results from a depth camera to properly display the AR contents on a smart glass. In the experimental results, the proposed prototype can properly display AR contents in bright environment and in extremely dark environment.","PeriodicalId":124162,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Posters","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115272258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a mirror metaphor that simulates a physical stereoscopic screen with the properties of a mirror. In addition to allowing users to interact with virtual objects positioned in front of a stereoscopic screen using virtual hands, the virtual hands can be transferred inside a virtual mirror and interact with objects behind the screen. When the virtual hands are operating inside the virtual mirror, they are displayed like the reflection in a real mirror. We present application scenarios that would make use of the expanded interactable space in a desktop VR environment created by the proposed mirror metaphor.","PeriodicalId":124162,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Posters","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128637822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sometimes when traveling in a large-scale virtual environment, the tracking space may not be large enough to fit the virtual environment. Several moving approaches such as virtual jumping and flying are proposed to overcome this limitation. Nevertheless, inappropriate design of moving approaches will cause serious simulator sickness. Intensive visual flow can be one of the major factors that cause the simulator sickness. According to Oculus Best Practices [Oculus 2017], it is necessary to avoid an intensive display of visual flow while developing VR application. There are several researches trying to combat simulator sickness through reducing optical flow. FOV restrictor [Fernandes and Feiner 2016] is one of the successful ways. By decreasing the FOV of the HMD, it can effectively reduce optical flow from peripheral vision and make users feel more comfortable. However, the immersiveness in VR will be declined due to the limited size of FOV.","PeriodicalId":124162,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Posters","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129752193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
