The background protocol, the implementation environment, the communications architecture, the user interface, some working XTP demonstration programs, and some measured performance results are described. The experience with XTP shows that the implementation is stable; operational in PC and VME bus environments; and capable of being transmitted reliably over Ethernet, token ring, and fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) networks.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"410 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132034896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most time consuming operations such as switching and routing in communication networks are performed in the optical domain in the proposed system. The design does not suffer from the optical/electrical conversion bottlenecks and can perform switching and routing in the range of gigabits/s. The source-destination (S-D) information from a message is first converted to the spatial domain. The routing table stores all S-D codes and the corresponding control codes for the switching module. Using a cylindrical system, the routing table is searched in parallel (single step) and control signals corresponding to the matched S-D row from the table are used to control the switching module. the switching module, based on the self electrooptical device array technology, can be reconfigured in the gigahertz range and provide high bandwidth.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129557434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system uses radio as a transmission medium to the lower layer and a conventional LAN to the upper one. The users of a wireless network enjoy complete freedom from frequent reconfiguration of existing terminal arrangements. However, office buildings present a harsh environment for radio transmission because of numerous reflections from walls, furniture, and even people. A dynamic channel assignment scheme with no host computers is also described. The system performance is analyzed through computer simulations. The results show that 100 remote terminals are accommodated to 25 base stations safely on the conditions that the upper layer is a 10-Mb/s carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) network and the lower is a 32-kb/s CSMA packet ratio network.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130320996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method creates an operational network out of the individual bus links, removes failed sections from the network by reconfiguration, and supports node insertion and removal. It is designed to work in both dual and folded bus systems. The configuration control is based on simple physical layer signaling, achieving maximum possible connectivity for both open (linear) and looped (ring) topologies. It uses only generally available medium-access control (MAC) functions and is therefore applicable to any slotted-bus MAC protocol. It is shown that in the context of this configuration control algorithm, any network can be reduced to an equivalent five-node configuration. The algorithm can recover from all possible single failures in this five-node configuration, i.e. in an arbitrary network. The algorithm also handles node removal and insertion, and functions to support network management are provided.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125331646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been designed to bring together the most interesting features of distributed-control MAC protocols and centralized token-passing MAC protocols. From the fully distributed MAC protocols, DCP acquires the capability to guarantee both a complete utilization of the medium capacity and an access delay of only a few slots at light loads. From the centralized token-passing MAC protocols, DCP inherits a more predictable and fair behavior at heavy loads. The basic ideas of the proposal are: a cycle for acquiring transmission rights and a balancing function between reservations and empty slots. The analysis shows that DCP inherits a more predictable and fair behavior at heavy loads. The analysis shows that, at heavy loads, DCP approaches a polling system with G-limited service and zero reply interval. At light loads DCP behavior is close to that of the distributed queue dual bus protocol.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130346205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sevcik and M.J. Johnson (1987) will simplify the protocol and improve the performance of synchronous traffic by reducing its mean latency. The first change requires that an asynchronous frame must be able to be sent in its entirety in the time remaining before the token rotation timer expires. The second change causes the token rotation timer to be reset to zero on every arrival, including late ones, thereby discarding token lateness instead of accumulating it.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121653349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interconnected networks consist of token ring, fiber distributed data interface (FDDI), and carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) networks, each of which connects a large population of users. In the interconnected networks, the local users on the token ring send intra- or internetwork packets. The internetwork packets are transmitted to the CSMA/CD network via gateways and the FDDI network. In the meantime, the local users on the FDDI and CSMA/CD networks generate intranetwork packets. Since the maximum packet sizes of these networks are different, packet fragmentation and reassembly are sometimes necessary. These functions are performed by gateways. The model focuses on the end-to-end delay between two end users on the token ring and CSMA/CD network. Analytic models for calculating the delays for the FDDI network and the interconnected networks are presented, and the measurements from the models are compared with that from the simulation models, validating the analytic models.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132015185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new bridge protocol for route determination in a multiple-ring network is introduced. Its main advantage is its communication efficiency: the number of frames used is the number of rings plus the number of bridges in the network, as opposed to the exponential function needed by the existing protocol. Some extensions of the protocol are given. The correctness proof for the new protocol is presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":122950,"journal":{"name":"[1990] Proceedings. 15th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131186241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
